The Galling and Yield of Soybean Cultivars and Breeding Lines
Grown in Meloidogyne incognita- and M. arenaria-infested soils.
Robert A. Kinloch
University of Florida MAR 2
West Florida Research and Education Center
Research Report 1999-)
During 1998, 76 soybean cultivars and breeding lines were grown at two sites separately
infested with the southern root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita race 1, and the peanut
root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne arenaria race 2 at the West Florida Research and Education
Center, Santa Rosa County, FL. Soybean seed were provided by seed companies and public
breeding institutes.
Each test site was blocked according to the maturity groupings of the soybeans being
evaluated. There were 28 entries grouped in maturity groups IV-V (Table 1), 18 entries in VI
(Table 2), 17 entries in VII (Table 3), and 15 entries in VIII (Table 4). Cultivars Hutcheson and
Bryan were each included in two maturity group tests as maturity markers. Entries were
replicated X4 on three-row plots, 6.7 m long on 0.9 m centers in both tests which were planted on
7 July. Root-knot galling ratings were taken from four groups of approximately 5 plants from the
two border rows of each plot on 23 Sept. Each group was rated according to the scale of 0 = no
galling; 0.2 > 5%; 1 = 5 25%; 2 = 26 50%; 3 = 51 75%; 4 = < 75% of their root surface
galled. Yields were taken from the center rows of each plot. Maturity groups IV through VI were
harvested on 22 October and all remaining plots on 2 November.
In the tabulated data, soybean entries are listed in ascending order of their combined galling
scores to both M. incognita and M. arenaria. If it is considered that a galling score of 1.0 or less
indicates a good level of resistance, several soybeans in maturity groups IV-V would qualify as
resistant to M incognita, but only Northrup King X9857 RR appears to have a good level of
resistance to both root-knot nematodes. Similarly, Bryan would qualify in this regard in maturity
group VI. There are several entries in maturity group VII that indicate resistance to both
nematodes. These include Carver, Haskell, Northrup King S75-55, and three breeding lines from
the University of Georgia. Among entries in maturity group VIII, HyPerformer 798, Maxcy, and
a University of Florida breeding line displayed low galling responses to both nematodes.
The M. incognita test site suffered from considerable and continuous feeding by deer
Consequently, no reliance can be placed on the comparative yields reported from this site and they
cannot be accepted as typical for these soybeans grown in M incognita- infested soil. Yields in
the M arenaria-infested site were low, and in comparing yields and equivalent galling scores
there is indication that galling from M. arenaria is more destructive to yield than similar galling
levels from M. incognita.
