ITEM 49 REFUND OF HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION TRUST FUNDS

Staff has received a letter from the Department of Revenue requesting
a refund of an overpayment of homestead exemption monies paid to the
District from the 1981 tax roll. On this tax roll, the State funded
a percentage of the excess Homestead Exemptions granted homeowners.

The staff, in conjunction with Department of Revenue, has determined
the amount of the overpayment to the District was $11,000.34.

Funds advanced to the District for West Coast Regional Water Supply
Authority were $1,754.25 short of the amount due; therefore, staff
is going to forward a check in the amount of $1,754.23 to West Coast
Regional Water Supply Authority and $9,246.11 to the Department of
Revenue to close the books on this matter.

The Department of Revenue has indicated the reason for the overpayment
was due to incorrect valuations submitted by the counties and the use
of incorrect millages from DeSoto, Sumter and Pinellas Counties.
Since this was the first year of the TRIM bill, there seemed to have
been some confusion.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION: SEE EXHIBIT FOR ITEM 40

The staff recommends payment at this time.
