Summer Annual Grasses:
There were four millets and sixteen sorghum X sudangrass hybrids in the
summer annual grass trial in 1987. The trial was planted on April 6, 1987.
Millet was seeded at 10 pounds per acre and sorghum X sudangrass at 20 pounds per
acre. Rows were spaced three feet apart. Conversion factors are given in Table 1
for the use of those who would like to convert to metric units. The trial was
located on an Orangeburg sandy loam soil (Typic Paleudult). An application of 275
pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer was applied and disked into the soil on
March 13, 1987. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on May 12
and at 100 pounds per acre on June 10, July 14, and August 10. The weather was
relatively wet in 1987, and climatological data are presented in Table 2. Harvests
were made on June 9, July 10, August 10, and October 2. Data for yield, height,
disease, and maturity are presented in Tables 3, 4, and 5.
Sorghum and Corn for Silage:
Ten forage sorghums and two corns were included in the silage trial in
1987. The trial was planted on April 6, 1987. Sorghum was seeded at ten pounds
per acre and corn was planted at 40 grains per 16-foot row and later thinned to
22 plants per row. Rows were on a 3-foot spacing. An application of 275 pounds
per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer was applied and disked into the soil on March 13,
1987. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on May 12, 1987 and
again following the first harvest of each variety. The soil was an Orangeburg
sandy loam (Typic Paleudult). The first harvest began on July 13 and continued
through August 6 as varieties became ready. The second or ratoon harvest occurred
on October 6 for two varieties, and the rest were all harvested on November 12
following a low temperaturecof 310 F with some frost on the preceding night.
Data on yield, lodging, height, and disease are presented in Tables 6, 7, and 8.
Red and White Clovers:
Two red clovers and Osceola white clover were included in a trial also
containing Flame crimson clover and Bigbee bersqem clover. These were seeded on
November 3, 1986 using two sources (Florida and Oregon) of seed for the experi-
mental red clover, Cycle 5. Red clover was seeded at 10 pounds per acre, crimson
and berseem at 20 pounds, and white clover at 6 pounds. All seed were inoculated
with commercial inoculants. The soil was a Dothan fine sandy loam (Plinthic
Paleudult). An application of 300 pounds per acre of 0-30-15 fertilizer was
disked into the soil prior to planting. Following planting the soil was culti-
packed. Harvests were made on April 6, May 21, July 14, and September 30. Of
course the cool-season clovers were not expected to produce during the summer.
The red clovers did not produce in September and were apparently lost during the
relatively wet summer. Data are presented in Table 9. A portion of this data was
previously presented in Jay, AREC Research Report WF87-4, Cool-Season Forage
Trials, 1986-87.

respectively, and Professor, AREC, Marianna.

Alyceclover and Hairy Indigo:
Seven alyceclovers and three hairy indigos were included in the 1987 trial.
The trial was planted on July 13, 1987 at a seeding rate of 15 pounds per acre.
Prior to planting, an application of 300 pounds per acre of 0-30-15 fertilizer
was disked into the soil which was an Orangeburg sandy loam (Typic Paleudult).
The single harvest was made on September 30, and data are presented in Table 10.
Bermudagrass:
Five of the six entries in this trial were set in the late summer of 1986.
The "second treatment" of the experimental bermudagrass was set on March 25, 1987.
The trial was located on a Red Bay sandy loam soil (Rhodic Paleudult). Applications
of 300 pounds per acre of 8-24-24 fertilizer were made on March 25 and August 27,
1987. Ammonium nitrate was applied at 200 pounds per acre on May 28, June 26,
August 4, and August 27, 1987. Harvests were made on May 27, June 25, July 30,
August 27, and September 30. Yield data are presented in Table 11 and indicate
that the experimental bermudagrass shows considerable potential.
Grain Sorghum Jay:
Cultivars of 76 grain sorghums were tested in a single replicated trial in
1987 on a Red Bay sandy loam (Rhodic Paleudult) to determine yield, height, heading
date, lodging, and disease reaction. All cultivars were planted April 16 at a seed-
ing rate of 12 seed per foot of row [8 to 12 lbs seed/A (8.9 to 13.4 kg/ha)
depending on seed size] in rows 3-foot (0.9 m) apart. A preplant application of
500 lbs/A (560 kg/ha) of 8-24-24 was disked into the soil and 200 Ibs/A (224 kg/ha)
ammonium nitrate was applied as a top dressing. A preemergence application of
1 lb of atrazine and 4 lbs of propachlor per acre (1.12 and 4,5 kg/ha, respectively)
controlled weedy grasses on broadleaves except nutsedge and morningglory. Soil
insect control consisted of 20 Ibs/A (22.4 kg/ha) Furadan applied in a band 6
inches (15.24 cm) deep under the row before planting. Grain was harvested August
27 and dried to 12% moisture before weighing.
Yields were poor for all cultivars because of some preharvest seed sprouting
and other undertermined causes. The season was extremely wet with 39.0 inches
(99.06 cm) of rainfall from April 1 through August 27..The 39-year average for
AREC, Jay is 30.79 inches (78.21 cm) for the same time period. Leaf diseases were
evident (primarily anthracnose, Colletotrichum graminicola) but were not severe
enough for differential variety reaction. Data on yield and other agronomic
characteristics are presented in Table 12. The highest yielding hybrid in the test
was Northrup King Savanna 5 with 4130 lbs/A (4630 kg/ha) followed by Gro Agri
GSA-1180 with 3740 lbs/A (4190 kg/ha) and McCurdy 84-74 with 3670 lbs/A (4110
kg/ha). Yields were at least 2000 lbs/A (2240 kg/ha) less than usual. Two-,
three-, four-, and five-year average yields of hybrids grown at AREC, Jay are
presented in Table 13. The highest yielding hybrid averaged over five years was
McCurdy M-57YG. The highest yielding hybrid averaged over four years was McCurdy
M-57YG. The highest yielding hybrid averaged over three years was Northrup King
Savanna 5. The highest yielding hybrid averaged over two years was Conlee4Rustler.
Grain Sorghum Marianna:
Two plantings of commercial grain sorghum hybrids were made at the AREC,
Marianna in 1987. The early planting was on April 13 and the late planting on July
22. Both plantings were irrigated. Each test had 57-entries. Fertilizer for the
early-planted trial included 350 pounds per acre of 20-10-18 fertilizer plus
minors pre-plant incorporated, 300 pounds per acre of 13-13-13 fertilizer applied
on May 15 and 200 pounds per acre of ammonium nitrate on May 26. Fertilizer for
the late-planted trial included 350 pounds per acre of 13-13-13 fertilizer at

planting and 200 pounds per acre of ammonium nitrate on August 24. Yield and
other data from the April and July trials are presented in Tables 14 and 15,
respectively. Average yields for grain sorghum cultivar tests 1985, 1986, 1987
from April planting dates are presented in Table 16. The rainfall data for
Marianna for the 1987 season are presented in Table 17.
The highest yielding hybrid from the early planting was DeKalb DK49. The
highest yielding hybrid from the late planting was Jacques 707. The highest
yielding hybrid averaged over the three years was Young ORO T XTRA. The highest
yielding hybrid averaged over two years was Jacques 707.
