Enjoying nature should be done with common sense

As warm weather awakens our
senses to outdoor .activities, Florida's
wildlife is ever-present.
That's not an alarm to keep people
away from nature, just a reminder.
Florida is home to many species of
animals that are both beautiful and
potentially dangerous. A\oiding

unnecessary contact with these-crea-
tures is important for their preserva-
tioni as well as the safety of humans,
said Stan Kirkland, of the Florida
Fish and Wildlife Commission.
Two of Florida's wild inhabitants,
poisonous snakes and alligators,.
should and can be avoided.
"Every year someone makes a mis-
take that could have been avoided.
Someone tries to capture a snake and
they get bitten. If it's a poisonous
snake, there's just no room for error,"
Kirkland said.
And if you are not certain that a
snake is non-poisonous, the advice
fritn-,'ildlife officials is to simply

leave it alone.
"I remember ,a few years ago a
woman called my home after church
and she was just in a panic because
her daughter had picked up a snake
and brought it in the house. Later
there was no indication that the snake
was poisonous, but children ha-ve to
be taught to leave the snakes alone,"
Kirkland said.
Snakes to beware of include dia-
mondback rattlesnakes, canebreak
rattlesnakes, dusky pygmy rattlers,
cottonmouths, coral snakes, and only
in some parts of Florida, the copper-

Markings on snakes can be confus-
ing to the inexperienced person. That's
why avoidance is the best means of
safety where snakes are concerned.
"The best and safest policy concern-
ing snakes is if they must be handled,
leave it to the experts," Kirkland said.
"And another thing to remember is that
if you have a pond or open water on
your property, you will have snakes.
But that's natural."
Kirkland said many people move to
Florida wanting a natural setting for
their homes. Soon they realize that
snakes, coyotes and other animals are
part of the natural setting.

because they don't want snakes or their
property," Kirkland said. "Well, that's

Coyotes are all over the state as well.
They mainly hunt rodents and other
small creatures.
Kirkland said in the last two years,
four bears have been killed or injured
in Jackson County after being struck
by vehicles. Two of those accidents
occurred on U.S. 231, and the other two
somewhere along or near U.S. 90.

Violent storms kill 8 in Iowa and Minnesota

Powerful storms packing large
hail, heavy rain and tornadoes
made for a deadly Memorial
Day weekend across the
nation's midsection, killing at
least seven people in Iowa and
a 2-year-old child in
Iowa Homeland Security
administrator Dave Miller said
seven people were killed
Sunday by a tornado in north-
east Iowa - five from
Parkersburg, a town of about
1,000 some 80 miles northeast
of Des Moines - and two
from nearby New Hartford. At
least 50 injuries were report-
"It's been a long time since
we've had those kinds of
injuries and deaths reported,"
Miller said.
Witnesses reported parts of
Parkersburg - particularly
the town's south side - were
reduced to rubble, including
most of the town's high
school. The Des Moines area
had heavy rain and lightning
Sunday night with wind gusts
of 70 mph.
Warning sirens sounded
early enough to give residents
time to seek shelter, said
Parkersburg Mayor Bob
"Without that, we would
have a tremendous amount of
injuries and loss of life,"
Haylock said. "People were
down in their basements and
waiting it out."
Iowa Gov. Chet Culver
issued a disaster proclamation
for Black Hawk, Buchanan
and Butler counties, a move
that helps coordination
between state and local
The storms came after three
days of violent weather else-
where across the nation. Rural

Firefighters make
progress on
California wildfire
GILROY, Calif. - Days of
moist, cool weather helped fire-
fighters get a handle on a
destructive wildfire in the Santa
Cruz Mountains that 'scorched
3,900 acres and at least 29
homes. Easing winds and lower
temperatures helped keep the
blaze from spreading and fire
crews had the blaze mostly con-
tained early Monday, according
to the California Department of
Forestry and Fire Prevention.
"It's really not moving at all,"
said David Coursey, a depart-
ment spokesman. The 6-square-
mile fire was expected to be
fully surrounded by Tuesday,
fire officials said. The blaze still
threatened 550 homes and 20
commercial buildings.
While some evacuees were
let in on an hour-b. -hour basis
to survey the damage, hundreds
of residents were told to stay
away following the outbreak of
the fire in the mountainous
region about 15 miles south of
San Jose. Five firefighters have
suffered minor injuries.
In a community meeting at a
church Sunday afternoon, resi-
dents eager to sleep in their own
beds were given bad news.
Officials said a quick turn in
weather could re-ignite the
blaze, and that they would have
to wait until Tuesday to return
home. Meanwhile, nearly 3,000
personnel worked to cut fire
lines through centuries-old red-
wood forests as a swarm of hel-
icopters and air tankers doused
flames from the sky.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
declared a state of emergency
for Santa Cruz and Santa Clara
counties to allow access to state
funds. The firefighting effort
has cost $6.1 million so far,
Coursey said. ;

Tim Halback, of the
National Weather Service in
Romeoville, Ill., said the
storms were caused by a huge
warm air mass that had been
centered over the southern and
western great Plains several
days ago. When it began mov-
ing northward into Minnesota
and Canada, a cold high fol-
lowed in its wake, sparking
severe storms.
The weather system
stretched from western Kansas
to northwestern Minnesota
early Monday and was headed
through Illinois toward
Wisconsin and Indiana. As
much as 4 inches of rain may
have fallen overnight in
extreme southern Illinois, the
weather service said Monday.
In Minnesota, a violent
storm that struck the St. Paul
suburb of Hugo killed a 2-
year-old child and critically
injured a sibling of the victim,
Washington County Sheriff
Bill Hutton said. The chil-
dren's parents also were hos-
pitalized, as were three other
adults and another child.
Washington County, Minn.,
Sheriff Bill Hutton said
Monday that 40 to 50 homes
were uninhabitable in Hugo
and 150 to 200 others were
damaged to some extent. Gov.
Tim Pawlenty planned to tour
the storm-ravaged . town
Power had been restored
Monday to most of the more
than 15,500 customers
blacked out in the area, prima-
rily in Hugo and Forest Lake
to the northeast, Xcel Energy
spokeswoman Patti Nystuen.
Hugo Public Works
Director Chris Petree said his
family took shelter in their
basement, huddling against a
foundation wall, before the
storm lifted his house off the
ground and completely wiped
out the second floor.
"I put my daughter down

Farther south, at least three
weak tornadoes touched down
Sunday in the Texas
Panhandle. No injuries or
building damage were report-
ed in the sparsely populated
region, meteorologist Jason
Jordan said.
About 100 people have been

killed by U.S. twisters so far
this year, the worst toll in a
decade, according to the
weather service, and the dan-
ger has not passed yet.
