The Arabic word means, 'not to inflict any harm on anyone and 'to live in peace with others'. The injunctions in the Holy Quran are: "And if two parties of Believers fight against each other, make peace between them; then if after that one of them transgresses against the other, fight the party that transgresses until it returns to the Command of Allah. Then if it returns, make peace between them with equity, and act justly. Verily, Allah loves the just." It was there also that the cross was adopted as the symbol of Christianity: the Maronite cross is still known as the Antiochene cross. Years after Umm Kulthoum's death, the political currents had changed enough for the government to' begin thinking seriously about building an edifice to honour its most famous chanteuse. Plans were drawn up as part of a long- term project to establish museums in honour of the pillars of modem Egyptian culture, including composer Mohammed Abdel Wahab and poet Ahmed Rami, both of whom collaborated with Umm Kulthoum on many works. "We wanted a museum to give Umm Kulthoum the recognition she deserved," said Mohammed Abdel Dayim, a spokesman for the Cultural Development Fund, which allocated $1.5 million to building the museum. At the risk of further infuriating critics, the Ministry of Culture hired a foreign contracting firm to renovate the annex and design its exhibits. Officials faced a formidable challenge in gathering the pieces for the new museum, as Umm Kulthoum's personal belongings were dispersed among her many inheritors and some items had vanished into obscurity. The task of collecting the museum's nearly 300 pieces took over a decade to complete. "All precious items in the museum belonged to the family (of Umm Kulthoum) and were kept for up to.27 years before being offered as a gift to the government and all Egyptians," says Antar. "The collection is small, but it expresses her character and gives a deep insight into her personality." Opened to the public early this year, the Umm Kulthoum Museum features a modest collection of its namesake's personal belongings and memorabilia. The diva's signature red kerchief- something she always clutched while on stage- dangles in the display case beside the diamond- studded dark glasses -she wore late in her life. Inside, a contoured glass cabinet contains a small selection of evening dresses that the diva wore during some of her most memorable concerts. Other exhibits present her shoes, scarves and designer handbags, but hardly convey the classic elegance of the one Egyptians referred to as 'AI-Sitt' (The Lady). Umm Kulthoum's fashions, as well as her comings and goings, were always the talk of the town. But the celebrated singer was more than just a superstar, she was 'the voice and face Egypt'. Devastated by the Egyptian defeat the 1967 War, the diva stopped singing, resu ing only after then- president Gamal Ab<< Nasser summoned her for a special mission. "You have done with your singing what politicians have failed to do. You have united the Arabs," he reportedly told her. In that year, the Syrian twin brothers, Cosmas and Damian, were practicing medicine and pharmacy together in the city of Egea in Asia Minor or what is now Turkey. Being fervent Christians, they offered their services for free to the poor. They were arrested and chose to suffer horrible tortures and martyrdom rather than abjure their faith. They have been revered ever since as the patron saints of Medicine and Pharmacy. The Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian was the first church to be erected on the Roman forum. Monasticism and St Simeon In the Fourth Century , monasticism with its ideals of celibacy, poverty and obedience became a favorite way of life for the deeply religious. From Syria and Lebanon, it spread westward to Europe and monasteries began to pop up everywhere. Perhaps the most famous of the Syrian hermits was St. Simeon Stylite, a 5th century ascetic monk who spent 36 years perched on top of a column, which was 45 feet high. Pilgrims came from as far away as Rome and France to pray at the foot of his column and to be blessed by him. After his death in 459, a church was built around the column just outside Aleppo,Syria: this was the largest church in Christendom until an earthquake destroyed it in 1157. Given the limited resources -available, will the trade off costs of setting up and running this system reduce resources used in other critical areas of law enforcement? There is no clear indication whether or not the database system is functioning at a level that makes it a valuable law enforcement/terrorism prevention tool. There are reports that many FBI offices lack the equipment and training to even access the mega database, and that internal electronic communications within the agency is woefully inadequate. How do we insure that "voluntary" local and state efforts to fingerprint current visitors do not distract law enforcement officials from more effective investigations rather than this housekeeping assignment? Will this add to the capability of law enforcement to improve deterrence of terrorism? *No. Based on recent history, for example, the registration of 300,000 Iranians in the late 70s did not lead to any known concrete criminal indictments or prevent/deter any terrorist threats. The basis of these procedures is racial profiling because it targets Arabs and Muslim visitors. Using a race or ethnic-based profile logically means that, using previously announced criteria, there are millions of Arab/Muslim males under the ages of 45 that could be eventually required to register. It is more prudent to continue to build profiles based on existing investigations and apply them rigorously. There is no indication as to sources for the fingerprint records initiated and what constitutes "criminal" acts that are the criteria for inclusion on the database. Of the thirteen Popes who ruled over the Church between 678 and 752 AD, five were Syrians. Among the Syrian Popes were Sergius I, Constantine I, and Gregory Ill. Two of them, Sergius and Gregory, were canonized after their death. It was Saint Sergius who entrusted the English monk Willibrord with the task of evangelizing Germany. So the Germans were converted to Christianity by an English monk under the reign of a Syrian pope. Allah has chosen thee and made thee pure and has preferred thee above all. women creation" (8.3:42). The same God who has chosen Adam, Noah, and, the families of Abraham and 'Imran also chose Mary. The texts indicate three points clearly: Mary is favored; she is pure; is chosen over all women of the world. In comparing Marian texts of the Our'an with Christian sources we find some close similarities with the Protoevangelium of James and. other apocryphal writings. God chose Mary and prepared her for an important mission, "to adore and pay homage" (8.3:43). Mary was chosen to be a messenger of God and to bear a child through the Word of God rather than normal intercourse. Like their Christian counterparts did with the Bible, .Muslim commentators embellished the Qur'an. Muslim stories about Mary are based on the same apocryphal stories believed by Christians in countries where Islam replaced the Gospel. The important point in Mary's genealogy, for Muslim exegetes is that her family is from David's lineage, because Islam places great importance on pure lineal descent from the prophets. Nothing is said about Joseph in the Qur'an, but he has a place, in the Muslim tradition. Mary's Annunciation holds special significance in the Qur'an, especially in suras 3 and 19. Jesus, and Mary's- association with him, are not as clearly stated in Islam as in the Gospels, especially- Luke's, these beliefs are found in the Our'an or indicated in commentaries.. Both the Qur'an and the entire Muslim tradition consider Mary the most blessed and prominent of women. This belief reaches back to Muhammed as noted in Musnad by Ibn Hanbal. 1The founder of Islam placed Mary above even his daughter Fatimah, who, he said, would have been highest among women were it not for Mary. The Qur'an is clear that Mary was -born without sin, and that Jesus son. of' Mary was born of a- woman who had no relations with a man, since the common reference to a man is as son of his father, not of his mother. Christianity and Islam are both missionary faiths originating among Semitic peoples. They .have this in common: belief in one God, who is just, merciful, omnipotent, omniscient, and who acts in history. Accepting Jesus as prophet and Messiah,, Islam thus elevates his mother, Mary, to a special position and role. Greek manuscripts translated into Syriac During the Ommayyad Empire in Damacus, and for two centuries prior to that time, Syrian and Lebanese scholars were systematically translating the Greek classics into Syriac. These early translations were vital to the preservation of these ancient works because of events that occurred and that would follow. In 646AD, during the Arab siege of Alexandria, its library of 400,000 Greek and Roman manuscripts was destroyed by fire. Now that many of the original Greek works had disappeared, their Syriac translations alone survived. Even so, the Syrian and Lebanese scholars continued to play a dominant role in the caliphate. Under the Abbasid caliphate, the systematic translation of the Greek classics from Syriac into Arabic was begun. Thiyufil Ibn Tuma, a Maronite, translated Homer and Galen into Arabic. Thabit Ibn Qurrah, a Sabian, translated Greek mathematical and astronomical works, including Euclid, Ptolemy, and Archimedes. The works of Plato, Aristotle, and Hyppocrates, which were still available in the original Greek, were translated into Syriac by the prince of translators, Hunayn Ibn Ishac (809- 873), and his son and nephew then rendered these translations, into Arabic. The reason for this was that the older Syrian scholars like Hunayn who were fluent in Greek were not yet expert in Arabic, whereas the younger generation, which was schooled in Arabic, was no longer proficient in Greek. Arab and Muslim visitors to the United States are usually part of larger family or social groups based in communities throughout this country. These people and networks are now on notice that they are being singled out, once again, for procedures that are not applied to others. This will cause more tension in relations between local communities and local King Farouk in 1946 and the Lebanese Cedars Medal that she received in 1959.
