County off ag

disaster list

But farmers

here can

still apply
Jackson was one of only seven Florida
counties which did not receive a primary
disaster declaration as the result of pro-
longed period of freezing temperatures
this month.
However, because Jackson County is
contiguous to five of the designated coun-
ties, farmers here will have the same
opportunities as the 60 declared counties.
Farmers in Clay, Seminole and Walton,
three of the other seven non-designated
counties, will also have the same privi-
-leges because they, too, are contiguous to
a designated county.
Only Santa Rosa,. Escambia and
Okaloosa counties are completely left out.
SThe seven non-declared counties did not
have enough collective damage to at
least 30 percent of crops to.qualify.
Individual farmers in Jackson and the
other two contiguous counties can, howev-
er, apply on their own for assistance under
the disaster declaration.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture
made the determinations based on infor-
mation reported to it through county and
state sources about losses due to cold
weather.from Jan. 2 through Jan. 14.
On Jan. 15, Governor Charlie Crist
asked USDA Secretary Thomas Vilsack to
declare all 67 counties in Florida as agri-
cultural disaster areas.
"We are grateful to Secretary Vilsack
and our federal partners at the USDA for
granting this needed disaster assistance to
Floridians," Crist said in a press release
about USDA's decision Monday.
"The USDA designation will assist our
agricultural industry in obtaining econom-
ic relief for losses sustained during the
exceptionally long freezing temperatures."
According to the press release, the des-
ignation makes farm operators in the 60
designated counties eligible for assistance
from the Farm Service Agency. Potential
assistance includes FSA emergency loans
and the Supplemental Revenue Assistance
Payments program, that was approved as
part of the Food, Conservation and Energy
Act of 2008. The FSA will consider each
application on its own merit by taking into
Account the extent of losses, security avail-
able and repayment ability, according to
the news release
Farmers can call their local USDA
Service Centers for more information on
eligibility requirements and how to apply.

Federal judge denies Country Crossing restraining order

A federal judge has denied Country Crossing's request
for a temporary restraining order that would have barred
a potential raid on the development.
U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson made his ruling
around 3 p.m. Monday. He also urged both parties to set-
tle the issue in a reasonable manner.
"It appears that at this time both the association and
defendant John Tyson have adequate remedies to vindi-

cate their rights and concerns in an orderly and reasoned
manner and without the "drama" that appears to have so
far attended this matter," Thompson wrote in his ruling.
The association can file a state-court civil action for
review of the legality of the machines at issue, and Tyson
can file a state-court civil action and obtain the immediate
seizure of the machines by way of injunctive relief, if the
state courts agree that his contentions are so strong as to
entitle him to immediate relief. The court hopes that the
parties will pursue such orderly processes or something
comparable to them," Thompson wrote.

The ruling means that should task force Special
Prosecutor John Tyson get a search warrant for Country
Crossing, there is no legal decision restraining a potential
Thompson also indicate the ruling is not meant to infer
that the machines at Country Crossing are legal or illegal:
"In making this statement, the court should not be
understood to hold that it is appropriate for this court, as
a federal court, to make a determination of the machines'

Chipola blows past Pensacola

BY DOSTIN KENT in the second half, with a 3-point The Indians committed only 11
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR play by Marvin Fitzgerald, and a turnovers on the night, and out-

For four' straight games,
Chipola coach Jake Headrick had
to watch his team shoot horren-
dously from the field in four
straight losses.
On Saturday night, the first-
year coach finally got to see his
team put the ball in the hole.
The Indians broke out of a hor-
rific shooting slump to take an
82-67 win over the Pensacola
Pirates at home.-The Indians
move. to 2-4 in Panhandle
Conference play.
"We finally made shots,"
Headrick said. "I think we started
to learn the difference between a
good shot and a bad shot, and
that's all a part of winning. We
were shooting 34 percent in con-
ference play coming in, and you
can't win like that. (On
Saturday), I think the guys took
some pride in it and it showed."
Chipola was dominant in the
first half, leading by as much as
22 points and taking a 42-24 lead
into the break.
The Indians shot 51 percent
from the field in the half, includ-
ing 36 percent from the 3-point
Chipola continued to dominate

corer triple by Rodderick Lanon
making it 51-29 with 17:32 to
A basket by Dexter Ellington,
two free throws by Fitzgerald,
and another free throw by Kevin
Powell gave the Indians their
largest lead of the game at 58-32
with 11:57 remaining.
The Pirates were able to close
the. gap to 72-58 with 2:30 to
play, but Sam Grooms responded
with six straight points to push
the lead back to 20.
Grooms had 20 points on 8-of-
11 shooting in 26 minutes off the
Keith DeWitt added 16 points
and 12 rebounds for Chipola, in
spite of foul trouble in both
Powell and Fitzgerald each
scored 12 points for the Indians,
Swho can, for the moment, breath
a bit easier.
"It had been three weeks since
we had a win, but it felt like three
years," Headrick said. "We talked
with the guys about respect being
earned, not given. I thought the
guys came out and played like
they wanted the respect of not
only this community but also the
Panhandle Conference."

.rebounded PJC 47-39, the tirst
time Chipola has won the
rebounding battle in conference
play this season.
As impressive as the Chipola
effort was all night, it was equal-
ly disastrous for thfe Pirates, who
fell to 2-5 in league competition
and 12-12 overall.
PJC shot just 28 percent from
the field for the game, including
9-of-31 from the 3-point line, and
missed 10 free throws.
Shawntez Patterson and
Derrious Gilmore led the Pirates
with 12 points, and. Quintel
Maxwell added 11.-
However, .the trio combined to
make only 10 of 35 shots.
Despite the win, the Indians
still find themselves three games
out of second place for the final
Panhandle Conference state tour-
nament bid, due to Tallahassee
upsetting Northwest Florida State
Saturday night.
The win put the Eagles in sole
possession of first place at 6-1,
with"the Raiders falling to 5-1.
But the Indians can make up
,ground in the coming week with
a road game against Northwest
on Wednesday, and. a home game
Saturday against TCC.

Lady Indians finally get a win

It took a while longer than expected, but the
Chipola Lady Indians finally got a Panhandle
Conference victory Saturday night at home.
The Lady Indians, winless in their first five
forays in league play, defeated the Pensacola
Lady Pirates 71-64, thanks to a hot start and
big performances from Bianca Jarrett and
Jarrett and Carr combined for 43 points and
six 3-pointers on the night, as the Lady
Indians jumped out,to a 29-10 lead in the first
,half and held on late for the win.
Chipola coach David Lane said he was
relieved to see his team finally get over the
hump in conference action.
"What we've been telling the kids all along
is that when you have an opportunity to win
(in conference), you have to do it," the coach
said. "They weren't shooting well early on,
and we were making shots. That's the differ-
ence. We got a big lead and held on. We made
good decisions and did the things you have to
do to win.
"Bianca played really well, and Lindsey
Carr shot the ball really well for us.".
Jarrett's 24 points led all scorers, with Carr
adding 19 on 8-of-15 shooting.
Chipola made 6-of-9 from the 3-point line

out the season strong.
"I guess we'll find out," the coach said.
"We've got to build off of this. Our goal is to
make the state tournament, so we have to make
sure we stay focused, play well against (NWF

turning point to the Lady Indians' season.
"I think it gives us the confidence that the
work we've put in will pay off," he said.
"These kids have stayed with it and stayed.

Graceville softball sees another big year ahead

After an impressive run to. the
1A regional finals in 2009; the
Graceville Lady Tigers look to
build on last season's success with
another big year in 2010.
The Lady Tigers finished 10-17
last season, but added a district
.title and two playoff wins before
falling to eventual state champion
Eagle's View in the regional finals
in Jacksonville.
Graceville has since lost some
key starters in Cayla Walker,
Stacey Sadler, Paige McClendon
and Jessica Baxley.
However, the Lady Tigers and
coach Joshua Graham return a tal-
ented core of players, led by short-
stop Shaquel Johnson and pitcher
Liza Johnson.
Shaquel Johnson returns as
Graceville's leading hitter with a
.500 average last season, while
Liza Johnson starred in the circle,
pitching 67 1/3 innings with 49
But with five seniors departing,
and leading pitcher Meagan
Sanders transferring to Chipley,
Graham said he knows his team
will have some ground to make up.
"We've got some holes to fill,
but it's do-able," the coach said.
"This is kind of a newer team, a

younger team. There are not as
many seniors as last year, but that
gives us room to build. It will be a
learning curve because we lost five
strong seniors who brought a lot of
leadership and stability to the line-
Graceville will also return start-
ing centerfielder Brittany
Flournoy, who had a strong 2009
with a .459 average and 26 runs
Jessica McClendon will give the
Lady Tigers another outfielder.
Tiara Sorey is set to join the team
as a utility player.
McClendon, .Flournoy and
Sorey are all basketball players for
the Lady Tigers, meaning Graham
will have to wait a little while
longer before he gets them back
100 percent of the time.
"We're going to have some
rough spots early on since girls'
basketball is still going on,"
Graham said.
He has 10 players who will
make up his varsity and junior var-
sity teams currently playing bas-
ketball or cheering for basketball.
"It puts a damper on getting
ready for the season, but they've
been trying to come out as much
as they can to get in the swing of
things," he said.
Graceville gets a pair of trans-
fers this season in former

Cottondale catcher Taylor
McDaniel and former Marianna
outfielder Kendal Asbury.
"We're excited about having
(McDaniel) as an addition to the
squad," Graham said. "Kendal
Asbury has got really good speed
on the basepaths, so she's going to
help us as well."
Former'junior varsity pitcher
Meagan Sadler will be called.upon
to pitch this season, as will fresh-
man Caitlin Miller.
There will be a new group of
regulars for the Lady Tigers, but

Graham said his team will need its
most reliable veterans in Liza and
Shaquel Johnson to have big years.
"Liza did really well for us last
year, but she could take more time
off because of Meagan," Graham
said. "She's have a little
bit more responsibility on her
shoulders this season.
"Shaquel has been such a leader
on this team for as long as I've
been coaching here. I'm really
going to hate to see her leave after
this year, but she's going to be very
successful at the next level. She's

an outstanding defensive player
and offensive player, so I'm hop-
ing she can pick up right where she
left off last season."
The senior shortstop's skills will
perhaps be needed most in the
field, where Graham said his team
would need to be especially
"With the loss of a dominant
pitcher like Meagan, we have to
step up our defensive efforts," the
coach said. "We're going to have
to make sure the defense is just as
strong, if not stronger than in the
Making things more difficult for
the Lady Tigers is a step up in clas-
sification to 2A, and an expanded
district of eight teams.
But Graham said he hoped that
last season's postseason run will
serve this team well in the new
"It was very big for us to make it
as far as we did in the playoffs. and
it's exciting to see what we can do
from here on," the coach said.
"We're going into a new district,
but we just have to have a team-
first mentality and go in with the
attitude that we're just as good as
any of these teams, and we have
something to prove."
Graceville will open the season
against Arnold in Panama City on
Feb. 12.
