Variety Trials of Warm-Season Perennial Grasses, Grain Sorghum,
Alfalfa, and Various Warm-Season Legumes.
L. S. Dunavin, H. A. Peacock, D. W. Gorbett
Warm-Season Perennial Grasses:
This trial included an experimental bermudagrass which was set in the late
summer of 1986 and a second treatment of the grass which was set on March 25,
1987. Tifton 78, Tifton 44, and Florona were set in the late summer of 1986.
Tifton 9 bahiagrass was included in the trial and was planted on May 17, 1988.
The trial was located on a Red Bay sandy loam soil (Rhodic Paleudult). An
application of 300 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer was made on March 13,
1989 and again on September 7, 1989. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds
per acre on June 7, July 12, and August 10 and at 100 pounds per acre on Septem-
ber 7. Conversion factors are given in Table 1 for the use of those who would
like to convert to metric units. Climatological data are presented in Table 2.
The grasseswere harvested five times and data are presented in Table 3. These
data indicate the apparent superiority, from a yield standpoint, of the experimen-
tal bermudagrass.
Alfalfa:
Twelve alfalfa varieties were included in the 1989 trial. These were planted
on October 28, 1987 on an Orangeburg loamy sand- soil (Typic Paleudult). An
application of 400 pounds per acre of 0-30-15 fertilizer and 6 pounds per acre of
boron was made on September 23, 1988. Applications of 200 pounds per acre of 60%
muriate of potash were made on April 25, June 19, and August 25, 1989. Harvests
were made on April 17, May 16, June 13, July 19, and August 22, 1989. A sixth
harvest was expected; however, a sudden infestation by velvetbean caterpillar
over the weekend of September 16-17, 1989 completely stripped the foliage. Data
are presented in Table 4.
Warm-Season Legumes:
Two entries each of alyceclover and hairy indigo and eight entries of
aeschynomene were included in a warm-season legume trial in 1989. The trial was
planted on June 20, 1989 on an Orangeburg sandy loam soil (Typic Paleudult). An
application of 350 pounds per acre of 0-30-15 fertilizer was disked into the soil
on June 19, 1989. Two harvests were made. Regrowth from both hairy indigo entries
and from common alyceclover was poor. An early frost on October.20, 1989 (320 F)
killed all plants so the final harvest was made that day. Data are given for yield
in Table 5.
Grain Sorghum Jay:
Cultivars of 54 grain sorghums were tested in a single replicated trial in
1989 on an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult) to determine yield, heading date,
head type, lodging, disease reaction, height, and bird depredation. All cultivars
were planted April 26 at a seeding rate of 12 seed per foot of row (8 to 12 lbs
seed/A depending on seed size) in rows 3-feet apart. A preplant application of
tAssociate Professor of Agronomy,, Professor and Center Director, AREC, Jay,
respectively, and Professor, AREC, Marianna.
- I -
250 lbs/A of 8-24-24 was disked into the soil and 100 Ibs/A ammonium nitrate was
applied as a top dressing. A preemergence application of 1 lb of atrazine and 4 Ibs
of propachlor per acre controlled weedy grasses and broadleaves except some
morningglory. Soil insect control consisted of 20 Ibs/A Furadan applied in a band
6 inches under the row prior to planting. Grain was harvested August 9 and dried
to 12% moisture before weighing. Precipitation for April through August at AREC,
Jay is shown in Table 6.
Yields were good for most cultivars. The 23.96 inches of rainfall did not
appear to harm the grain sorghum but helped all cultivars make a decent yield.
From April 1 through August 9, there were 43.97 inches of rainfall (Table 6). The
41-year average for this time period at AREC, Jay is 31.13 inches. In spite of
all the excess, and at times heavy rainfall, leaf diseases (primarily anthracnose,
Colletotrichum graminicola) were unusually light. The more than adequate rainfall
combined with non-severe leaf diseases allowed the grain sorghum plants to produce
a full grain load.
Data on yield and other agronomic characteristics are presented in Table 7.
The highest yielding hybrid in the test was Delta and Pine Land Funk's G-1711 with
8910 lbs/A followed by Conlee Wrangler with 8710 lbs/A and DeKalb X-866 with 8620
lbs/A grain. Two other entries, Asgrow Topaz and Helena Hyperformer HSC Wings,
yielded more than 8000 lbs/A grain. The mean for the test was 7070 lbs/A (about
6 bushels/A more than the highest yielding entry in our hybrid corn test). Two-,
three-, four-, and five-year average yields of hybrids grown at AREC, Jay are
presented in Table 8. The highest yielding hybrid averaged over five years was
Delta and Pine Land Funk's G-1711. The highest yielding hybrid averaged over four
years, three years, and two years was also Delta and Pine Land Funk's G-1711.
Grain Sorghum Marianna:
Two plantings of commercial grain sorghum hybrids were made at AREC, Marianna in
1989. The early planting..of 64 hybrids was made April 17 and the late planting of
the same 64 hybrids was made July 26. Both plantings were irrigated. Fertilizer for
the early-planted trial included 350 lbs/A of 20-10-18 preplant incorporated and
300 lbs/A ammonium nitrate applied as a top dressing on May 23. Fertilizer for the
late-planted trial included 400 lbs/A 13-13-13 postplanting (August 4) and 300
lbs/A ammonium nitrate as a top dressing on August 21. Data on yield and other
agronomic characteristics from the early and late plantings (April and July) are
presented in Tables 9 and 10. The highest yielding hybrid from the early planting
was Asgrow Chaparral with 5763 lbs/A grain followed by Conlee Wrangler with 5726
lbs/A and George Warner W-876-DR with 5672 lbs/A grain. Average yield for the test
was 5084 lbs/A. Disease ratings were high on many entries. Northrup King Savanna 5
was least affected by anthracnose and fusarium stalk rot.
The highest yielding hybrid from the late planting was Nor.thrup King Savanna
5 with 3299 Ibs/A grain. Average yield for the test was 2077 lbs/A. Late planting
hybrids yielded poorly because of a very high incidence of anthracnose and fusarium
stalk rot and a missed critical irrigation at heading. The rainfall data for Marianna
AREC for the 1989 season are presented in Table 11.
Yields for the early planting at Marianna in 1987, 1988, 1989, and two- and
three-year average yields are presented in Table 12. The highest yielding hybrid
averaged over three years was Conlee FFR331. The highest yielding hybrid averaged
over two years was Helena Hyperformer 1330DR...
-2-
Yields for the late plantings at Marianna in 1987, 1988, 1989, and two- and
three-year average yields are presented in Table 13. The highest yielding hybrid
averaged over three years was Northrup King Savanna 5. The highest yielding hybrid
averaged over two years was Helena Hyperformer 1330DR.
The average yield of the grain hybrids grown at both Jay and Marianna are
presented in Table 14. The highest yielding hybrid from the average of the two
locations was Delta and Pine Land Funks G-1711 with 7280 Ibs/A grain. This was
followed by Conlee Wrangler with 7218 Ibs/A and George Warner W-876-DR with 6756
lbs/A grain. Other hybrids that averaged more than 6500 Ibs/A were Jacques 606E,
Helena Hyperformer 1330DR, Helena Hyperformer HSC Wings, Helena Hyperformer HSC
Cherokee, George Warner W-917-E, DeKalb X-866, Cargill 6670, and Conlee Exp 421CG.
The overall mean for the two tests was 6077 lbs/A grain.
