From CHELCO
Going solar just got easier for CHELCO members. CHELCO is offering members the chance to work with their co-op to build a large solar array, and those members can purchase a share of the output.

* in longleaf pine seedlings, to restore some of its
* beauty. During 10 years of public service in Tallahassee, I also had the honor to serve as Chief of Staff at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. During that time, experts in wasteWater, nutrient load, aquifer storage recovery, and hazardous waste were studying UIW (underground injection wells) quite a bit. Many of these people have dedicated their careers to these issues, and served with distinction. In fact, it must be said that, despite what most Floridians may believe, these folks work under extreme pressure to "do the right thing." I won't write a science paper here about the'enormous complications and assumptions with UIW's, and that's admittedly not my area of expertise. But when I served in the DEP, one of my first meetings was with a bureau chief over State permit reviews. This program manager was kind enough to present me with a coffee-table book style publication. It's called the Water Atlas of Florida. You only have to read the first 18 pages of this publication to know that the geology and geography of the site where this deep water injec.tion well would'be drilled --- about a mile into the ground in a fragile North Florida water geology system with massive basins -- is more than just a bad idea. I don't want all my "Mommy" friends to have to wonder if they'll wake up one morning in a horror movie with no water safe to drink or bathe in, or far worse.
Not only can we learn a lot from U.S. history on this issue, we can learn a lot from reading serious factual reference books that should be on the desk of every elected official in the Panhandle.
More than anything, I am writing to express deep gratitude to our newly elected State Senator George Gainer. His outright courage in speaking out against this Statepermit months ago probably is the litmus test upon which I will vote for him for any office in the future. His district comprises five counties and parts of a sixth. Jackson County, where the well is proposed, and Walton County, which would bear the most severe brunt of any leak or toxic plume, are connected underground with water resources aplenty. Every elected official in the Panhandle has a responsibility to look over the facts surrounding this issue. To do otherwise is to risk the economy that they are trying so hard to not only keep alive but grow.
For all you parents out there who take your kids fishing or kayaking and think they'll never remember the majestic of Florida when 'they're older: I do.
Lately, I've been on my knees praying with my late dad about this, but I know that's not all it will take.
Go to the Facebook page: SAFE WATER FOR WALTON. Please share that page with your neighbors. It is my fervent hope that each Walton County Commissioner will see the long-term "high stakes" here. I hope they will lend a voice and join other governmental entities opposed to this permit application. Our Walton recreational waterways and drinking water sources depend on it..

History is filled with stories about gullible people who get suckered. The ancient Greeks defeated the people of Troy after 10 years of fighting. The Greeks built a giant wooden horse and left it outside the city gates,- then sailed away. The, Trojans pulled the horse into the city as a victory trophy. Thatnght Greek soldiers crept out of the horse and opened the gates for the Greek army, which had sailed back under cover of night. The Trojans weretricked, and today the people of Walton County are being tricked by the Board of County Commissioners. With the help of the Planning Department, the BCC wants to change a minor development order from 5,000 sq. ft. to 50,000 sq. ft. A commercial building under 5,000 sq. ft. is treated as a minor development order, and is not subject to review by the public. A building more than 5,000

sq. ft. requires a major development order, meaning it is subject to public hearings.
So why shouldyou care? If the BCC gets its way, a project as large as a supermarket or motel could be approved and you wouldn't know about it until it's toolate. Mac Carpenter, the county's newly app ted Planning Director, argues that changing the Land Development Code's minor development order to 50,000 sq. ft. would speed up the approval process for developers. Seems as though the Planning Department is overworked. So why not hire a few more people than change the rules? Some members of the BCC are more concerned about keeping their developer pals happy than they are about the taxpayers. Beware of the Trojan Horse!
