were interlocked intimately

was preceded'in death by
her parentsand several
brothersand sisters.
The El Kouri
familyarrived in Anadarko
in 1933. She grew up there
and graduated from
Anadarko high School.


Her father established The
Dixie Store there, and she
worked with her father.
She had operated the store
since her father's death.
Miss El Kouri was a
faithful member of the
First Baptist Church for
many years. She was a
kind and thoughtful
person, and cared for


other's needs. She had a
special place in her heart
for the elderly and for
children. She was
especially fond of her
nieces and nephews.
Miss El Kouri did a lot
of embroidery work, and
loved to study the Bible.
She had been a member of
the Eastern Star.


Survivors include her
brother, Henry Elkouri
and his wife, Gertrude, of
Fort Worth, Texas; two
sisters-in law, Rose
Elkouri of Anadarko and
Mildred Massad of
Corpus Christi, Texas,
numerous nieces,
nephews, cousins, other
relatives and many close
and loving friends.
Casketbearers were
Brian Elkouri, David
Elkouri, Emile Misleh,
Edward Misleh, Larry
Massad and Thomas Boyt.
In lieu of flowers, the
family has requested that
memorials be made to the
First Baptist Church in

Virginia, attorney Peter
Decker was asked by
ALSAC employee Jerry
Farrar to bead a fund-
raising chapter in the
Tidewater area.
"I had a bustling law
practice," Decker recalls.
"I was too busy, I
thought."
But by the time St.
Jude Board members
Richard Shadyac and Ed
Soma, MD, talked to
Decker, the charismatic
attorney knew he would
do it.
"I don't know anyone
who can say no to
Shadyac," Decker recalls.
"And Soma ain't no
slouch either," he adds, in
what friends and
colleagues know as the
Peter Decker style.

Decker, who enjoys
singing as well as
practicing law, recruited
his friends Bill
Abourjillie, Pacific
Romeo and Pat Versprille
to help.
One of Decker's
favorite memories is of an
event called "An Evening
with Pete," an
entertainment dinner
where Decker would
perform. "I never asked
Danny [Thomas] to come
down here because
everybody else was
always pulling him by the
hand and trying to get him
in front of them," he says.
But Decker always sent a
tape of the show to
Thomas. "Danny would
call me and tell me how
much he enjoyed the tape.
So after about four or five
years, Danny called me
and said, 'Peter, why
won't you let me be on
your show?"
"Think about that,"
Decker exclaims. "Danny
Thomas wants to be on


my show-" Decker
changed the name of that
year's event to "An
Evening with Danny."
Thomas went on to appear
on Decker's show three
more times.
Years later, the
Southern Virginia
Hampton Roads chapter
of ALSAC is still a strong
force in the Norfolk area,
raising more than $2
million each year for St.
Jude.
The group of four who
organized everything
from canister drives to
Teen Marches has grown
.to more than 30
committee members who
coordinate gala dinners
and the chapter's St. Jude
Dream Home.
Chapter president
Howard Webb says he has
been thrilled to be part of
the chapter.
"For me, being
president has been a
tremendous honor," he
says. "Everyone on the
board is a team player.


They are really dedicated
to saving lives."
Abourjillie credits the
success of the chapter to
Decker. "He is the force
behind the whole thing,
Without him, I hate to say
it, there would not be a
chapter."
Decker, however, is
quick to deflect accolades
to Webb and others in the
chapter. Webb, in turn,
passes those accolades on
to others. "It is amazing
how much. you can
accomplish when you
give-other people credit,"
Webb says. "They made
me look good."
"It's amazing how
much the chapter's
grown," Abourjillie says.
"I can't tell you how
much we did the first
couple of years but it
wasn't very much." But as
the Southern Virginia
Hampton Roads chapter
has grown and spread the
word of St. Jude in the

US-led occupation

inability to cope with the
insurgents which it
spectacularly did not
predict, believing instead
that allied troops would be
hailed as heroes as they
rolled into Baghdad. 'Ibis
failure has pushed many
disillusioned Iraqis towards
supporting the more
extremist elements
available to them.
Such elements
traditionally do not favour
the rights of women.
Today, even in the
ordinarily liberal parts of
Iraq, women are rarely seen
in public without a veil.
There is also mounting


anecdotal evidence that
honour killing, despite its
failure in the legislative
process, is on the increase.
The occupation has let
down women in other
ways. Many who had jobs
before war have not been
able to find employment
since with most of the work
going to men. This has led
to women, often war
widows, becoming
increasingly vulnerable.
Funds to support such
women have been
promised by the coalition
but, as yet, have not been
forthcoming.
It should be understood
that the majority of Iraqis,
well educated and used to
living in a secular society,
are not ideologically
opposed to women
enjoying equal rights.
However, desperate times

to resolve the country's
problems by their own
extreme means are bound
to gain popular support.
The situation for women
has been exacerbated by
the fact that surrounding
countries some with their
own brands of extreme
Islam are competing for
control of Iraq. In
particular, Iran, whose own
government enforces
Sharia law, is seeking to en
force its presence in the
new Iraq, as a liberal
Muslim
neighbour would only
fuel the increasing
movement for
liberalisation that Teh ran is
struggling to contain.
Tribes, crushed under
Saddam Hussein, have


reasserted their own rules
over their people and
further anecdotal evidence
is flooding in of terrible
crimes committed against
women including rape,
torture and murder.
A major concern for
women's groups is that
while they suffered under
the later years of Saddam
Hussein's reign, it was not
the subjugation of women
as an end that he desired.
His policies towards
women were a means to a
political goal that required
giving way to conservative
groups in the country.
Since the end of the
war, however, the
increasing erosion of
women rights is the
implicit aim of a section
of Iraq's new leaders. Far
from ending the

support of ordinary Iraqi
people and that it is simply
the chaos created by the
war that has allowed

suitable law enforcement.

then, an old oppressor has
been replaced by a new
subjugating force. All
democracies have troubled
beginnings, and it is not
only women who have
suffered si nce liberation;
but it must be hoped that
after all the suffering they
have endured, freedom in
Iraq will mean freedom for
all men and women alike.
