FRIDAY

No rest on Christmas for some

BY ASHLEY McKEEN
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
For most county residents, Christmas
will be an enjoyable day with their fami-
lies, opening presents and bouncing from
one relative to another.
For others, it will be just another day on
the job.
While some are rummaging through
their stockings or baking holiday goodies,
Jackson County's emergency personnel
will still be attending to duty as usual.
Holiday or not, Christmas or not, duty
still calls for more than 150 Jackson
County residents!
"Of course, all the officers would
like to be with their families on
Christmas. I think it's tougher on the
ones with kids," Marianna Police Chief
Hayes Baggett said. "But it's one of

those things, it's part of the job."
According to most emergency officials
countywide, Christmas day, along with the
following holiday weekend, will be treated
as regular work days with regular schedul-
ing.
Baggett stated that tthe Marianna Police
Department will have three officers work-
ing the normal schedule of 12-hour shifts
throughout the holidays, not including dis-
patchers. /i
Major Donnie Branch of the Jackson
County Sheriff's Office said their officers
will be on normal schedules also. '
According to Branch. there will be
about seven patrolmen, a fully staffed dis-
patchers unit and one investigator on call
Christmas day.
Capt. Sean Collins of the Marianna Fire
Department stated in a phone interview
Wednesday hat on both Christmas eve and

day, there will be the normal staffing of
five firefighters on the usual 24-hour shift.
"Although our guys spend the day away
from home, some have their families come
for lunch or dinner at the fire. house,"1
Collins said. "And sometimes if one of theft
other guys that are off can be talked into it,
those working can go home for an hour or
so and open presents with their kids."
Collins added that although some spend
their Christmas on the clock, community
members have never neglected to show
gratitude. :
"We are blessed with community mem-
hbers showing their appreciation, starting
early in the season with local churches
bringing food ind cookies. If it's one thing
I can say for us, we certainly don't go hun-
gry," Collins said.
In .conjunction with the Marianna Fire
Department; the Jackson County Fire

Rescue team will have 12 firefighters on
staff on both Christmas eve and day.
Beyond those who will still be serving
and protecting this Christmas are the doc-
tors and nurses of Jackson County.
According to Rosie Smith with the
Jackson County Hospital, more than 100
clinicians on three different shifts will
working Christmas day.
"Since hospitals never close, we are nor-
mally staffed, just like any other day,"
Smith said.
With two 12-hour nursing shifts and
three rotating 8-hour shifts for all other
personnel, Christmas will be a busy one
for Jackson County Hospital.
All emergency personnel will be stand-
ing by this Christmas. But officials
expressed their hope that the holiday stays
mostly quiet, and that residents celebrate
the holiday safely and happily.

FPU offers power monitors Driver hits
NESEYKMYELH fireman

FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER

An innovative new energy conservation
tool called the PowerCost Monitor may help.
Jackson County residents reduce energy costs
and counteract the rise in electric prices set
for Jan. 1.
Florida Public Utilities filed a purchased
power cost adjustment with the Florida Public
Service Commission in September.
According to FPU officials, the end result
is going to be higher electric prices for con-.
sumers, starting the first of the year. The
increase is estimated at a total of 13.8 percent
for residential electric service rates.
To help residents adjust to the rise of
prices, FPU has recently implemented a
PowerCost Monitor program.
The program was initiated as a way to
allow interested residents to use the new ener-
gy conservation tool at no charge for a trial
period.
FPU's Conservation Specialist Mason
Brock stated in a phone interview Tuesday
that FPU currently has eight monitors they
plan to rotate between homes for a trial basis.
Brock explained the monitor works as an
awareness tool, displaying a home's actual
energy consumption.
Although, it does not lower actual usage in
any way, the monitor concept is based on
behavior change, in which families can see
which appliances use the most electricity,
Brock explained.
The monitor consists of two components.
One is a sensor unit that attaches directly to a

accident
STAFF REPORT
A Marianna resident was
detained by Calhoun County
authorities Christmas Eve after
he struck a fireman and a fire
truck, and then fled the scene.
According to the Florida
Highway Patrol, Richard F.
Bouch II, 29, was driving south
on County Road 167 in Calhoun
County at 12:13 a.m. when he
came upon several emergency
vehicles parked in the northbound
lane with their emergency lights
on.
SThe emergency crews were
attending to an injured driver
from a previous accident
According to the highway
patrol, Bouch "drove upon the
scene too fast" and veered left to
avoid rear-ending a Toyota pick-
up truck in front of him. In doing
so, he struck William L. Truax,
45, of Altha, a fireman who was
in the northbound lane directing
traffic.

Dairy looks to expand local market Reckless
By DEBORAH BUCKHALTER -- Reckless
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER h , r '

A family-run dairy farm on the Jackson-
Calhoun county line has taken a big step for-
ward.
A few weeks ago, the Ocheesee Creamery
opened for business as a subsidiary of Shady
Nook Farm. It's located on State Road 69
south of Grand Ridge, and the acreage strad-
dles the two county lines.
The farm celebrates its 20th anniversary
this year. Until about a month ago it had been
raising Jerseys cows and selling their milk in
bulk exclusively through a co-op, which
sends it to a number of markets.
Now, .owners Paul and Mary Lou
Wesselhoeft are bottling their whole and skim
milk, as well as cream and old-fashioned but-
termilk. They're also churning butter to sell
directly to customers at their farm, and on
grocery shelves in the area.
They also sell a limited supply of cheeses
bought from other suppliers.
Making ice cream may be their next ven-
ture.
Their milk is pasteurized but non-homoge-
nized, so that the milk still has cream rather

Marianna police arrested a
motorcycle rider Wednesday after
he was pulled over for alleged
reckless driving and then became
combative.
According to a news release
from the police department, offi-
cers were dispatched to the
Chipola River bridge on
Lafayette Street for a motorcycle
that was being driven recklessly.
Officers observed a black motor-
cycle come across the bridge and
head west into Marianna.
One officer ran a check on the
bike's registration as it turned

Family of slain Panhandle couple moves on

BY TRAVIS GRIGGS
PENSACOLA NEWS JOURNAL

PENSACOLA - A framed
copy of a newspaper story dated
Christmas Day, 2005, hangs on
the wall near the kitchen inside
the Billings' Beulah house.
The front page photo depicts a
grinning family sprawled across
the house's playroom floor. In the
middle, surrounded by a swarm
of smiling kids, Byrd and
Melanie Billings beam with
pride.
It is a snapshot of a-life many
people didn't understand. A life
with a dozen adopted children,
many with special needs. A life
of challenges, to be sure, but also
happiness.
.A life that on July 9, tragically
was cut short.
t'Christmas was my mom's
favorite holiday," said Ashley
Markham, 27, as she sat at the
kitchen table in her parents'
Beulah home Monday.
Her mom loved to shop, she
said, and relished in the annual
opportunity to shower the kids
with gifts.
It's a role that, this year,
Markham is doing her best to fill.
In the living room, a dozen
stockings hang from the mantel
over 'the fireplace. A Christmas
tree draped with flashy decora-
tions towers overhead. The house
is light and cheery, and, for the
moment, surprisingly quiet. The
dull drone of cartoons on the liv-
ing room TV is the only noise.
Sunlight pours in through broad

picture windows, illuminating
walls covered with wedding por-
traits and framed photos of happy
family memories.

There's no sense that some-
thing terrible happened here.
"On the normal day, it's more
of a distant memory," Ashley
said.
The grisly details of what hap-
pened to Byrd and Melanie
Billings in their home on July 9
played out in the national news.
Five masked men wielding guns
burst through the doors as some
of the children slept upstairs. In
the chaos that followed, Byrd and
Melanie Billings were shot and
killed.
The attackers escaped with a
safe that contained only heirloom
jewelry, children's medication
and family paperwork not the
stack of cash law enforcement
investigators say they were seek-
ing.
Eight people have since been
arrested in connection with the
crime. Seven face charges *of
first-degree murder.
The following months have
passed in a blur, Ashley said.
Meetings with lawyers. Talks
with investigators. News confer-
ences. Courtrooms. And the kids.
Always the kids.
It hasn't left anyone in the fam-
ily with much time to think about
what happened.
"In quiet times, f think about it
more," she said.
. She pauses, lost for a second in
thought. But the moment doesn't

last long.
In a flash, a swarm of kids,
dogs and commotion arrives,
flooding the room with chatter
about toys, adventures and. a
newly built fort in the woods
behind the house.
Ashley smiles.
"Normally it's pretty calm.
They're really good kids. They're
very well-mannered," she said.
"They talk a lot, but what kids
don't?"

In the weeks after the attacks,
Ashley and her husband, Blue
Markham, scrambled to take over
care of nine children who lived in
Byrd and Melanie's house.
At first, the kids stayed in the
couple's home in Perdido and
with family friends. But after a
few days, the kids wanted to go
home.
Ashley said she and Blue had
no real choice but to go along for
the ride.
"I've heard people say, 'How
can they stay in the house?' But
where else are we going to go?"
Ashley said. "It's not every house
that can be a home for nine kids."
' The upside is that life for the
kids has stayed, more or less, the
same.
There are still birthday parties,
bedtimes and the 5 a.m. chaos of
getting nine kids dressed and out
the door in time to catch the
school bus.
"I've got it mastered to where I
can get it down to an hour,"
Ashley said. "No one can do it as
good as my mother, but I'm

going to give it a shot."
The kids still talk about the.
"bad men" every once in a while,
she said.
The four youngest kids, ages 4
to 7, don't really understand what
happened. The five most severely
disabled children may never fully
understand.
But the older kids, ages 8 to 11,
live normal lives. They know
what happened. They know their
mom and dad are dead. But why?
It's a question even the adults
struggle to answer.
"How do you explain death to a
child when you don't really
understand it yourself?" Ashley
said. "I know there's a heaven. I
know everything happens for a
reason. ... I don't know how to
explain it to them."

As months have passed, the
questions have tapered off. For
the most part, the kids 'are doing
well in some ways, they're doing
better than Ashley.
"I think if I didn't have them, I
probably wouldn't have gotten
out of bed for three months," she
said.
Ashley said the family, was also
aided by an outpouring of sup-
port from the community in the
weeks after the murders.
As the story made national
news, they received a wave of
donations from people across the
country, which have been used to
establish a trust fund for the chil-
dren.
"It was really an overwhelming
thing to see," Ashley said.

Friends and families have
stepped, up, donating their time
and providing emotional support.
"We really want to thank
everyone in the community who
has done so much for us. With the
support we have, and the friends
and family we have, I know it'll
be OK."
The couple are trying to decide
the best option to care for the
children in the future. They have
met with family counselors and
experts, but for the moment, it's
difficult to find time to think
much past Christmas.
After a time of relative quiet in
the house on Monday, Adrianna,
11, the oldest of the kids, began
doing the holiday math 'in her
head.
After a moment, she pro-
claimed "We've got three days
left!"
Ashley thought about it for a
second, then said "No, we've got
four."
Adrianna groaned as her
expression drooped.
But her disappointment didn't
last long.
About that time, Blue returned
home from work and was greeted
'by an eruption of cheers, bugs
and high-fives..
That's how things aie in the
Billings home.
The chaos has a way of forcing
things forward, drowning out
thoughts that would otherwise
linger on the bad.
For a second, everything feels
OK. And in that second, every-
thing is.

line disappears once the milk is shak-
en for drinking.
The Wesselhoefts elected not to
homogenize because they say it's
healthier for the consumer as a lower-
cholesterol alternative. It is also bet-
ter for the digestion, he said...
The bottles they use for the milk
and cream are glass, and require a $2
deposit for the first purchase. When
the bottle is returned clean, the
deposit is refunded if the customer
doesn't buy more. Repeat customers
simply switch their old bottles for
new and are not charged a second
deposit.
Increasingly disillusioned by the
co-op, the Wesselhoefts say they
hope to be completely independent of
it soon.
The couple started small in 1989,
on land that Mary Lou grew up on
with her dairy farmer parents,
Monroe and Naomi Yoder, and her
seven siblings. Her parents raised
about 35 cows, and the Wesselhoefts

Now, they have about 150 young
stock which are not yet of milking
age, and about 120 milking Jerseys.
The Wesselhoefts say they think its
important to raise their own so that
they know the quality of the herd.
They chose Jerseys over black-and-
white Holsteins, they say, because
they produce well for their size.
Feeding costs are also less expensive,
and the feed-to-milk ratio is better.
"It's like feeding a running back as
opposed to a linebacker," Mary Lou
Wesselhoeft explained. "They're also
friendlier, .and they calve easily."
Their diet is mainly pasture grass
and hay, although the cows eat grain
when they come to the milking barn.
The milk produced at Shady Nook
Farm has won many quality awards
over the years. The Wesselhoefts
were Farm Family of the Year in
Calhoun County back in 1999.
The farm is located at 28367
Northeast SR 69, astride the Jackson-
Calhoun county line, with part of the

license. He provided the
officer with his business
card instead.
Wunderlich was again
asked for his driver's
license. According to the
release, Wunderlich told
officers he was not going to
provide it, and began to
walk away.
The officers were forced
to physically restrain him.

Wunderlich became com-
bative, according to the
news release, and after a
brief struggle was taken
into custody.
A license check revealed
his license was suspended,
and that Wunderlich had
multiple warrants.
According to the news
release, Wunderlich began

The marketing effort is starting
small - so small, in fact that
Wesselhoefts' Smart car was big
enough to haul McDaniel's first sup-
ply last week. But they're hoping the
business will expand quickly.'
The milk is currently marketed at
McDaniel's grocery in Sneads, Main
Street Produce in Chipley, Piggly
Wiggly stores in Blountstown and
Bristol, at Tomato Land and New
Leaf Market in Tallahassee, For The
Health Of It in Seaside, as well as the
farmers market there.
Prices, plus a $2 bottle deposit on
milk and cream, are:

* A half-gallon of skim is $2, a
quart $1.50.

Tigers

win big|

Malone dominant in 71-44

home victory over Pirates
BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
The Malone Tigers added another impressive victory
to a strong early-season push Tuesday night, routing the
Sneads Pirates 71-44.
It's the seventh consecutive win for the Tigers after
starting the season 2-2.
TJ Smith scored 25 points to lead the Tigers, knock-
ing down five 3-pointers on the night, including four in
the first half.
Malone dominated from the opening tip, taking a 21-
7 first quarter lead and a 3&-14 edge at halftime.
The win came on the heels of a triple-overtime win
over Rutherford, and dominating victories over Aucilla
and Graceville.
The Tigers are playing at a very high level to start the
season, and coach Steven Welch said that he has been
impressed.
"Yeah, we're rolling a little bit right now," the coach
said. "It's good to see the kids start buying into the
defensive end of the court. When you play a county
rival and only give up 44, that's pretty good. We've
into it."
The Pirates cut the lead to 15 in the third quarter, but
Malone was able to hold on to a 51-34 advantage after
three periods.
Malone resumed its domination in the fourth by dou-
bling up the visiting Pirates.
"We knew Sneads would make a run because they Malon
always do:' Welch said. "But we just stayed with our: Tigers
defense, made some tough shots, and we were able to conseo
get it done." owin, w

FLORIDAN.SPORTS EDITOR
The. Marianna Bulldogs coasted to another
easy win Tuesday night, taking a 61-31 win
over Arnold in Marianna.
The Bulldogs, now 9-1 on the season, have
won four in a row since suffering their first
loss of the season against Bainbridge on Dec.
Marianna jumped out to a 26-9 first quarter
lead, and extended to a 38-12 edge at the half.
Kruize Pinkins led the Bulldogs with, 18
points, with Tre Long adding 10.
RJ Bowers also scored nine,.and Tommy
Stephens scored eight.
"I thought we played great defensive
early," Marianna coach Travis Blanton said
after the game. "We got off to a fast start, and
I thought we did a good job on (6-foot-11-
inch Arnold center Nate Hicksi early.
"'We got some run.out baskets, kept our
eyes up, and hit people on the run. We got ,
some easy baskets early, and that got us going
good. We also kept them off the glass and
rebounded the ball well."
Blanton credited the 6-foot-7-inch Pinkins
for his defense on Hicks, a Tulane signee.
"He's a big, long kid," the coach said of
Hicks. "But I think'Kruize stepped up big and .
just played good defense. We never let him
get anything easy, and the guards doubled
down well. They dropped down and helped
when they needed to.
"We just did a good job defensively. I'm so .
proud of how the kids are playing defensive-
ly right now. It's exciting to know they want
to play that consistently every night on Marianna's Kendall Leek
defense. I hope if continues." earlier this season. The

Stops Marlins
BY SHELIA MADE
FLORIDAN CORRESPONDENT
The Marianna Bulldogs jun-
ior varsity basketball team
picked up another win Tuesday
night at home against the
Arnold Marlins. '
The 46-24 victory was never
in doubt from the opening tip
of the game. Marianna fresh-
man'Qua Royster set the tone
early, nailing a 3-pointer with
just seconds off the clock.
Following a bucket by DJ
Granberry, it was Royster
again for three to make it an 8-
0 game. Arnold answered with
a pair of 3-pointers of their
own to narrow the lead to 8-6.
Royster would counter with
a lay-up to end the quarter with
the Bulldogs leading 10-6.
, Granberry opened the sec-
ond quarter with a shot before
Emmanuel "Poochie" Batson
posted three points, while the
Marlin offense was kept off the
boards. With two minutes to
play, back-to-back shots by
-Arnold and a couple from the
line made it a 15-11 game,
Batson and Granberry coun-
tered with a couple of baskets
to pull away 19-11l
A shot at the buzzer by
Batson gave the Bulldogs a 22-
12 halftime lead.After the
, break, the Marlins went on an
8-2 run to cut it to four.
Batson came up with two
consecutive 3-pointers, one at
the buzzer to put the Bulldogs
ahead 32-20 after three.

Lady Tigers take another close victory

BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
The Graceville Lady Tigers took
another close victory Tuesday night
at the Lyman High School Christmas
Tournament in Longwood.
GHS. won its first game at the tour-
nament 56-53 over St. Petersburg on
Monday.
The Lady Tigers made it two in a
row Tuesday night with a 40-39 vic-
tory over Clay.
Graceville overcame a 24-15 half-
time deficit to get the win.
Jessica McClendon sealed the vic-
tory for the Lady Tigers by stealing a
Clay inbounds pass with 13 seconds
left.
McClendon scored 15 points to
lead Graceville, making 7-of-11 free
throws.
Mychea Williams also scored 14
for the Lady Tigers, including six in
the fourth quarter.
Graceville coach Jon Habali said
his team got back into the game on
the defensive end.
"The girls showed a lot of disci-
pline on defense and put the clamps

down in the second half," the coach
said. "That was more team basketball
than we have ever played. It was a
team effort. The girls fought hard the
entire second half."
The game was tied 8-8 after one
quarter, and Clay started to take con-
trol in the second period.
"We started off flat," Habali said.
"In the first half, everyone looked
like they were scared to make a mis-
take."
That changed in the third quarter,
as the Lady Tigers outscored Clay
16-6 to go up 31-30 heading into the
fourth. Williams knocked down
back-to-back jumpers to push the
Graceville lead to five with 3:30 to
go, but Clay immediately answered
with a 3-pointer to cut it back to two.
A free throw by McClendon
pushed the lead back to three, but
Clay answered with another basket to
cut it to one.
Clay had a pair of chances to take
the lead late, firing up an airball with
1:30 to play to give the ball back to
GHS.
But a jump-ball gave possession
back to Clay with 13 seconds to play.
V *

After McClendon's clutch steal,
the Lady Tigers were able to run out
the remaining seconds of the game.
"We just fought hard," Habali said.
"We played defense, we rebounded,
and we were more patient on offense.
We were working to find the higher
percentage shot."
Winning a pair of close games has
been a big boost, according to
Habali, who-saw his team surrender a
21-point second-half lead in a 62-59
Dec. 17 loss to South Walton.
"I think this gives us confidence
that we can win these types of
games," the coach said. "We learned
you have to play from start to finish.
If you take your foot off the gas,
you'll get run off the floor.
"We've got to play the entire game.
You can't take one possession off
because two points could cost you
the game."
Habali said that the trip to
Longwood has been a good experi-
ence for his team.
"We're coming together," the
coach said. "We're playing well

Malone
Continued From Page 1B

The Malone coach said
he was especially
impressed with his team's
effort Tuesday given that it
came just three days after
its three-overtime thriller
- against Rutherford at
Chipola.
"A couple of older fans'
said to me before the game,
- 'we'll see what we've got
tonight,'" Welch said. "We
could've come in and rest-
ed on what we did the other
night. Sometimes you start
thinking you've arrived
when you win a big one
like that.
"But I'm proud of how
we came out. We had a
spark, we were energized,
and we were really all over
the place early on."
Welch said the consistent
energy his team is bringing
on the defensive end is the
biggest factor in the Tigers'

current hot streak&
"We're just looking in
and playing good man
defense," the coach said.
"In the Cottondale game (a
68-58 loss), we tried'to
press a lot, but we let them
get loose a lot because we
were not real disciplined.
"After that, we decided
to be more disciplined on
the defensive end and get
some more rebounds. That
leads to offense and allows
us to get some transition
opportunities. That's espe-
cially important with the
way we like to get out in
transition and play fast." -
Marcus Leonard added
12 points for Malone, with
LaDarius McElroy and Ty
Baker scoring nine each.
Will Holmes led.Sneads
with 11 points, with Josh
Rogers adding 10 and Jeff
Davis nine.

Welch credited Leonard,
a transfer in his first year
with the Tigers, for adding
a valuable element to the
team off the bench.
. "Marcus is doing .a good
job for us," the coach said.
"He likes his role off the
bench. He likes coming in
because he's a versatile
player and can play a bunch
of positions. He usually
doesn't sit long. He plays
starter minutes, but he
comes in and it changes the
dynamic of the game.
"With Marcus, TJ and
LaDarius on the floor at the
same time, that's three that
know what to do with it."
The Tigers next head to
Dothan for the Dothan City
Tournament.
Malone takes on

Mind your

Holiday Season 2009

If you can'tfeed a hundred people,
then just feed one.
* -Mother Teresa

As the holidays approach, now is a wonderful time to
make sure that your staff knows that you and your com-
pany care about them.
There are so many ways that you can do this, and
there is no one right way. However, you need to find
your way to ensure that each employee feels valued
during this very special season.
Given this tight economic environment, you can
accomplish this without spending a great, deal of
money.
The point is not necessarily to spend money, but
rather to make your staff feel appreciated.
One thing you can do to make the season special for
your staff is to send each employee a handwritten note
acknowledging the contributions they have made to
your organization. This will mean so much to your
staff, and it will cost nothing but a little bit of your time.
Another thing you can do is to reach out to a family
that is experiencing tough times and have your compa-
ny sponsor them, allowing staff members to help with
gifts for the family.
Getting together and giving to a family that is really
in need will frequently build team spirit, and giving is
so much better than receiving.
Giving presents to someone that is in greater need
tends to minimize the hardships that your staff might be
feeling.
, Consider holding a staff gift exchange with an estab-
lished limit on expenditures per gift.
There are so many ways to do this, and by allowing
your staff to decide how they would like to organize
their gift exchange, you can spread goodwill and team
building.
The gift exchange approach allows your staff to get
presents without costing the firm.anything.
Another way to spread holiday cheer is to do some-
thing as a group that does not cost much money. For
example, some firms have a family movie night where
all staff members and their families attend a movie at a
set time.
Of -course, the movie should not be R-rated as young
children will be present.
Yet another inexpensive option is sharing a staff meal
at the office or going out as a group.. Alcohol should be
* avoided at all costs as this causes nothing but problems
and generates little value. It is just not worth the risk to
encourage alcohol consumption at any holiday or busi-
ness function.
- Now go out and make sure you have a plan in place
to make each of your employees feel special during this
wonderful time of-year.
You can do this!

FW & JtilitUs Contractors..M
Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, water was flowing, It even drowned
the mouse.
The presents all pretty under the tree are now all wet and really soggy.
Mamma threw her kerchief and knocked off my cap, "You should have called the plumber
weeks ago and we could have prevented all that"[
Christmas was rough and not even snowy, instead of St. Nick, we had to get Plumber Joey.

ATTENTION HOMEOWNERS!
Dontt let your Christmas be a disaster Call us to make an appointment and get those little problems
taken care of before It is too late.
