TUESDAY

Post-holiday sales are brisk

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Local merchants say post-Christmas
shopping is brisk as people hunt down
good deals on seasonal merchandise.
.At the .Walmart Supercenter in
Marianna, where toys, Christmas decora-
tions, and cosmetic gift sets are going for
half off, store manager Mickey Gilmore
s. .aid product is flying off the shelves.
He also said many people are coming in
to spend the gift cards they got. for
Christmas.-
Gilmore has several registers set up for
after-holiday returns, or exchanges, but
said those lines aren't terribly long. He
and other retail leaders say the exchange,
line moves much more smoothly if the'
people returning items have receipts in
hand.
."Receipts always help, and most of the
returns will be done in gift cards that you
can use to buy 'merchandise or gas. If you
bought something yourself and you know
-which register you went out of, that infor-
mation can also help speed up the track-
ing." Gilmore said. "The main thing is to
be patient, although things are moving
along pretty well, and to try to get things
back within the next week or so."'
After that, operations go back to normal
and things aren't really set up for the heav-
ier return volume.
Waco Drugs and Gifts owner Nancy
Wells also said her after-Christmas sales
are going very well.
"People were out shopping Saturday,
that was good," Wells said. "We start with

50 percent off certain merchandise, sea- ,increase a. little each week through
sonal things, and then the discounts will January. It looks like we're following the

national trend; reports are that things are
better this year than last across the coun-
try. We're thankful and pleased that it's
true for us, as well, based on what we've
seen so far.".
At the Family Dollar Store in Marianna,
Tina Perkins hustled over to answer the
phone on a busy Monday, slightly out of
breath when she .said hello and confirmed
that seasonal merchandise. Was indeed
moving quickly off the shelves after a very
good pre-holiday sales pattern.

Artist donates drawing

BY ASHLEY McKEEN
- FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER

Marianna artist Donald
Sullivan donated a hand-drawn
portrait to Signature
HealthCare at the Courtyard.
Monday in order to hohor the
staff of the local health care-
facility for their dedication to
residents.
Sullivan presented Signature
HeathCare Administrator
Annette Jansenius with a pen-
cil-drawn portrait of the facility
as a token of his family's appre-
* ciation.
Sullivan noted at Monday's
,ceremony that without the
devotion of staff members, his.
mother Leona Sullivan would
not be walking again.
S.Sullivan . explained at
Monday's ceremony that his
mother had undergone a very
..-interise. surgery recently that
replaced a majority of her right
leg with metal.
He added that after only a
month of rehabilitation servic-
es, the Signature HealthCare
staff.helped his mother. Leona
to walk again.
"Doctors told us around
Thanksgiving time my mother
would never walk, again, and
after a month working with the
staff here she took 109 steps,"
Sullivan said. "On behalf of the
Sullivan family, I would like to
dedicate this portrait, to the
Signature HealthCare staff for
all of you have done for
Mother," he continued. "She is
. a very important person in our
lives and I would like to thank
you."
According to Jansenius, the
art piece is going to be hung in

Have a happy new

year - here's how

BY DEBORAH BUCKIHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITE
Christmas is over, but for some
people the family stresses associ-
ated with the holiday season
linger as New Year's Eve
approaches.
With so many brothers, sisters,
aunts, uncles, parents and grand-
parents gathering, old conflicts
can rise to, the surface anew.
Childhood sibling rivalry, for
instance, can be resurrected in
adulthood.
Because time and distance
alone may not have fixed those
troubles, the dining room can
quickly turn into a battlefield
where hurtful words are launched
across the table.
Additional, internal, conflicts
can add to the stress,
Perhaps there are new or
enhanced financial worries for
sonie who overspent in the last
few weeks "and now must think
about the consequences.
Chances are, the people who
put the family dinners together
are struggling with exhaustion,
too, and nerves may be on edge
all around.
Add alcohol and fireworks to
the mix, and danger becomes a
real possibility.
Some people are dealing with
fresh grief during this holiday
season as they spend their first
New Year's Day without a spouse
or other loved one who died in
2009. The sorrow may seem
insurmountable.
Rachel Rackard, a mental
health . counselor with Live
Management Center, also serves
as the organization's component
director foi emergency services
in Jackson and two other area
counties. She says help is a phone

call away for those who need a
listening ear or other help before
the situation boils over.
"We've got screeners on duty
24 hours. a day at 482-5558," she
said. "If.you need law enforce-
ment, those kinds of emergency
services, call 911, but we're here
to help people deal with some of
the stressors they're dealing with,
or to put them in touch with the
services they need."
I And there are some important
things that individuals should do
well ahead of the
gatherings,some pre-emptive
measures that can head off prob-
lems.
Make a pact to steer clear of
potential arguments over old
issues. "Agree .to disagree" and
leave it at that before the guests
start arriving, she says.
Everyone should also carve out
a few minutes of down time,
short respites from the together-
ness so that they can keep their
inner peace in spite of the stress.
The 'worker bees' in the fami-
'ly should also learn to delegate
some responsibilities in order to
give their minds and bodies a
break from all the preparation.
The main thing, Rackard said,
is to be realistic in spending, in
expectations, and in planning.
Set and stick to a budget, no
matter what others think you
should be spending. Don't try to
compete.
Recognize ahead of time the
potential triggers for, problems
and manage gatherings with the
goal of avoiding those as much as
possible.
Keep alcohol consumption in
check, and make sure an ade-
quate number of designated driv-

effort enters its second

The search zone was
expanded last Wednesday
to an area roughly 10 miles
downstream from the dam,
according to Kirkland.
The hunt for Slappey
was early on characterized
as a recovery effort. The
high water, cold tempera-

tures and other factors
made it clear, that the
chances of his survival
were extremely low.

Jackson County native publishes first book

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
"What would the original
St. Nicholas think, if he saw,
what Americans have done
with his image and his reputa-
tion?"
That's the question that ran
through the, mind of Jackson
County native Karla Miller
Johnson one Christmas sea-
son, as she listened to a news
report of a mall trampling at a
Christmas sale.
"That's when the story for
'St. Nicholas's Secret' began
formulating in my mind,"
Johnson said. "Four years
later, my dream of publishing
a children's book with a real
message is becoming a reali-
ty."
Published by Higher Life
Development services, the
first book in Johnson's series,,
"Tales of the Tick-Tock Time
Traveler," was released just in
time for Christmas. According
to the author's press release,

the travel
story follows
Stephen
Treadwell on
No 'his adventure
from New
York City to
ancient Myra
Karla Miller circa 300
Johnson A.D., where
he has a life-
changing encounter with the
Bishop of Myra, the man we
now know as St. Nicholas, or
Santa Claus.
"I believe this is the kind of
book that will make adults and
children find the focus of what
Christmas should be,"
Johnson said. Johnson grew
up in Cottondale, so she says
she understands the values of
people in the tri-state area.
"Even though I've lived in
Troy (Ala.) since I left for col-
lege, Cottondale is still home.
We still love to come back and
see all the friends I knew
there," Johnson said

The presents all pretty under the tree are now all wet and really soggy.
Mamma threw her kerchief and knocked off my cap, "You should have called the plumber

Christmas was rough arid not even snowy, instead of St. Nick, we had to get Plumber Joey.

1, Object of the game is to amass as many of the 136 weekly points as you can. Simply review the week's schedule of
games listed on entry form, and decide which game you are SUREST of picking a winner in. Write the name of your
projected winner on the 16-point line, and so on down to the 1-point line, which game you figure to be a toss- up, Next,
fill in Tiebreaker'1, the total points scored by both teams in the week's designated game. If this step fails to produce a
winner, the judges will apply Tiebreaker 2, total offensive yardage from scrimmage in this game. If a winner still doesn't
emerge, a drawing will be held among those contestants still tied. Decisions of the judges are final. The weekly contes-
tant from among all participating newspapers who tallies the most of the 136 points will win $1000. Local prizes to be
decided, by newspapers.
2. Any entry form that does not contain a legible name, address, etc.. will be disqualified.
3. Entries that fail to forecast a winner from each and every game will be disqualified, as will entries that fail to distin-
guish between the Jets and Giants of New York and other similar sounding team names games.
4. No points are awarded on tie games or in case any game is not played for any reason during its scheduled week.
5. Entering POWER POINTS constitutes permission by contestant for his or her name and photograph to be used for
news and reasonable promotional purposes at'no charge.
6. Employees of this newspaper and their immediate families are ineligible to participate.
7. Any inquiry about or protest of weekly results must be made by noon on the Friday following the announcement of
winners.

9. Weekly deadline for entry will be 2 p.m. Thursday except when noted otherwise on weekly entry form.
10. Neither this newspaper nor any co-sponsor will be responsible for illegible entry forms or those lost, stolen or dam-
aged In any way.

Chapman aims for starting line-up

BY SHELIA MADER
FLORIDAN CORRESPONDENT
Former Marianna High School sports standout Stephen
Chapman is hoping 2010 is his year in professional base-
ball.
Chapman, a 2005 graduate of Marianna High School,
committed to Auburn his senior year but opted out of that
commitment after he was taken in the sixth round of the
MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers organization.
Chapman was sure to advance his career after four stel-
lar years at Marianna, anchoring down center field with
an occasional stint at first base defensively and leading
the team offensively at the plate.
Following graduation, Chapman reported to the Cactus
Rookie League in Arizona where he finished the season.
In 2005 he was moved to the Pioneer league in Helene,
Montana.
In tile advanced rookie league, Chapman split time
between center field and right field. Chapman returned to
Helene at the start of the 2006 season but moved to A ball
in Charleston, West Virginia with the "Power."
Chapman's best year thus far came in 2007 with the
Power in Charleston.
That season, Chapman broke a franchise record of 20
- home runs that had stood for over twenty years when he
went long 24 times. Add to the 24 home runs his 90
' ,RBI's and a .262 batting average.
S -.. Chapman was rewarded for his record-setting season in
2008 when he was sent to the Manatees in Brevard

County, Florida.
Chapman battled injuries, though. He was, out for part
of the season before returning only to be sidelined for rest
of the year with an injury.
In 2009, the Cincinnati Reds picked up the remaining
two years of his seven-year contract.
Chapman reported to the Carolina Mud Cats in
Raleigh, North Carolina. There he spent' the year in right
field with some time at first base and played a key role as"
a pinch hitter. Through the half season he was with the.
Mud Cats he belted five home runs.
During the off-season, Chapman takes advantage of a
clause in his original contract by attending college.
"When I decided not to go to Auburn and head straight to
the majors, I knew I'd need a college education one day
so I had that added to -my contract. My education is paid
for no matter how my baseball career ends up," Chapman
said..
As far as what he expects out of this year, Chapman is
cautiously optimistic.
, "Realistically I'll probably go back to North Carolina
this year since I only had a half season there. I've had
three really good seasons but the last two years the
injuries have made it not too much. I've been going out
there worried about hitting and now I've just got to see the
ball and hit the ball and hopefully I'll earn a starting spot."
Chapman's injury was a hip flexor and he said it just
wouldn't go away, leaving him off the field forthe
remainder of the 2008. Chapman underwent an MRI last
week with negative results.
