SOURCE DOCUMENT ADVISORY

Digital images were created from printed source
documents that, in many cases, were photocopies of
original materials held elsewhere. The quality of
these copies was often poor. Digital images reflect
the poor quality of the source documents.

Where possible images have been manipulated to
make them as readable as possible. In many cases
such manipulation was not possible. Where
available, the originals photocopied for publication
have been digitized and have been added,
separately, to this collection.

Searchable text generated from the digital images,
subsequently, is also poor. The researcher is
advised not to rely solely upon text-search in this
collection.

RIGHTS & RESTRICTIONS

Items collected here were originally published by the
Florida National Guard, many as part of its SPECIAL
ARCHIVES PUBLICATION series. Contact the Florida
National Guard for additional information.

The Florida National Guard reserves all rights to
content originating with the Guard.

DIGITIZATION

Titles from the SPECIAL ARCHIVES PUBLICATION series
were digitized by the University of Florida in
recognition of those serving in Florida's National
Guard, many of whom have given their lives in
defense of the State and the Nation.

abstracts on Floridians who served in the U.S.
Army and Navy during World War I proved
too massive an undertaking given our limited
resources. The materials have been trans-
fered to the Florida State Archives, R.A. Gray

The quality of these copies was often poor . Digital images reflect the poor quality of the source documents. Where possible images have been manipulated to make them as readable as possible . In many cases such manipulation was not possible . Where available, the originals photocopied for publication have been digitized and have been added, separately , to this collection. Searchable text generated from the digital images, subsequently, is also poor . The researcher is advised not to rely solely upon text-search in this collection. DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY AFFAIRS SPECIAL ARCHIVES PUBLICATIONS The Division of Historical Services, Depart ment of Military Affairs, has undertaken a long-term project involving the preparation and publication of both archival material from our records collection and original research results of Florida-related military topics in the form of its Special Archives Publications. The initial response from local, state and fed eral agencies and from interested individuals, state and local historical and geneaological societies to our publications project has been overwhelmingly positive. Copies of issues in the series have become one of the most pop ular and sought-after items distributed by the Florida Department of State. They have also received enthusiastic endorsement from other historical repositories nation-wide in cluding the U.S. Army Military History Insti tute and the National Guard Bureau. Listed below are those publications com pleted and distributed to date (June 1992) and those currently in preparation. At present, Departmental funding limitations allow the production of only a relatively small number of each series item. These are distrib uted through the Florida State Archives to the major state historical repositories, certain Florida-related historical collections, our De partmental library and archival files, and a selection of state and national archival, histor ical and geneaological agencies which have research interests similar to our own. It is hoped at some future date to have these publications made available to a much wider public through the sponsorship and commer cial publication efforts of the Florida Na tional Guard Historical Foundation. Finally, virtually all the original records and documents used in the production of this se ries are now located at the Florida State Ar chives, R. A. Gray Building, Tallahassee, Florida. SURGES OF INFORMATION; MILITARY AND NAVAL RECORDS Listed below are some of the many public government offices and depart ments which maintain historical records relating ,o the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. What is available is ex tremely varied and scattered. Often it is necessary to contact more than one agency for similar information before what is actually needed is located. However, most of those listed are quite willing to direct your inquiry to the proper source, especially if your request is specific enough. Just keep trying. (The list is not presented in any par ticular order, just as they are in my refer ence files! They have proved useful over the years in obtaining the most amazing range of information.
