Retailers prepare for shoppers Christmas

With Black Friday here and the
madness setting in, customers
nationwide are preparing their
battle armor. Yet this year, local
retailers seem to have outsmarted
the overly, aggressive shopper
and assure customers no swords
or shields will be necessary.
Marianna retail giants Wal-
Mart, Lowes and GameStop are
switching things up this year to
help avoid congestion within the
store during sale hours, and elim-
inate past years' brawls.
This year, Wal-Mart employees
are taking a more organized
approach, instead of the former
last man standing routine,
Officials of Wal-Mart
announced new procedures,
beginning this year, for Black
Friday big-ticket sales. For each
of the major sale items, there will
be a corresponding line where
customers can pick up a ticket
redeemable for the desired item
at the register.
Many of these items are in lim-
ited supply and stores will only
have a certain number of tickets
to hand out.
Shoppers will be directed to
the line for the item they wish to
purchase; Wal-Mart employees
will hand out the tickets.
The new system differs from
previous years by now handing
out the tickets in specified, line as
opposed to in the departments
where the items are normally
Jackson County's only retail
gaming store, GameStop, will be
trying a system similar to Wal-
Mart's for the first time this year.

Main Street Marianna has out-
lined all the festivities planned
for this year's Christmas
Winterfest and parade Dec. 5.
According to a news release
from the organization, Market
and Garden streets will be closed
starting at noon to accommodate

A one-mile Jingle Fun
run/walk will begin at 4:45 p.m.,
starting at Guyton and Lafayette
streets. It will head east on
Lafayette and end on Madison
Street. Participants are urged to
wear Santa hats or jingle bells.
The parade will begin at 5 p.m.,
with Los Angeles Angels catcher
and Marianna native Jeff Mathis
serving as. the grand marshal.
Main Street Marianna will have
baseballs autographed by Mathis
on sale during the Winterfest.
A number of Marianna busi-
nesses have chipped in and there
will be snow again this year, as
The city's municipal depart-
'ment will also be selling tickets
for a chance to win a 40-inch flat
screen TV. Proceeds will go to
the Chipola River Greenway, and
the winner will be announced
before the parade.

once again be taking pictures

for how to keep the tree looking
and smelling its holiday best.
When purchasing a pre-cut
tree, pay attention to the manner
in which trees are stored and dis-
played. If they are stored under
shade and displayed standing in
water or misted at night, especial-
ly in warm weather areas, then
the lot operator is working hard
to keep the trees as fresh as pos-
One simple test for freshness is
to gently grasp a branch between
your thumb and forefinger and
pull it toward you. If the tree is
fresh, very few needles should
come off in your hand.

Make a fresh cut in the trunk
one-quarter to one-half inch from

operators will do this for you. Get
the trunk in water within three to
six hours.
The tree stand you use should
hold at least one quart of water
for every inch in diameter of the
trunk once the tree is in the stand.
Never add bleach, aspirin, fer-
tilizer or other things to the water
to make trees last longer.

Chipola students, faculty
attend, national conference

Students and faculty from
the Chipola College Teacher
Education Department
attended the National
Science Teachers
Association conference on
Nov. 12 in Ft. Lauderdale.
Professors Dr. Santine
Cuccio, Dr. David Hilton
and Allan Tidwell accompa-
nied students Mary Atwell,
Valetta Bledsoe, Angela
Henderson, . Stephanie
McIntosh, Deborah Miles
and Cassandra Witt.
The Chipola professors
made a presentation entitled,
"Chipola's Ground Water
Outreach Project (Curricular
Potential to Initiate
Researchable Questions)"
for attendees of the confer-
Students attended semi-
nars, workshops, and
exhibits that provided expe-
riences on implementing
science in K-12 school
classrooms. They were
introduced to hands-on-
minds-on learning strate-
gies, skills, and the newest
teaching technologies.
These were embedded in all
science disciplines and with-
in disciplines, such as cell
and molecular biology. The
students were given free
books, lesson plans, rock
kits, foldables, models,
videos, and CDs for use in
the classroom.
The overall purposes of
the trip to the NSTA were to
model to pre-service teach-
ers the importance of profes-
sional development and life-
long learning, which has
been a tradition at Chipola
College since the inception
of the baccalaureate pro-
grams in 2003. Dr. Cuccio
was pleased to introduce
Chipola student attendees to
another conference attendee,
Jessica Sloan, a graduate of
the Chipola Secondary
Science Education program
and currently a high school
science teacher in Mayo.
Because of her initial con-
ference experience while a
Chipola student, Jessica
continues to value the
opportunity to keep her sci-
ence education knowledge
and skills up to date.
"The purpose of this con-
ference is to improve teacher
retention through resources,
respect, renewal, leadership,
discovery, motivation, pas-
sion, expertise, growth and
connections," NSTA presi-
dent Pat Shane said.
"Our Chipola students
used the following words to
describe their experiences:
awesome, overwhelming,
essential, impressive,
informative, exciting, effec-
tive, engaging and helpful,"

BCF at the Florida

Baptist Convention

A caravan of students,
faculty and staff members
from The Baptist College
of Florida (BCF) in
Graceville trekked west
to attend the annual
Florida . Baptist, State
Convention (FBSC) meet-
ing Nov. 8-10, at Olive
Baptist Church in
Pensacola. Anticipation
was high'as the conven-
tion drew near because
BCF was on the conven-
tion program to provide
student workers, at the
registration table and lead
the praise and worship
time during the Tuesday

morning session.
Despite Tropical Storm
Ida, the FBSC's 146th'
annual meeting drew 895
registered messengers
from 419 churches, with
approximately 229 visi-
tors. This' year's theme,
"Imagine If...," launched
an exciting era in the life
of Florida baptists with
the establishment of an
approved Florida Great
Commission Task Force.
The FBSC comprised
many BCF highlights to
include the first official
appearance of the BCF'
Eagle mascot, 10 BCF
students welcomed and
registered' messengers to

the convention, First
Lady Ruth Ann Kinchen
was awarded the Clyde
Maguire Minister's Wife-
Award for Outstanding
Service at the Florida
Baptist Ministers' Wives
Luncheon, and then the
BCF Male Chorale, under
the direction of Don
Odom, lead worship dur-
ing the Tuesday morning
The chorale brought the
audience to their feet as
they finished their musi-
cal selections with song
favorite, "Midnight Cry,"
featuring soloist Jason
It was a heartwarming

moment in the life of the
college, as BCF First
Lady Ruth Ann Kinchen
was honored with the
Clyde Maguire Minister's
Wife Award. "I had the
privilege of meeting Ruth
Ann for the first time over
30 years ago," BCF
Marketing Director
Sandra Richards said.
"She was then, and con-
tinues to be, a very lov-

ing, kind, hard working,
and compassionate
woman of faith."
Nominated for her ser-
vants' heart and vibrant
reflection of God's love

Tigers win big,

prep for CHS

The Malone Tigers breezed to a 69-32
win over Northside Tuesday night at home
in the regular season opener.
Ty'Baker scored 16 points to lead the,
Tigers, while LaDarius McElroy added 11.
TJ Smith, Marcus Leonard, and Andre
.Rogers each added seven points.
Smith and McElroy each recorded seven
assists for the Tigers, who will get a step
up in competition tonight when they head
to Cottondale to take on the Hornets.
Malone coach Steven Welch said he
likes what his team has shown thus far,
having beaten Holmes County and Maclay
in the team's two preseason games before
Tuesday night's win.
"I'm real happy with what I've seen to
start the year," the coach said. "We've got
some defensive focus, we're locking in
and playing defense for 32 minutes.
"That's what we've been talking about
and it's good to see that these kids are buy-'
ing into it. I'm seeing signs of that
Welch said his team still had to prove it
could respond to adversity, but the Tigers
coach said he's not eager to see his team
facing such a situation.
"You always want to see what happens
after a loss, but I don't want it to happenr
just yet," he said.
The Tigers will need another good effort
tonight to top a hungry Hornets team com-
ing off of an opening night loss to the
Marianna Bulldogs on the road.
Cottondale .led Marianna Saturday
night, but a disastrous third quarter when
the Hornets were outscored 17-4 led to a

The Marianna High School junior varsity
Lady Bulldogs basketball team continued their
winning ways Tuesday night with a sound 31-
10 defeat of the Chipley Lady Tigers before a
large home crowd.
The two teams made a defensive stand in the
first period with Marianna edging out Chipley
4-3. Marianna's offense came alive in the sec-
ond quarter with 13 points, with their defense
holding the Lady Tigers to just two points.
At the half, it was MHS leading 17-5.
Following the halftime break, Marianna con-
tinued to'control the game, outscoring Chipley
7-4 to take a 24-5 lead into the final period.
Marianna's defense in the final quarter was
stifling as Chipley was held to just one point
with Marianna securing the 30-10 win.
Whitney Williams was the only Lady
Bulldog in double digits with 10 points, six of
those coming in the final period and four in the
second period.
Marianna will enjoy the Thanksgiving break
before they return on Monday to host the Bay
High Tornados.
Junior varsity tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
with varsity action to follow at 7 p.m.

The Hornets will try to bounce back in
their home debut, but Cottondale coach
Chris Obert said his team will have its
hands full;
"It vtill be a tough game, but I think
we'll be ready to play," he said. "It's
another rivalry game, and coach Welch
does a great job. Their kids play hard and
with a lot of confidence.
"It should be a very good atmosphere
for the game, and it will be a chance to see
two of the better guards in the area with
(Cottondale's Marcus Humose). and TJ."
Smith scored 41 points against Holmes
County. Obert said keeping the senior
Malone guard from exploding offensively
was key for his team.
"TJ is a very, very good player, but
hopefully we'll be able to slow him up
some," the coach said. "Last year, we did
a pretty good job on him at home. When
we went (to Malone), we were doing a
good job for a while, but he broke out in
the fourth. Hopefully, history won't repeat
itself." ."

Humose struggled with his perimeter
shot against Marianna, but the senior is
capable of carrying the Hornets' offense
on any given night.
"Humose is a great player, a great scor-

him, but he can really shoot the basket-
ball." .
Malone won both matchups with
Cottondale last season, taking the second
at home on a late basket by Smith.
However, Welch said that the Hornets
typically are a tough team to prepare for.
"They're just solid at everything they

do," the coach said of the Hornets.
