"To be able to graduate college by the time you
finish your senior year of high school, you've got
to put in the maximum effort. They've done very
well. I'm proud of them," said Haley Elerbey, the
three students' guidance counselor at Malonr High
School.

Elerbey said they are the first Malone students
she knows of to graduate from college before their
high school careers are officially over.
"They are the first we've had to graduate like
this, but we have a large number of students who

Church Street improvements draw closer

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Jackson County commissioners on
Tuesday took another step toward
improving Church Street in Cypress.
The board awarded the $2.6 mil-
lion resurfacing and widening project
to Anderson Columbia.
The improvements are partially
funded through a Small County
Outreach Program grant (SCOP)
from the Florida Department Of
Transportation. DOT is picking up
$1.7 million of the cost and the rest,
$869,146, will come out of the coun-
ty's one-cent sales tax revenues.
The county awarded bids on sever-
al other projects Tuesday, and started
the bidding process on some as well:
With one fiscal year ending in a
few months and another beginning,
commissioners will start the weeks-
long budget-setting process soon. In
preparation for that task the county is
looking for prices from the suppliers
who will keep the local government
in the materials that will be needed
on a regular basis during the coming
year.
For instance, commissioners
authorized county Purchasing Agent
Stanley Hascher to put out a request
for bids on a yearly contract.to stripe
county roads and parking lot.
He also got approval to request
bids on the purchase of various sizes
of grader blades that will be needed
by road and bridge in the coming
. year.
Hascher was also authorized to.
seek bids for an infrared camera
needed to determine heating and
cooling loss and moisture levels in

homes that could be eligible for
weatherization assistance next year.
Commissioners authorized
Hascher to seek a supplier for the
county's yearly supply of various
sizes and types of culvert pipe need-
ed by the road and bridge depart-
ment.
On the flip side, the board also

authorized Road and Bridge
Superintendent Al Green to find a
buyer for a stockpile .of used and
unneeded cultert pipe. Green told
commissioners that,, because of its
volume, it is becoming .in eyesore"
in the road and bridge yard.
The count\ isn'l quite through
with annual puichac contracts - an

important one is, coming up in July.
That's when Hascher anticipates
seeking bids for the county's annual
fuel supply.
The county buys regular gasoline
and two types of diesel fuel to keep
its vehicles on the road.

upcoming edition of the Floridan.

ing to Department of Corrections

Plessinger said that early infor-
mation was sketchy, but did give
the following account based on
initial reports from within the
institution near Sneads.

fronted by a guard about a rule
infraction tried to hit the correc-

BAPTIST COLLEGE OF FLORIDA

During the spring 2008 grad-
uation ceremony recently held
at the Baptist College of Florida
(BCF) in Graceville, two
Florida men of faith, Peter L.
Chamberlain, president of B.R.
Chamberlain & Sons, Inc., and
James W. McCall, Pastor
Emeritus at First Baptist
Church Sebring, and BCF
alum, were both presented with
Honorary Doctorates of
Christian Letters, one of the
highest honors granted from an
academic institution.
BCF President Thomas A.
Kinchen commended both men
for their exemplary lives of
service and devotion to Jesus
Christ. "Pete Chamberlain epit-
omizes the life of the dedicated
Christian businessman,
Kinchen said.
"He has set the base of his
business in the provision of our
Lord; his priorities in the serv-
ice of our Lord, and his hope in
the grace of our Lord. Through
service in his church and com-
munity Pete has been a channel
of our Lord's blessings for
countless persons around the
world. I 'am grateful that Dr.
Peter L. Chamberlain is a friend
to the Baptist College of
Florida and to its president."
According to Kinchen, Jay

McCall is his ideal image of a
Baptist preacher and pastor.
"He has the heart of a kind pas-
tor, the fervor of an ardent
evangelist, and the mind of a
keen student of the word of our
Lord," said Kinchen. Kinchen
told BCF graduates how
"McCall is the very finest
example of what an alum of the
iaptist. College of Florida
should be. My fondest wish
would be that each of the grad-
uates of the Baptist College of
Florida would serve our Lord
with the boldness, grace and
dignity displayed by Jay
McCall."
Kinchen was the keynote
speaker for the graduation cere-
mony where sixty-four students
received degrees in the college's
Assembly Center, making it
one of the largest graduating

participate in dual enrollment. It's kind of
my pet project. It means a lot to me, given
the price of tuition and books, that these
kids are able to take the classes they want
to take for free. They basically got a
degree or certificate for free, but for the
price of gas to get to school," said
Elerbey.
Barnes and Shack both participated in
the dual enrollment program and then
enrolled in early admission with Chipola
College.
With dual enrollment, explained
Elerbey, high school students from ninth
grade and up can take up to 11 hours of
their classes at the college, earning them
college credits while simultaneously
completing high school requirements.
Once a student becomes a senior, they
are able to become early admitted into the
college as a full-time student, taking all
classes on the college campus.
"It is very difficult to accomplish, but
this was their goal and it was important to
me to help them accomplish it," said
Elerbey.
She said that for the workforce devel-
opment certification, Taylor was required
to make at least a 17 in English, an 18 in
reading and a 19 in math on the ACT to
enter the program. He logged about 400
hours of training in the program. He also
took all of his elective classes at the col-
lege.

"Everyone says I do things backwards
and I definitely did this backwards," said
Barnes.
Barnes said she's always been a driven
student.
"I'm a big believer that you shouldn't
waste your time," said Barnes. "I try to be
productive with whatever I do and I love
school. I love a challenge and Chipola
offered classes that interested me."
She said her parents are proud by the
accomplishment, which is made sweeter
by the fact that her degree was virtually
free.
"They think it's cool. Neither one of
my parents went to college. They're both
brilliant people, but just never had the
opportunity to do what I have done. I
think they're glad to see that now people
have opportunities like this," said Barnes.
Barnes is currently the president of the
Malone Future Farmers of America.
She's one of only two candidates in line
for vice president of Area I for the Florida
FFA, and will find out June 13 if she's
voted into the state office.
If she's named vice president, she'll
take a year off of school and serve the
FFA, which includes going to Spain and
seeing the farming system in Europe.
If she's not elected, or when she's done
with her term, Barnes said she plans to
attend the University of Florida.
She wants' to be a public relations spe-

cialist for an agricultural agency or organ-
ization.
"I love agriculture. I have a passion for
it and they need people who can speak on
behalf of the agriculture industry. Why
not represent an industry that I find
extremely important?" said Barnes.
Keyonis Shack said she's always been
enamored with school.
"No one ever had to really make me do
anything. I always wanted to make good
grades," said Shack.
She said dual enrollment was some-
thing she knew she would do, and that
Elerbey was the one who directed her
toward early admission into Chipola.
"She was like a mom that way. She
really led me. She's just the best coun-
selor," said Shack, who spoke on the
phone form her job as a clinical assistant
at Sunland.
Shack plans to attend Florida A&M
University and become a pharmacist.
She said that getting so far ahead took
some sacrifice, but was well worth it.
"It's definitely been a compromise. I
mean, there are certain events at high
school that you miss out on. You may not
get to run for office for any extra curricu-
lar activities. But on the other hand, you
get a lot of college out of the way and it's
a degree you don't have to pay for. I'd say
that's worth it."

Missing woman

found alive in ditch

SPECIAL 10 THE FLORIDAN

Authorities found a missing elderly woman alive in a
ditch about an hour after she was reported missing
Wednesday.
The following was released by the Washington County
Sheriff's Office:
"On Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at approximately 6 a.m.
Washington County Sheriff's Office received a call in ref-
erence to a missing senior citizen in the Chipley area.
The elderly female, who has a history of dementia and
severe diabetes, was last seen at 1:00 a.m. at home in her
bed.
Deputies were dispatched immediately and due to the
urgency of the matter, the Washington County Sheriff's
Office K-9 team was also dispatched and Washington
Correctional Institution K-9 team was placed on standby.
Deputies and the WCSO K-9 Team arrived within min-
utes, followed shortly by Washington CI's K-9 Team who
immediately initiated K-9 tracking.
The K-9 with Washington CI's team picked up the
woman's scent and after tracking for a distance located the
woman approximately 1 hour after receiving the initial call
in a six foot deep ditch where she had apparently fallen and
crawled a couple hundred yards, approximately V2 mile
from her home.
EMS arrived on scene and transported the woman to
Northwest Florida Community Hospital where she was
treated for minor injuries.
"When you hear a story than ends like this one, we know
it is due in large part to a well-organized collaborative
work by both agencies" states Sheriff Haddock. "The K-9
Team from Washington CI responded rapidly and with
their assistance, we were able to locate this senior before
the situation, could escalate."

Mind your

business

- Dr. Jerry
Osteryoung

Don't trust too much?

- After reading this article, many people will think that I have
been dropped into a big pit of pessimism; however, I really hope
that every reader and entrepreneur will understand the message
I am trying to get across. Trust should always be monitored.
Entrepreneurs can never assume that it is there and that it will
always be reciprocated.
In business, we have to trust that our staff is being honest with
ui and that our employees are protecting our assets. There is just
no way for any entrepreneur to be completely protected from
employee theft at all times. If we were to make a business theft-
proof, the rules and regulations would be onerous, taxing and so
detailed that nothing would ever get done. There are just always
going to be penetrable holes in our theft shield. That being said,
however, trusting in employees too much will allow you to relax
-the theft shield to a point where it becomes very dangerous.
.-All of us have frailties and weaknesses, and I just might have
thlt most. If you put enough temptation in front of some people,
they will steal from you, -and they will continue this dishonest
behavior until it is stopped. After all, if an employee gets away
with stealing once, they will think that they can do it over and
over and never get caught. It is the job of the entrepreneur to
minimize the temptation to steal.
. One entrepreneur had a very trusted employee steal from her.
The entrepreneur thought that this employee was always look-
iqg out for her best interests, and as a result, she allowed too
much trust to develop between them. She inadvertently found
out that this very trusted employee had been stealing from her
for over five years. While the theft was awful in terms of the
monetary loss, the betrayal of trust was what shook this entre-
tfeneur's values and.foundation to the core. She had a funda-
srental belief and expectation that if she looked out for her staff,
Sfey would look out for her. When this belief collapsed, she just
semed to lose her bearings and confidence.
Sith time, she eventually did.recover, but her trust foundation
'as never fully restored. What she did gain as a result of this sit-
uation was an insight into the unreasonableness of her initial
assumption. Trust is not always a two-way street.
She is doing very well now, but she clearly understands that
no trust can ever be 100%. She set up a number of additional
checks and balances in order to reduce the potential for theft as
much as possible, and she is so much more cautious about lim-
iting the amount of blind trust.
This is a lesson that every entrepreneur can benefit from. No
Matter how long an employee has worked for you, you still need
it,be cautious, as employees and situations change. Limit trust
arid utilize checks and balances to protect yourself and your
'business. You cannot assume that your trust will be reciprocat-
ed; In addition, trust issues are not limited to direct monetary
theft. Entrepreneurs must trust that employees are doing their
jobs as intended. Even things like incorrectly priced bids, unau-
thrized overtime on the time clock and missing office supplies
ate all indirect violations of trust. Now go out and make sure
thit you have more than adequate checks and balances in place,
n0d never assume that trust will always be reciprocated.
You can do this!
