hospital in his parents'
name. "Looking back,
it's unfathomable how
$5,000 church dinners
grew into million dollar
events," he said.
Lou's favorite
memory of St. Jude:
Lou's most rewarding
memory, he said, is
when he forever
changed the lives of
three West Virginia
children approximately
30 years ago. Afflicted
with a rare blood
disease, their chances
for survival were slight.
When Lou read a
New York Times article
on blood diseases in
children quoting Dr.
Arthur Nienhuis at St.
Jude, he called his
friends in Huntington,
WV, and told them to
contact St. Jude. All
three children were
saved and are doing
fine. "Dr. Nienhuis
became attached to the
family and even
attended on the
children's wedding,"
Lou said. "In my eyes,
this was a miraculous
experience."

Iranian Wins Nobel Peace Prize

to the dispirited reformers
challenging Iran's ruling
clerics that the 56 year
old lawyers's newfound
clout and international
stature may breathe life
into their tired ranks.
"This prize doesn't
belong to me only. It
belongs to all people who
work for human rights
and democracy in Iran,"
Ebadi said in Paris, where
she was attending a
conference.
Ebadi, who was jailed
for three weeks in 2000,
has been a forceful
advocate for women,
children and those on the
margins of society.
"As a lawyer, judge,
lecturer, writer and


activist, she has spoken
out clearly and strongly in
her country, Iran, far
beyond its borders," the
Nobel committee said in
its citation.
Reformers in Iran may
now expect even more: a
firebrand willing to
directly battle the
powerful theocracy in the
model of other history-
shaping Nobel laureates
such. as Nelson Mandela
and Lech Walesa.
"She is an international
figure now," said Isa
Saharqis, a prominent
reformer and editor of the
monthly political journal
Aftab. "The conservatives
can not close their eyes to
this."
Iranian state media
waited hours to report the

CHF engaged Dr.
Baydas to conduct a
study on the Lebanese
formal and informal
financial markets. The
study clearly showed
that small businesses
and the working poor
had no access to formal
loans. To remedy this
deficiency CHF
decided to establish a
microfinance system in
co-operation with
several Lebanese
banks.
Dr. Baydas relates
that, "AMEEN started
with Jammal Trust
Bank, which initially
provided 25 percent of
all loans. This capital
risk share increased to
50 percent in June
2000. In May 2001
Credit Libanais also
joined AMEEN to

shop. He again repaid

the volume of her

beneficiaries of
AMEEN include the
small restaurant owner
who borrowed $1,000
to buy a chicken
rotisserie as well as the
42 year-old baker who
was able to open her
second bakery thanks
to two successive loans.

of only four and one-
half years, 17,546 loans

deep wound on her

released from the
hospital later that same

Islam phobic attacks
that parallels the
ongoing right-wing

is having an impact on
those in our society

song of hatred and
prejudice. As we have
requested many times
in the past, elected
officials and other
opinion leaders must
speak out against this,
and all other forms of
religious intolerance."

Since the beginning
of the year, CAIR has
received a number of
reports of physical
assaults against
American Muslims (or
those perceived to be
Muslim) and Islamic
institutions. Those
incidents included a
recent arson attack on a
Georgia mosque, a
cross burning at a
Maryland Islamic
school, the kidnapping
and beating of a
Massachusetts pizza


delivery man whose
attackers thought he
was Muslim, and the
shooting of a Sikh man
in Arizona who may
have been mistaken for
an Arab. Similar
incidents have been
reported in a number of
other states.

Last month, CAIR
demanded that federal
terrorism charges be
brought against an
Illinois man who got
off with two years
probation and "anger
management" classes
after he bombed a
Muslim family's van.
In Florida, a man was
sentenced to just 12
years in prison for
plotting to attack some
50 Islamic institutions
in that state. CAIR,
America's largest
Islamic civil liberties
group, is headquartered
in Washington, D.C.,
and has 16 offices
nationwide and in
Canada.

"Just another night in
Sin City," shrugs
Maloof, the 39-year-old
owner and operator of
the Palms. "The true
spirit of Las Vegas is in,
partying. Young people
don't want attractions.
They want to drink,
dance and have a good
time."

Under Maloof s
guidance, the Palms,
which opened in
November 2001 about
a quarter-mile west of
hte Las Vegas Strip, has
become a Pary Central
for young adults. The
Palms exudes sex, from
its Playboy-themed slot
machines to its
"playpen" bachelor
party suites. MTV used
the hotel to film a
season of the Real
World, a reality show


that chronicled the sins
of seven strangers.
Frequent visits by pop
stars and pro athletes
add to the cachet.

But sex appeal is
only part of the draw.
During the day the
Palms caters to a
different crowd:
retirees who come to
the casino for its slot
machines, generous
player perks and cheap
buffets. That simple
blend of sex and slots
ahs been a jackpot for
Maloof arid his family
who, with their
ownership of the Palms
and pro basketball's
Sacramento Kings;
stakes in Wells Fargo;
and a Coors
distributorship, are
worth at least $1
billion, according to
FORBES estimates.

Maloofs timing for
the Palms couldn't be
more perfect. Vegas is
in the midst of an
image makeover. In the
19990s casino
operators made a
concerted effort to sell
the city as a family
destination. Deeper-
pocketed competitors
like Steve Wynn and
Sheldon Adelson built
lavish theme resorts
anchored around
expensive attractions,
from ancient Egypt (the
Luxor) and
Renaissance Europe
(the Venetian) to big art
collections (the


Bellagio).


But sin never left the
desert. City marketers
have since abandoned
their efforts to portray
Vegas as a Disney on
Dice, and are once
again enticing visitors
with hedonistic
slogans, such as
"Vegas: What happens
here, stays here."

All of which plays
perfectly into Maloofs
hand. Though small by
Vegas-standards -- only
430 rooms, 7
restaurants, 3
nightclubs -- the Palms
is producing solid
returns.. Maloof
expects to earn $50
million in operating-
profit from the Palms
this year. Unlike its
highly leveraged


competitors on the
Strip, the Palms carries
very little deb on its
balance sheet,
generating a 20%
pretax return on
Maloofs $265 million
investment.

The Palms is just the
latest score by the
Maloof clan. It all
began in 1892, when
George's grandfather
Joseph Maloof opened
a grocery store in New
Mexico after
emigrating from
Lebanon. His father,
George Maloof Sr.,
steered the business
into wine and liquor
distribution, banking
and hotels. By the time
George Sr. died in
1980, he had become
one of New Mexico's
richest men.

Mary holding a rose
(and not a scepter)
appears in the art of the
thirteenth century. The
theme of Mary in a rose
garden or under a rose
arbor or before a
tapestry of roses,
inspired many artists of
the Rhineland.

During the
Renaissance the rose
garden theme came to
represent human love
and lovers. But at the
same time the religious,
Marian symbolism of
the rose was
popularized by the
devotion of the rosary.

The structured
prayer form of 150 Hail
Marys was termed a
"rosary." This
expression came from
the Latin rosarium or
rosarius, a name given
to works collecting the
best of some teaching.


For example, Arnold of
Villanova wrote a
R o s a r i u s
Philosophorum,
explaining that it was a
compendium, a
thesaurus, a treasury of
philosophy. Here the
symbolism of the
rosary ended in abstract
use. In contrast, the
rosary stands as a
precious anthology of
spirituality.

Our Lady of the
Rosary is Our Lady of
the roses, because the
flowers are the symbols
of greeting offered to
the Mother of God. We
greet her with spiritual
flowers.

In a different
perspective, Mary and
the Child Jesus offer
the rosary to their
devotees. In his Feast
of the Rosary (1506),
Albrecht Durer
represents Jesus and
Mary handing out
crowns of roses.

in Christian practice
may be summarized in
a brief prayer: May
God look with favor
upon our world, the
rose he created, that it
may more and more
expand its petals and so
glorify him, our Creator
and Father, in imitation
of the rose of Nazareth,
Mary, the servant of the
Lord.

shoes, and perfume for
every member of the
family is insisted upon.
The father should have
enough spending
money to give every
member of the family
as 'Eidee' to let them
enjoy and spend at their
own sweet will.
People, then, have to
proceed to 'Eid-Gah'
that is a designated
open space, where Eid
Prayers, in
congregation, are to be
offered. After the
prayers, there is a scene


of hilarious and ecstatic
occasion, where among
the chanting the Praise
of Allah saluting one
another, people joyfully
shake hands and
embrace each other.
The women have
offered their prayers
separately under an
enclosed canopy, apart,
but close to men. The
same scene of
happiness is expected
there.

After the Eid prayer
are over, people return
to their homes, from
different direction.
This is a custom for
Muslims to display
their unity,
togetherness, all around
the area, displaying
their beautiful attire,
with the expression of
Praise of Almighty
Allah. People are
invited to each others
homes. Gifts are
exchanged. Meals are
shared. Even the
uninvited people are
welcome simply to

met in conjunction with

of his hard work and
dedication he received

Award in 1999. At

traveling and paving
the way for future
conventions and has
finalized the contract

beginning to collect
toys for the annual Blue
Santa program. Last
year, our club and
individual membership

scholarship committee

guidelines of eligibility
for our club members

opened in the Egyptian
capital three years ago,
the full house gave the
longest standing
ovation in 140 years to
veteran actress Amina
Rizq who, at the age of
91 made a comeback to
the stage after 25 years
absence.

In a career spanning 81
years, including over
500 stage plays, 250
films and countless
television dramas, Rizq
amassed a plethora of
national and
international awards
and became a member
of the Egyptian
parliament's upper'
house in 1991, where
she served until her
death.

Rizq played a


demanding central role
in Black Rabbit, a
psychological terror.
Rizq played a crippled,
cold-hearted,
domineering mother
who hardly leaves her
armchair. Employing
Pinteresque pauses and
powerful expressions,
frequently conveyed
via her large dark blue
eyes, Rizq mesmerized
the audience,
delivering the chilling
message of the play to
their hearts as
effectively in her 90s as
she had three decades
earlier.

Her talent was first
recognized in the silent
movies of the 1920s,
especially her sensual
portrait of Suad the
Gypsy in the 1928
classic Suad El
Ghagariyah.


Since her appearance in
Egypt's first talking
movie, the romantic
comedy The Aristocrats
in 1932, critics have
raved about Rizq's
ability to express a
maelstrom of human
emotions just by her
facial expressions.

Although during the
course of her career she
appeared in scores of
films and later
television dramas,
theatre remained her
life's passion following
her first stage
performance at the age
of 11.

Born to civil servant
Mohammed Rizq in
1910 in Tanta 80 miles
North of Cairo, the
young Rizq had
displayed a talent for
acting by the age of six.
Her role-model was her


aunt -- Amina
Mohammed -- who fell
in love with performing
arts after attending a
screening of the first
film to be shown in
Alexandria in 1896 and
went on to play a
number of minor roles
in theatre arind films.
Fostered by her Aunt
Amina when she was
orphaned in 1918, the
eight year old Rizq
moved to Cairo, then at
the centre of Egypt's
budding film industry
that had burst forth a
decade earlier with
documentaries. Six
decades later Cairo was
the fourth largest film
production centre in the
world.

12 year old Rizq was
supporting her Aunt

Tourism
Bounces Back
The shock waves that
followed the attacks of 11
September 2001 spread far
beyond Ground Zero in
New York to change
political, economic and
social lives across the face
of the globe. The fact that
the attacks on the Twin
Towers of the World Trade
Centre and the Pentagon in
Washington were launched
via commercial aircraft did
nothing to help the
fortunes of the world
aviation industry, already
under considerable
economic pressure.
The terrorists have not
laid down their arms but, as
is the human condition, we
are learning to live with the
threat. Slowly, confidence
has returned and it seems
clear the world travel
industry has turned a
corner.
In the wake of 11
September, economists at
Egypt's Institute of
National Planning (INP)
released a report: The
Consequences of the 11
September Terrorist
Attacks Against America
on the Egyptian Economy,
which painted a gloomy
picture. One of the hardest
hit economic sectors, the
report predicted, would be
tourism, which accounts
for almost a. quarter of
Egypt's foreign exchange


receipts. The INP
expected the attacks on the
United States would cause
a decline in tourist
revenues of over 70%, or
approximately $2.7bn (out
of a total revenue of
$4.3bn).
However, what the INP
economists failed to take
into consideration was that
while the effects of the
terrorist attacks on the US
would reduce the number
of westerners prepared to
travel to the Middle East,
the number of Arabs
wanting to visit western
destinations would also
register a sharp decline.
By the end of 2002,
Egypt's Minister for
Tourism Mahmound El
Beltagui said that while
tourism receipts had
declined overall by around
$900m during the 12
month period. (September
2001 September 2002),
the latter months under
review had recorded an
upturn. Ministry figures
show, for example, that
during August last year
tourist traffic into Egypt
was up 15%, compared
with 2001. The major
reason, El Beltagui
confirmed, is that Egypt
successfully managed to
attract a greater number of
Arab tourists, who had
been scared off
destinations in Europe and
the US.Today, travellers
from Arab states and the
West are returning to the
land of the pharaohs with
