Arts group opens with dulcimer concert

The Chipola Regional Arts Association
opened its new year with a mini-concert from
the Chipola Dulcimer Players on Tuesday at
the organization's first meeting of 2010.
The seven musicians, from Jackson,
Washington and Calhoun counties, also invit-
ed the CRAA membership to join in for a
sing-along as they played an old favorite,
"You Are My Sunshine."
Floyd Cook of Washington County acted as
spokesman for the band. Between tunes, he
peppered the 20-minute performance with

facts about the instrument.
According to him, the first known refer-
ence to the dulcimer family of instruments is
believed to have been made in the Bible, in
the book of Daniel.
The dulcimer is generally associated in
modem times with the Appalachian region of
the United States, as the backdrop to the
haunting, "high lonesome" quality of its

the region. Dulcimers come in various shapes
and can be made from almost any kind of

to each fret, which correspond to the
numbers in music written especially
for the dulcimer. In basic technique,
the dulcimer ,is played by pressing r
down on the first two strings at the
appropriate fret while strumming all
the strings near the sound holes.
Songs are often jotted down and
shared, and players familiar with the
sound of a. given song can usually t
easily follow the number pattern.
Dulcimer players are famously, given
to freely sharing their information .
with others who want to give it a try, -:
so songs are also easy to come by.
Cook said he's taught players from
age seven to 70.
It may be the perfect instrument for

to the complaint.
Thompson, who lives in
Marianna, was advised of
her rights and declined to

transported to the county
jail, but later bonded out to
await further court action.
Thompson was hired by
DOC in September 2005

she was first employed by
the department. Her salary
was $30,807 and she
worked the day shift.
DOC spokesperson Gretl
Plessinger said Tuesday that
Thompson has been fired,
and an investigation into the
sex-related allegation is
continuing. Although DOC
has been unable to contact
Thompson,. the department
has sent her a letter of
"extraordinary dismissal"
- meaning, Plessinger

said, that the circumstances
are so "egregious" that nor-
mal channels of dismissal
can be bypassed for an
immediate firing.
According to Plessinger,
the firing came as the result
of the allegation that
Thompson "expressed a
willingness to engage in an

inappropriate relationship
with the inmate of a sexual
nature" in exchange for
The investigation will
likely explore whether
Thompson actually had a
sexual 'encounter -with the
inmate in the past,
Plessinger said.
