Fire an d many other calls kept rescue .
teams busy all weekend.
Fire destroyed the home of a Jackson
County woman Sunday night. According
to Jackson County Fire Marshal Chuck
Sawyer, firefighers were dispatched to t
1911 Cantebury Lane at 11:42 p.m.and
found the mobile home fully engulfed in
flames.
The fire was extinguished, but the crew
was called out to the home again at 6:13
a.1m. Monday, becatise thIe presence of
smoke indicated the fire miight have re-
kinrdled. Additional water was applied to
the snioldering trailer.
An investigation into the cause of the
fire continues. Sawyer said.
The owner of the trailer was listed as
Michele Skeen.
According to Sawyer, Jackson County
Fire Rescue responded to 57 calls between ,t
Friday and Monday. Most, lie said, were
routine medical calls.
Other calls included a 9 a.mn. Sunday
dispatch in response to light smoke show-
ing in a building at Apalachee
Correctional Institution in Sneads.
Sawyer said there was no fire in that
case. It appears the smoke came from a
central air conditioning unit in the west
wing of the prison.

Crowds brave the heat

Despite weekend temperatures
that hovered near 100 degrees,
crowds braved the sweltering heat to
attend several events.
The Barefoot Music Festival at
Compass Lake in the Hills went *'
well, organizers say. Planning has
already begun for the second version w l
of this event.
Arty Pinello and other volunteers
have scheduled a debiicfin, t ld,,\.
where they will compare notes and
plan improvements to make the 2011 Members
festival even better than the inaugu- ing the B
ral effort. Skinner /
Pinello said vendors wanted to be
closer to the stage than they were, for
instance, and that the festival layout
will probably be realigned for next
year to satisfy their concerns.
He also said the weekend heat
wave made it clear that more lighting
is needed on the festival grounds, so
concerts can be held at night when
cooler temperatures prevail.
The festival featured a 5K run. a
concert by Shenandoah, a Patsy
Cline tribute by Melanie Boso, and
entertainment 'from other bands like
The Springs, Rebel Syndicate, -,.
Emerald County Line and more.
Pinello estimated about 3,000 peo-
ple were present at one point in the A tunnel I
festivities. That's a bit less than Chattahoo
organizers had hoped for, but Pinello Floridan
said it was still a pretty good crowd
considering the relentless heat that good time,

Pinello said 100 runners partici-
pated in (lthe Barefoot 5K.
As the festivities continued at
Comipass Lake. some oiliher residents
were busy with an event at Citizens
Lodge.
The Central Jackson Relay for
Life event raises money for cancer
research, Io honor those who have
died from cancer, and to celebratile
cancer survivors.
It lasted 18 hours, starting just
after midnight Saturday and running
just past 10:30 that evening. With a
sports-based theme, special activities
were scheduled every half an hour.
At one points, around 5 a.m., pair-
ticipants walked a lap around thie
relay Irack in their pajaias, and
another time dribbled basketballs
around it. There was also a softball
throw lap. a soccer kick lap, a golf
tee lap. and more.

Two charged with

stealing from FHP

vehicle

A Florida Highway
Patrol cruiser was bur-
glarized Sunday. and Michael D. Terez L.
Marianna Police Chief James Wallace
Hayes Baggett said pub-
lic involvement was the key to rounding up, two sus-
pects in the theft.
Neighbors Michael Dontavious James and Terez
Lamar Wallace. both 18. were arrested and charged
with loitering or prowling, possession of burglary
tools. and burglary of a conveyance.
According to a press release from the Marianna
Police Department, an eyewitness called police to
report two men on bicycles were peering into cars and
trying to open some of the vehicles' doors as they trav-
eled along Deering and Dickson streets.
Officers were dispatched to the area, but could not
initially locate anyone meeting the caller's description.
But shortly after police left. officers got another call
to the same area. The witness reported seeing the men
coming out of a dark area behind some houses shortly
after thie officers departed.
The officers went back and encountered two men'at
the intersection of Guyton and Lafayette streets.
When asked for identification, one of them threw a
small piece of broken spark plug porcelain on the
ground. police said.
Officers then saw a screw driver sticking out of the
other man's pocket.
In a subsequent search of the two men, officers
reported finding a bag with more pieces of broken
spark plug porcelain - police say it is used to break
window glass. The press release did not specify which
person had the bag of plugs.
Officers also reported finding an iPod Touch on
Wallace. The iPod was later identified as having been

Hurricane preparedness

week gets under way

S.TAFt RirORl
Sunday marked the start
of Hurricane Preparedness
Week. just a few days before
lie official start of hurricane
season, which runs JunLe I1-
Nov. 30.
With an above average
amount of hurricane activity
forecast this year, officials
urge everyone to use this
week to get ready for the
season.
Some key ways to do that
are to review family emer-
gency plans and prepare a
supply kit with non-perish-
able food, water. flashlights.
batteries and other essential
items. Put together a list of

emergency numbers. Make
arrangements for pets. espe-
cially keeping in mind the
possible need to evacuate.
Assess your home to see
if any imlprovelments are
needed to make the structure
more storm-resistant.
Review insurance policies
and prepare an inventory of
belongings now in case you
have to make a claim later
on.
To help' you prepare for
the coming storm season,
the Jackson County Floridan
has put together a hurricane
readiness guide which will
run in Sunday's paper.
Consult it for more detailed
information.

Getting it Right!

In its May 21 edition,
the Floridan published a
story about Billy Brown
being charged with tax
evasion. While the com-
plaint filed by the state
lists Brown's place of
employment as DeShazo's
Auto Service in Marianna,
the tax evasion allegedly
occurred while Brown was
owner of Marianna
Transmission, prior to Ihis
employment al D)cShazo's.

"Thank God for people looking out for

The various teams offered plenty of
snacks for those who attended, using
the concessions to raise money for the
cause. Survivors were introduced, and
invited to tell their stories. Luminarias
were lit in honor of loved ones lost to
cancer. The.participating teams had a
chance to compete with each othei; for
bragging rights in several categories.
Cottondale Elementary School won
the 'best site' trophy.
Becky Hopkins, a data entry opera-
tor at the school, helped put the
school's fishing campsite together.
She said volunteers at the school
robbed their husbands' tackle boxes
and other fishing gear to make the site
look like a bait-and-tackle store, and to
illustrate their site's motto, "Fishing for
a cure:"
"We just tried to come tip with
something we didn't think anyone else
would do," Mopkins said. "With this,

we had easy access to some things vwe
needed. Everybody pitched in and
brought some things from home."
They acquired some wooden pallets
to create the front porch of the tackle
shop, strung fishing nets, hung cricket
cages, and threw in some tackle boxes
and other items to complete the look.
They also fashioned a paper mache
fish from newspapers, aluminum foil
and glow-in-the- dark paste.
Hopkins said Cottondale

raising more than $9(X) on that alone.
The basket's main prize was four
tickets to Wild Adventures theme park
in Valdosta, Ga. Rita Wooten won the
basket. Hopkins said.
Cottondale Elementary also walked

away with the second place spirit
award, she said.
American Cancer Society represen-
tative Jenny Bartels said the Relay
raised at least S37.tXX) this year.
"It was a good event." Bartels said.
"A lot of thle community showed up.
and people were in high spirits. We
had a lot of returning teams: they were
there in lull flbn'e, and we had a lot of
Inew teams, too, so it was really a great
effort."
Across thle Apalachicola River, the
city of Chattahoochee hosted profes-
sional boat races Saturday and saw
respectable crowds, as well.
