4 charged in bank robbery Alleged

BY ASHLEY McKEEN -.- %] . burglar
FL.oIRIDAN STAFF WRITER FA R

Four Greenwood men have been charged in
connection with the armed robbery
Wednesday afternoon at the Greenwood
branch of PeoplesSouth Bank, located on the
corner of State Road 71 and U.S. Highway
69.
The alleged robber, identified as Larry
Jerome Williams, 46, was still in the hospital
receiving treatment for his gunshot wound, as
of late Thursday afternoon.
According to a press release from the
Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the robber
was spotted by a deputy responding to the
robbery call. The robber was running from
the bank, heading south along State Road 71
with a handgun and bag containing an undis-
closed amount of currency.
The deputy pursued the suspect in his
patrol vehicle until the suspect ran behind a
residence and jumped a fence. The.deputy
then continued to pursue the suspect on foot.
According to the release, the suspect then
immediately "displayed the firearm in a
threatening manner" and refused to comply
with the deputy's order to put the weapon
down. The deputy then fired his weapon,
striking the robber in the upper and middle
portion of his body.
The release states that the suspect then con-
tinued to avoid capture, but was eventually
disarmed.and taken into custody.
Both.the handgun and the money taken
from the bank were recovered.

Maurice O'Hara Christopher
Wilson Danielle Williams

Major Donnie Branch of the Jackson
County Sheriff's Office stated in a phone
interview Thursday that the other individuals
suspected of involvement in Wednesday's
robbery were also arrested Wednesday night.
The three other individuals - Maurice
O'Hara Wilson, 20;. Christopher Danielle
Williams, 23; and Edric Brandon Smith, 25
- were located by authorities off Calhoun
Road.
The silver passenger vehicle that was spot-
ted Wednesday at the scene of the crime was
eventually found by the authorities. The three
suspects were then brought in for question-
ing, Branch said.
Branch added that interviews gathered
enough information for investigators to con-
nect the three men to the robbery. They were
then arrested and charged as principles to a
.first-degree armed robbery.
Branch alleged Larry Jerome Williams was
the only individual to actually enter the bank.

Edric Brandon
Smith

The other individuals' involvement is still
being investigated. According to Branch,
Wilson and Christopher Williams claim to be
brothers, and live only seven miles from the
bank, off Hartsfield Road.
The other suspect, Smith, lives off Blue
Springs Road nearly nine miles away.
According to the release, various state and
local law enforcement agencies responded
and assisted during the bank robbery investi-
gation, including the Marianna, Cottondale
and Sneads police departments, Florida
Department of Law Enforcement, the State
Attorney's Office, Florida Department of
Transportation Law Enforcement Division,
Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Fish and
Wildlife Commission, and canine teams from
Appalachee and Jackson Correctional institu-
tions.
The release also stated that FDLE is inves-
tigating the circumstances in which the offi-
cer shot the suspect. '

Graceville's DOVE Vocational Academy, a
moderate-risk residential program for girls,
plans to expand the facility to incorporate a
new program. The new program will not only
house 32 new girls, but will also open up 32
new jobs, according to Graceville City
Manager Eugene Adams.
The new program is focused on intensive
mental, health treatment for girls in need
between the ages of 15 to 18, according to
DOVE Academy's Assistant Director Jessica
Warnick.
The new program has yet to be named,
according to Warnick, but beginning stages
are set to commence Jan. 20 when the con-
tract is signed and funding is put in place.
Development of a new residential facility
to house the incoming girls is set to begin
later this month. The facility will have 32 new
beds and other common areas for the girls on
the same institutional grounds as DOVE.
According to Warnick, some of the facilities
will also be shared between the new program
and DOVE, such as the educational facility.
In order to fund the development of the new
residential facility, Graceville applied for
state funding, with the assistance of Jackson
County.
Both Graceville and Jackson County
entered an interlocal agreement Tuesday to
clarify the responsibilities of each local gov-
ernment, in conjunction with both the grant
applications and the development of the new
facility.
According to the agreement, Graceville
will use state funding to undertake sanitary
sewer system and wastewater plant improve-
ments in the unincorporated areas around the
city, as well as within the Graceville city lim-

Warmer temps, but heavy rain expected

STAFF REPORT
There's good news and bad8
on the weather front this week-8
end.
A break in the frigid weather
is on the horizon, but heavy rain
is also in the forecast.
Jackson County Emergency
Management Director Rodney2
Andreasen said three to four
inches of rain could fall in a
downpour that's expected to
commence around 7 p.m.
Saturday.
The rain will likely continue
throughout the night as a low
Pressure system moves through
the area.
Severe storms are not expect-
ed, Andreasen said, because the
extended stretch of cold weath-

Master Gardener training course closed for

Sr'i I, 10 IIo i Fi OI)ID"AN

The University of Florida
Institute of Food and Agricultural
Sciences and the Jackson and
Gadsden County Extension
offices are teaming-up again to
provide a comprehensive, over
60-hour training program for
those interested in becoming a
Master Gardener.
In 1972. an Extension Service
agent in Washington State rea-
soned that well-trained volunteers

could respond to many of the
everyday homeowner questions,
freeing him and his colleagues for
more difficult problems. The
agent selected, trained and certi-
fied volunteers as Master
Gardeners. They not only met his
objectives, but they exceeded
them. And so, the Master
Gardener program began.
The Master Gardener program
is now active in more than 45
states. Florida's began in 1979.
The state program is now in more

than 40 Florida counties. The
Master Gardener Program in
Florida is sponsored by the
University of Florida's IFAS and
cooperating county governments.
This year, the Gadsden and
Jackson county training program
will be Wednesdays, from 8 a.m.
to 3 p.m., starting Feb. 10 and run-
ning until April 7, with one
Saturday class March 13.
The cost of the program is
$150, which includes course
material. An optional, three-vol-

ume set of the Florida Master
Gardener Manual is available for
an additional $85. After graduat-
ing, new Master Gardeners will be
expected to volunteer a minimum
of 75 hours the first year, and 50
hours in the years following.
For more information or an
application, please call the
Jackson County Extension
Service at 482-9620 or stop by
2741 Pennsylvania Ave., Suite 3
in Marianna.. Registration dead-
line is Friday, Feb. 5.

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN

The 14th Circuit Guardian ad Litem pro-
gram is in search of individuals willing to
make a difference by becoming a strong,
dependable, court-appointed voice for abused
and neglected children who need a voice in
court.
A guardian ad litem is appointed by the
court to protect the rights and advocate the
best interest of a child involved in a court pro-
ceeding. Most of these children have been
removed from their homes because of alleged
abuse, abandonment or neglect.
The GAL becomes familiar with the child's
case and makes independent recommendations
to the court to help ensure a safe, caring, sta-
ble and permanent environment. GAL are

individuals who respect a child's inherent right
to grow up with dignity in a safe environment.
GALs carry out an objective, systematic
examination of the situation including relevant
history, environment, relationship, and needs
of the child. The GAL interviews family,
friends, neighbors, and members of the child's
school.
They also identify resources and services for
the child and facilitate a collaborative relation-
ship between all parties involved in the case,
helping to create a situation in which the
child's needs are met.
GALs convey the best interests of the child
to the court and relevant agencies, and they
keep track of whether the orders of the court,'
as well as the plans of the Department of
Children and Families, are carried out.

A GAL must successfully complete 30
hours of certification training and six hours
annually of recertification training. An aver-
age of one to two hours per week is spent
working on the assigned case.
In Bay, Washington, Calhoun, Gulf, Jackson
and Holmes counties, more that 230 volun-
teers speak and advocate for abused and neg-
lected children as GAL. Offices and training
are located in four counties.
There are currently 44 kids without volun-
teer advocate representation in Jackson
County. The 14th Circuit Guardian Ad Litem
Program wants these children spoken for.
Those interested in serving as a volunteer
advocate with the 14th Circuit Guardian ad
Litem Program are asked to call the Marianna
office at 482-9127.

Pensacola stuns Chipola

with 75-70 home win
BY DUSTINKENT
FLORIDAN S .l i c.r.-., . ,, .. .
The No. 4 Chipola Indiahs were beaten Wednesday
by a Panhandle Conference team for the first time in
nearly two years.
The Pensacola Pirates upset the Indians 75-70 in.
Pensacola, breaking Chipola's 20-game, winning streak
against Panhandle Confereice foes.
The last time the Indians lost a conference game was
to Northwest Florida State on Fcb' 2. 20(S in Niceville.
Shawntez Patterson and Dorian Smith each scored 17
points to lead the Pirate5, how 1-2'in-league play and
11-9 overall. ..
PJC led 38-36 at halftime, but the Indians moved in
front by four midway through the second half.
But the Pirates kept charging back. and the Indians
found themselves trailing bh\ tio with 18 seconds
remaining and poses.ion of the ball.
However, the Indians (16-2, 1-1 in league play)
couldn't convert, and the Pirates made both free throws
at the other end to seal the % in. .. .
"We didnr' finish all 'night," Chipola coacb Jake'
Headrick said. "'We had 23 shots in the paint that we
nussed. We ju.; didn't execute and finish.
"I think that our guys didn'tcome out with the inten-
sity that we needed to have to win games on the road in
the Panhandle Conference."
Chipola was led by Dexter Ellington with 15 points,
with Marvin Fitzgerald adding ,13, and Delwan Graham
12.

The Chipola Lady Indians fell to 0-2 in
Panhandle Confefence play Wednesday
night with a 78-61 road loss to the Pensacola
Lady Pirates.
Chipola fell to 10-8 overall. PJC improved
to 18-1 and 3-0 in Panhandle pla.. 'I
Meghan Perkjns led Pensacola with 18
points.
Ty O'Neil and Bianca Jarrett each scored
19 points to lead the Lady Indians, but they
shot a combined 14-for-42 from the field for
the game.
PJC led by 14 points at halftime and by as
much as 28 in the second half.
Chipola stormed back with an 18-3 run to
cut the deficit to 13 with six minutes to play.
But a quick run by the Lady Pirates
pushed the lead back to 20, and they cruised
to the finish line for the win.
Chipola was done in by poor shooting for.
most of the game.
The Lady Indians converted just 25 per-
cent of their field goals in the first half, and
made only 6-of-12 free throws.
"We just didn't shoot the ball very well in
the first half," Chipola coach David Lane
said. "But having not played that well, I felt
like we were in pretty good shape, all things
considered.
"We were ableto get them out of their
pressure (defense) by drawing some fouls,
but they wore us down with it as the game
went on. We didn't attack it well, and that
hurt us quite a bit. Then we just couldn't
make baskets. They were shots we should
make, and that was the frustrating part."
Lane said he was especially bothered by
the letdown his team had after making the
big run with six minutes left to play.

to eliminate the mistakes and
errors that are killing us right
now."
-David Lane,
Chipola coach

"From a players' standpoint, we didn't
have that mentality of, 'Hey, we're back in
this thing, let's finish it out,'" the coach said.
"I just didn't feel like we were doing what
we needed to be doing.
"We did what we needed to get back in it,
but we didn't close the deal, and that was the
part that was frustrating."
With just seven players after the indefinite
suspension of freshman post player Darrlita
Taylor, Lane said his team can't afford to
have any letdowns against quality oppo-
nents.
"We just don't have a margin for error that
is very big right now," the coach said.
"When you miss free throws and easy
opportunities, and you don't finish defen-
sive possessions with box-outs, that's what
causes-you to get beat.
"If we're going to win,,we have eliminate
the mistakes and errors that are killing us
right now."
Chipola next plays host to Northwest
Florida State (13-2, 0-2), the only other win-
less team in Panhandle play.

Bulldogs beat Franklin for second straight win

BY SHELIA MADER
FLORIDAN CORRESPONDENT
The Marianna High School
Bulldogs soccer team made it
two in a row Tuesday night with'
a 1-0 victory over Franklin
County High School.
The long trip .with below
freezing temperatures appeared
to have no effe& on the players,
as they took the field with deter-
mination to pick up another win
on the season.
Although the Bulldogs were
missing two key starters,
Marianna coach Garyn Waller
had no problems going to his
bench with positive results.
In net was veteran goalie Nick
Harris, with defenders Sammy
Muniz, Michael Mader, James
Morrison and Curt Stephens
covering in front of him.
Add to those Preston Skipper,
Ryan Rudd, Paul Gochenaur
Stevie Blanchette, Thomas
Parrish and John English, and
the Bulldogs appeared solid on
both ends of the field.
In the first half of play, the
Bulldogs kept control of the ball

for the majority of the 40 min-
utes of play, but- they were
unable to capitalize with a goal.
Missed opportunities seemed
to plague MHS when trying to
find the back of the net.

FollowingtIhe hialftime break,
less than a minute was off the
clock before Stevie Blanchette
played a ball to pave the way for
Preston Skipper to notch the
only goal in on the night.
The Bulldogs' defense, cap-
tained by Harris in goal, success-
fully defended 14 shot attempts
by Franklin County on the night.
The Lady Bulldogs were not
as fortunate, falling 6-0 to the
Lady Seahawks.
Marianna goalies Kara

night.
The Bulldogs were scheduled
to close out the regular season on
the road Thursday night at

Indians
Continued From Page IB

The Indians had trouble
putting enough distance
between themselves and
the Pirates in the second
half. Headrick said the
problem was at the defen-
sive end.
"It was a matter of our
guys having to come up
with a big stop and we
could never get one we
needed," the coach said.
"We let them hang around,
and they kept. making big
shots, which is a credit to
them."
Finishing strong was also
an issue in the Indians' con-
ference-opening win over
Gulf Coast on Jan. 9.
Chipola surrendered a 14-
point second-half lead
before holding on for a 71-
69 victory.
"I just think it's all
focus," Headrick said of his
team's late-game struggles.
"I hope this loss has our
team focused on how seri-
ous this league is, how
every night, no matter who
you're playing, whether it's
at home or on the road, it's
going to be a war.
"You can't let teams
hang around and let it come
down to a last-second
shot."
With a brand-new team,
Headrick said his players
have to get adjusted to the
consistent energy level
required to excel in the
Panhandle Conference.
"The thing for us is
we've got to realize the
effort and intensity for us
has to be at an all-time high
every night," the coach
said. "Now, we have no
room for error. It's just one
loss, but the guys have to
learn from it. We can't
afford to have any slip-ups,
so we have to be ready to
play every night."
The Indians next play
host to first-place
Northwest Florida State,
which comes into the game
ranked No. 7 in the country
and No. 1 in the state.
The Raiders are 2-0 in
Panhandle play and 17-1
overall.
"This game is always a

war," Headrick said of the
rivalry between the Indians
and Raiders. "I expect our
guys to be ready. It's a short
turnaround, so we've got to
get ready mentally in the
next two days."
Bruce Stewart returns for
his 13th season as the
Northwest coach, and
boasts yet another talented
roster led by 6-foot, 3-inch
point guard Brian Bryant.
The sophomore
Mississippi State commit is
averaging nearly 20 points
per game, along with five
assists and seven rebounds.
"I think he's the most
valuable player to his team
in the country," Headrick
said of Bryant. "He really
scores and rebounds for his
size, and he's a big guard.
He's as good of a point
guard as we've had in the
league since I've been
here."
But the mission to beat
the Raiders remains the
same as in most years:
match the defensive inten-
sity and try to keep them
from dominating on the
glass.
"Coach Stewart does a
great job of having his team
prepared every night, so
our guys will have to be
more focused and ready to
play," Headrick said.
"Our biggest challenge
will be rebounding. We
struggled against Gulf
Coast and again (against
PJC). That was the reason
we lost. (The Raiders) are
really physical and crash
the boards. To win
Panhandle Conference'
games, we have to start
rebounding the basketball
better."
The game tips at 7:30
p.m.
After Saturday night's
game, the Indians will
return to action on Tuesday
night when they play host
to the Tallahassee Eagles at
7:30 p.m. in the Milton H.
Johnson Health Center.
Chipola will then get
eight days off before
returning to the court on
Jan. 27 at Gulf Coast.

they could very easily be 2-
0," Lane said. "They're a
pretty dangerous team."
With only three teams to
make it to the state tourna-
ment from the Panhandle
Conference, Saturday's
game becomes nearly a
must-win for both Chipola
and Northwest, which trails
TCC by a half-game for
third place in the standings.
It won't be easy against a
Lady Raiders team whose
roster looks little like a typ-
ical last-place team.
"They've got some pretty
talented players, some very
good guards," Lane said.
"They have some explo-
siveness."
Former Gulf Coast star
Shamar Harris, who won
the conference player of the
year as a freshman two sea-
sons ago, now leads the
Lady Raiders with 17 points
per game.
Sophomore Josette
Campbell (15.9 points per
game) joins Harris to form a
potent perimeter combina-
tion.
But a win on Saturday is
nearly a must for Chipola,
with home victories at a
premium in conference
play.
"We've got an opportuni-
ty to defend our homecourt
and we need to do it," Lane
said. "We didn't do it
against Gulf Coast, so
we've got to go out there
and play well, and hope we
steal one (against TCC) on
Tuesday.
"We're basically in a bat-
tle for third right now, so
we've got to stay close to
TCC."
The game tips off at 5:30
p.m.
