As we all join together

that had photographs of
my daughter all over it.
Millie's so proud of that
quilt, and it's on her bed
today. My impressions of
St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital also
resemble a patchwork
quilt-a colorful jumble of
memories, experiences
and events that have
touched my life. The first

MARON
St. Maron passed to
eternal life between 407
and 423, probably around
41o. Before his death he
expressed the desire to be
buried in St. Zabina's
tomb at Kita in the region
of Cyr. But his wish was
not fulfilled. What, then,
became of the remains of
St. Maron?
Following his death
several villages erupted in
riots because each wanted
to have the remains of
Maron. Bishop Theodoret
of Cyr in his writings
suggests that Maron's
remains were buried in the
large, new church at Barad
near Kfarnabo. That
church had a sarcophagus
which may have
contained Maron's body.

Kfarhai, Batroun.

which means 'happiness
that comes again and
again.' The word 'Fitr'
refers to 'Fitrana', a
compulsary charity,
which is a fixed amount
on behalf of each member
of the family, and must be
paid at least, before the
Eid congregational
prayers are offered. The
Fitrana collected is
distributed under the
administrative set up
among the poor for them
to take part in the Eid
festivities. In addition to
Fitrana another
contribution called' Eid

Stevens Mafrige
passed away on
November 22, 2003 at the
age of 103 after a long
and abundant life. He was
born on July 4, 1900 in
Seattle, Wash. to Zachary,
the son of Lebanese
immigrants and Katherine
George Mafrige, the
daughter of Greek


immigrants. His mother
died when he was three
and Stevens was raised by
his father and his Aunt
Marianna. Zachary
Mafrige developed a
thriving business in
Seattle, owning and
operating the largest
department store in
Seattle, which reported
contained the first
escalator west of the
Mississippi. As a result of
the bank panic of 1907
and its aftermath Zachary
and family relocated in
Cuero, Texas Once in
Cuero, Zachery opened a
genera I store. In 1918,
Stevens joined his father
in business. Stevens

involves actual quilts -
Hancock Fabrics' Quilt of
Dreams project. This
ambitious undertaking
combines the talent and
dedication of thousands of
quilters around the
country. Hancock
designed 37 special fabrics
from which individuals
have been making lap
quilts inspired by the
hopes and dreams of St.
Jude patients. It's such an

calm post-war years. With
"we are all Lebanese" as
its mantra, it centres on
the need to recognize the
shared values held by its
different religious
communities, and to


embrace a common,
national identity.
"This nationalist,
secularist line is the
official discourse, the
politically correct one,"
says Nadim Shehadi,
director of the Centre for
Lebanese Studies in
Oxford.
This 'official view' is
widely shared by.the first
generation to grow up
since the war. "The
solution is secularism.
This is the way we live in
Lebanon now," says
Michael, a young Greek
orthodox student from the
largely Sunni Muslim
town of Tripoli. "We can't
have a leader for each
religion; we have to have
a secular government."
In reality, of course,
this secularism is li mited.
As signalled by its
political constitution
which stipulates that the
prime minister be a Sunni
Muslim, the president _a
Chrisfian and the speaker
of parliament a Shi'a
Muslim, Lebanon remains
a deeply religious country.
The power sharing
arrangement enshrines a
long, multi-confessional
tradition designed to
accommodate a variety of
religious minorities. The
new secularism,
according to Shehadi,
depends on it: "In
practice, it can only
continue while the
confessional system is in
place because this
resolves the sectarian
shares at the outset and
you can then get on with
other matters," he says.
This means the
cohesiveness of Lebanese
society and therefore its
peaceableness is bound
up with how its various
sects see each other. It
depends, in short, on
genuine religious
tolerance. Mohammad

several of the country's
interfaith committees and

give his name couldn't
wait to express his true
feelings about Hizbullah:
"I don't like them. They.
are unfair with people,
and they make a
distinction between

It was common for
local people, he adds, to
feign loyalty to the party
in order to get the things
they need. "They do it for
money," he says. "For

someone from

religious groups are also
running up against
sectarianism. One Druze
student, studying business
at the Catholic University

"Ii's hard finding a job,
hard mixing with
Christians. Some parties
of the Christians have
hatred towards us. If you
fill in an application for a
job in a Christian
organisation, the first
thing they ask you is:
Christian or Druze? Then
they ask you which
political party. Then they
tell you to go home. 'I will
call you later', they say.

established where girls

their families and raising
their overall standard of
living," former Jordanian
trade minister Dr.
Mohammed Halaiqa said.
"It can only be good for
the country as a whole."
One such worker is
Fatima Mohammed, an
unmarried 20-year-old. "I
have no plans to get
married anytime soon,"
Ms Mohammed insists.
"That is the last thing I am
thinking about." Working
72 hours a week at the
Silver Planet garment
factory Ms Mohammed
joined the factory's
workforce after the death
of her father left the family
without a breadwinner.
Leaving her village of
Ossera for Sabah where
new factories were being
established, Fatima and
her two sisters, Neemat
and Kafaa, broke with
tradition by becoming
working Jordanian
women, the first of what
has since become a steady
stream of women from the
poorer agricultural villages
entering the workforce.
Initially commuting to


the factory by bus, Fatima
and her sisters eventually
moved to the Al
Tajamouat QIZ near
Amman to take advantage
of the Silver Planet
factory-supplied housing,
the first such QIZ
dormitory programme for
Jordan's women garment
workers.
Many of the QlZs in
Jordan are Asian owned.
Established to circumvent
restrictions on Asian
manufactured garments
exported to the United
States. Because many
Jordanian QIZs are still
understaffed due to a
shortage of Jordanian
workers, their owners
have imported large
numbers of Asian garment
workers to maintain full
production at the
facilities, provoking
criticism that, being
foreign owned, the factory
jobs created are of a
transitory nature. Some
manufacturers are in fact
already planning to move
a portion of their
Jordanian manufacturing
activities to the new QIZs
being set up in Egypt in
order to take advantage of
lower Egyptian wage
regulations.

the US/Egyptian QIZ
agreement. To be tied to a
formal peace agreement
with Israel was not
palatable. But the
Jordanian results finally
persuaded them. Keen for
a comprehensive one-on-
one trade agreement with
the United States,
Egyptian officials now
view the establishment of
the QIZs as a necessary
first step, even though
they find cooperating with
Israeli businessmen -
under US _pressure -
particularly galling.
"Restricted access
under the QIZs is all very
well but we need a full
scale free-trade treaty for
this to have any
meaning," one Egyptian
trade analyst insisted.
"Otherwise it becomes
nothing but an exercise in


Israeli exploitation."
Egypt's foreign trade
minister, Rachid
Mohammed Rachid,
acknowledged as much at
the signing. "'the fact that
the Jordanian experiment
has been quite positive
convinced Egypt to go
ahead," he said last
December. "There has
always been an emotional
reaction to cooperation
with Israel on the public
side but once the business
cycle starts I think it will
be a much more positive
environment."
Breaking With
Tradition
The positive effects of
the QIZs, as promoted by
the United States, are no
longer in doubt. Many
Jordanians fear that they
will be short lived
however. Notoriously
fickle, the Far East factory
owners repatriate all their
profits, leaving their
Jordanian operations little
more than bare, minimally

that once other countries
open up more QIZs the
owners will simply transfer
their operations to take
advantage of the demand
for low paying jobs in new
countries and use their
Jordanian operations as
shipping warehouses,
simply fronting as
manufacturing factories.
For the US, the
promises of tariff
advantages to Arab
nations, coupled with a
non-negotiable condition
of peace with Israel, seem
to be working- Although
their strong arm tactics
have pushed the Jordanian
and Egyptian
governments into opening
diplomatic and trade
relations with their past
adversary it has not
necessarily made


Jordanians, Egyptians and
Israelis better friends. The
QIZs do, however, have
the desired effect of
promoting peaceful co-
existence rather then the
belligerent stand-offs of
the past. Such geo-politics
make little impression on
Fatima Mohammed
however. She thinks little
of regional peace and
more about getting a
promotion, possibly one
day leading to her setting
up her own garment
factory. "Maybe if I save
some money I'll open up
my own small operation in
my own village," she says.
That would be an even
greater break with
tradition. Few Jordanian
women have ever been
entrepreneurs and the rise
of a new generation of
female business owners
would definitely change
the Jordanian social
landscape, something that
might benefit the
country's entire economy.
