Convenience, savings compute at LCCC Ac By CALE SAUCER csaucer@lakecityreporter.com Lake City Community College has implemented a new registration and scheduling system - designed for students to have easier access to classes, schedules and other information - for the upcoming school year. The Sungard Banner Unified Digital Campus system, which replaces printed schedules and class catalogs, allows students to have the ability to regis- ter for classes, view their schedules, view the catalog of classes offered and pay tuition via credit card - all online. "We're empowering stu- dents more and providing better service" said LCCC Registrar Gayle Hunter. With the installation of the news system comes the elimination of printed schedules, which the com- munity college will no lon- ger provide in an effort to save money. The printing costs and the postage nec- essary to mail the sched- ules during the spring and fall is about $26,000 each semester. "If any money is saved Slick it will go to insuring the C. The pub- lic hearings have been set for the second and fourth Thursday in September. County officials were expecting to reduce fund- ing for some programs, but because of a reduction in the Third Judicial Public Defenders' budget, officials where able to shift some funding. "It was a pretty consid- erable amount," Williams said. "Whatever was saved in one area can be reallo- cated in another area. We work off of totals, but obvi- ously, anything that wasn't allocated that's a recurring cuts revenue could be reallocat- ed somewhere else." The county staff is work- ing to balance the county's budget, which has been reduced by more then $2 million for the 2009-2010 fis- cal budget. The staff was able make up some of the revenue reduction by finding new revenue sources, but the remainder of the budget was balanced by cuts. - "There will be 11 positions eliminated," Williams said: three positions currently vacant, two leased positions and two are through attri- tion due to retirement. The final four would be positions currently filled. LCCC: Schedules online Continued From Page 1A D. Yarbrough, director of public information. "We're looking at it trend-wise. Most students would rath- er do things online. This system will save students from having to travel all of the way out to the commu- nity college." The college's previ- ous operating platform, Sungard Plus, became outdated this year when manufacturer Sungard would no longer support it. It was time to purchase a more up-to-date enterprise resource planning system, school officials said. The community college conducted research and found 10 other colleges currently using Banner in the state of Florida. BY E-MAIL: news@lakecityreporter.com - a - - -- .- LETTERS TO Clunky government built on inexperience To the Editor: The "cash for clunkers," also known as money giveaway, was a big success, so we are told. Supposedly a clunker owner would be subsidized as much as $4,500 dollars if he bought a more fuel-efficient car. In turn, his old car would be destroyed signifying "helping the environ- ment." Why do people drive clunk- ers? It's usually because they cannot afford car payments. Is the government going to assist with the monthly car pay- ment, too? Didn't we already go through this with the housing crash? We made finance loans that people couldn't pay. The cash for clunkers is the same path. There is much more to this blunder. Participating car. dealers relinquished their com- puter access to the federal gov- THE EDITOR ernment, domestic and foreign, under the guise of checking for fraud (under this program, according to a report on Fox News Channel). This is the biggest breach of privacy in American history. In addition, I spoke to one of our local auto salvage owners. He traveled to testify in front of our leaders and against the "cash for clunkers" giveaway. He testified the destruction of the turned-in clunkers would hurt his business. He will not have access to parts other people driving the clunkers will need. People who enjoy their clunkers will have to give them up sooner because they can't get parts. I talked to a man in SJacksonville on Wednesday. His neighbor runs a transmission repair business employing four employees. His business was rebuilding 10 transmissions a week until "clash for clunkers." Now he is rebuilding two trans- missions a week. He has to lay off two employees. Also, our President has more czars than America has had presidents in our history. These czars are not confirmed by congress and answer to no one. The Fox News Channel reports these czars include open com-- munists, criminals, environmen- tal activists and lobbyists. America needs C.P.R. right now. Our new leaders are so inexperienced and liberal that America's existence is in jeopar- dy. We need to stand up, speak up, and stop the destruction of our beloved America and return to our constitutional way of life before it is too late. "Our constitution professedly rests upon the good sense and attachment of the people. This basis, weak as it may appear, has not yet been found to fail," John Quincy Adams, Jan. 27, 1801. Robinson will walk on at Huntingdon College By TIM KIRBY, tkirby@lakecityreporter.com John Robinson couldn't get enough kicking, and now he is getting a shot at the next level. Robinson has been invit- ed to walk on at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala. Robinson, a two-year var- sity kicker and punter for Columbia High, graduated this spring. He received the Outstanding Special Team Award for the Tigers. R.o b - inson kicked 19 PATs and two field goals as a senior and had Robinson 20 PATs as a junior. He went on to play in the East-West Senior All Star Game in January and realized he still had the bug. "After the season, I didn't wantto stop." Robinson said. "Coach (Craig) Howard printed me off a list of 10 schools and I sent film and contacted them." Robinson made visits in Ohio and North Carolina, but Huntingdon showed the most interest. The head coach is Mike Turk, who spent 13 years at Troy University before taking over the Hawks in 2006. Robinson said Hawks and the position coach who recruited him had known Columbia kicker and punt- er Thomas Olmsted, and that might have gotten their attention. (146) def. Jennifer Johnson, La Quinta, Calif. (147),3 and I. KICKER: Robinson starts Wednesday Continued From Page 1B Woods wins No. 70 - -F 0 - - a5 gorgeous." As might be expect any- where in Alabama, the foot- ball is important and good. The Hawks were 8-2 in 2008 and were runners-up as new members of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Huntingdon lost the deci- sive conference game to LaGrange (Ga.) College, also a new member of the conference. This season, the Hawks will play home games at Samford Stadium and they close out the season against Birmingham-Southern and South Alabama. As a Division III school, Huntingdon does not offer athletic scholarships. Robinson will stay in the dorms, and he has family in the area. Wednesday is the day to report. A lot of team success rides on a kicker and Robinson said Howard instilled confidence in him. "Coach Howard is the most inspirational person I have ever met in my life," Robinson said. "He always complimented and encour- aged me. He was not the type of guy to bring you down." Robinson came up through the Little League Football ranks. At Lake City Middle School he played soccer for two years. He went back to football as a freshman at CHS, but missed his sophomore year recuperating from surgery. "I like playing football," Robinson said. "I was always kicking in the front yard. I used two pecan trees for practice. It took a lot of practice. As a freshman I could not make an extra point." Kicker can be a lonely spot, Robinson agreed. "If a quarterback messes up,, he gets another chance right after that," Robinson said. "If you miss a field goal, it is a one-time shot and you hear about it a lot. You want to be perfect." Robinson has fans who will stick with him on the misses. His parents are Sam and Judy Robinson. "I want to thank my mom and dad for their support," Robinson said. "My family has always encouraged me and I couldn't do without them." ft - - S- 0 0 oom i 0 41M -~p - S S- 4 *A 40M F 4W a-* * - o awn lo 4 --- Copyrighted Material _._ Syndicated Content : Available from CommercialNewsProviders Available from Commercial.News Providers * - Ab. -d o. 4 I =Moab * I SCOREBOARD . lw 4d, 41W r -fA AS I (t(M I ft - - I psihe Wwwymmd -0o a 41 e-a sw- a.'
