The department arrested three suspects for distributing counterfeit bills in the Chipley and surrounding areas Thursday, but warns the counterfeits could still be circulating. According to the reports, police here have been investigating a case involving someone passing counterfeit bills to businesses in Chipley over the past two weeks. “We have determined, fortunately, only two stores were victim to the fake money,” said Police Chief Kevin Crews. “On March 19, we caught a break in the case and were able to stop a vehicle we felt was possibly involved in the passing of the fake money. As a result of the traf c stop, investigators with the Chipley Police Department were able to arrest three suspects who were allegedly passing the counterfeit money in the City of Chipley.” The suspects are also being investigated for counterfeiting by several other area law enforcement agencies, including the Bonifay Police Department, and the Holmes and Walton Counties report Guardian ad Litem shortage By CAROL KENT 638-0212 | @WCN_HCT Ckent@chipleypaper.com CHIPLEY – Judge Chris Patterson of the 14th Judicial Circuit praises volunteers with the Guardian ad Litem program as the ears and ears of the court – and the voice of the state’s at risk children. However, Judge Patterson and 14th Judicial Circuit Director of GAL Recruiting and Training, Theresa Roberts, say a volunteer shortage can make the voices of Holmes and Washington counties’ children more dif cult to hear. By law, every child under state supervision must have a guardian ad litem. “Guardian ad Litem volunteers are the boots on the ground for the judge,” said Roberts. “But (one person) can’t possibly visit all 70 kids in Washington and Holmes counties.” “There is a tremendous need for volunteers in Holmes and Washington counties,” agreed Judge Patterson. “They serve as the child’s advocate and conduit for me in court. The parents have representation, the Department of Children and Families have representation, and the children need representation, too.” CAROL KENT | The News Judge Chris Patterson (center) swore in the area’s two newest Guardian Ad Litems, Dorothy Powell (left) and Rhonda Dickinson Thursday. Baby Shannon now a bubbly 5-year-old By CAROL KENT 638-0212 | @WCN_HCT Ckent@chipleypaper.com CHIPLEY — It’s been nearly ve years since the eyes of the nation were xed on Chipley, watching as the search for 7-month old Shannon Dedrick unfolded. The conclusion was a rare happy ending, with Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock reporting “Baby Shannon”, as she became known worldwide, had been found. “We are the proud papas of a baby girl,” Haddock said in a national press conference. “There were a lot of grown men crying and shedding tears. Percentage-wise, we usually don’t get this kind of ending.” But Baby Shannon’s story had just begun. Now living with a family member in a another state, she celebrated her fth birthday while in Chipley Thursday, surrounded by her newly adoptive mother and the men and women who came to know her as their own. Law enforcement “family” who helped celebrate included Sheriff Haddock and Investigator Kenny Brock, who discovered Shannon hidden in a 2x3 locked cedar box in culmination of a search that took a total of four thousand man-hours and the involvement of numerous local, state and federal agencies. The multi-phase project, which would serve as a cooperative of local landowners, is meant to be an opportunity for residents to venture into aquaponics, a method of growing crops and sh together in a recirculating system. Community EVENTS By CAROL KENT 638-0212 | @WCN_HCT Ckent@chipleypaper.com The Washington County Sheriff’s Of ce warns area residents of a phoney phone call that “reeks of phishing” making its rounds in Washington County. “Never give out your personal information, such as your social security or bank account numbers to anyone you don’t know, no matter who they say they are,” said WCSO Public Information Of cer Andrea Gainey. Gainey stated one local resident followed that advice recently when she received a phone call at her place of employment from someone claiming to be a representative of JP Morgan Chase Bank. The “representative” advised the intended victim that her social security number was linked to the opening of a fraudulent bank account, but he could “take care of the matter” if she veri ed her personal information; otherwise, he’d be forced to close her account. The victim recognized she was being targeted for identity theft and refused to comply. When the would-be thief was unable to get the information from the victim, he called back and spoke with her boss, once again asking for the victim’s personal information. The supervisor disconnected the call, also refusing to comply. The WCSO reports a check of the phone number from which the call was generated con rmed the caller was not connected to JP Morgan Chase Bank or any other banking institution. “If you receive a phone call such as this, hang up immediately,” said Gainey. If you are concerned your personal information may have been compromised and used to conduct fraudulent transactions, contact your nancial institution, credit card companies, phone companies, and any accounts you suspect may have been opened or tampered with.” The WCSO reminds citizens a legitimate company will never ask for social security numbers, PIN, or passwords over the phone. Anyone wishing to report fraud, scam or identity theft activity may call the fraud line at 638-8477. A Fraud Specialist can also be requested to speak to community organizations by calling 638-6111.
