Teacher held on stalking charge

BY ASHLEY McKEEN
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Marianna resident and
adult education teacher
Kristen Sims was arrested
Saturday after a warrant
charging her with felony
criminal use of personal
identification and stalking
was issued.

According to state stat-
ues, criminal use of per-
sonal identification is the
unlawful use of some-
one's personal informa-
tion without his or her
authorization.
Sims said she got word
of the alleged warrant for
her arrest and reported to
the sheriff's office

Saturday. She was booked
at the county jail arid
given a conditional
release Saturday.
Major Donnie Branch
of the Jackson County
Sheriff's Office said the
warrant was issued by the
State Attorney's Office,
following an ongoing
sheriff's office investiga-

tion based on alleged
computer crimes.
Branch said the evi-
dence was presented to
the State Attorney's
Office, and as a result the
warrant was issued for
Sims.
Sims had no comment
regarding the case, other
than to say, "this is noth-

ing more than a retaliation
to a pending lawsuit
against (another) family."
Other details regarding
the case- and the arrest
have not yet been
released.
, Sim's was transferred to
adult education in August
of this year from
Marianna Middle School.

increases

roadway

patrols for

holiday traffic
STAFF REPORT
As Thaniksgiving travelers get
ready to take to the, road, the
Florida Highway Patrol will be
gearing, up to patrol the high vol-
ume traffic on Florida roads this
holiday season between Nov. 25
through 29.
Florida Highway Patrol's Lt.
Steve Preston said in a news
release that the Thanksgiving holi-
day is a peak travel period for fam-
ilies nationwide. In order to patrol
Florida's traffic-packed highways,
personnel including those typically
assigned to administrative, duties
will be deployed. Auxiliary and
Reserve troopers have also volun-
teered to augment the five-day
patrol period.
Troopers will 'direct' their
enforcement toward impaired driv-
ing, speeding, following too close-
ly and other aggressive driving
behavior. In addition, troopers will
strictly enforce safety belt and
child restraint laws, which now
authorize law enforcement officers
to stop motorists who fail to buck-
le up.
"The Florida Highway Patrol is
committed.. to making Florida's
highways safe,-and we plan to do
that by bolstering our forces to
reduce the number and severity of
crashes," FHP Director Col. John
Czemis said in a news release. "I
encourage motorists to do their
part by complying with all traffic
laws and making sure everyone in .
their vehicle is buckled up."
Preston offered some safety tips
for motorists on the' road this
week.
Plan the trip well, and leave in
plenty of time to get there without
rushing. Get plenty of rest before
embarking.
Be sure to observe and obey all
speed limits, and drive sober.
Eliminate all distractions, such as
texting or talking on the phone,
eating and even adjusting the
stereo. Also be sure to adequately
prepare the vehicle by checking
fluids and ensure the tires are in
good condition with the proper
amount of air pressure.

Adell Miles honored by WFEC

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
Employees, directors, family
and members at West Florida
Electric Cooperative gathered to
pay tribute to the late Adell
Miles, recognizing his 43 years
of service to WFEC by dedicat-
ing the Sneads district office
building in his honor.
Miles began working at WFEC
in 1947 and served in virtually
every department during his long
career, including as acting man-
ager of the cooperative on several
occasions.
He is credited with starting the
Sneads district office to better
serve the needs of cooperative
members in eastern Jackson
County - even working during
outages, and having his wife dis-
patch from their home before
construction on the facility was
complete. Miles then became the
Sneads district office manager,
serving in that capacity until his

retirement in January 1990.
After his retirement, Miles
continued to play an active role in
the community. He was a mem-
ber of the Lions Club, the
International Organization of
Military Police and the American
Legion Post 241, where he was
active in the funeral honor guard.
Miles was also a veteran of
World War II.
A dedication ceremony for the
Sneads district office was held
Nov. 19. A bronze plaque was
placed on the building's exterior
in Miles' memory.

Cooperative President'and
CEO William S. Rimes, left,

Bulldog soccer fizzles in tourney Ts

BY SHELIA MADER
FLORIDAN CORRESPONDENT

The Marianna High School boys soccer
team competed in junior varsity tournament
play this weekend in Panama City. Although
there were an' abundance of penalty cards, a
win wasn't in the cards for the young
Bulldogs.
With key players missing, the Bulldogs
were limited to just 14 players to compete in
three games in less than 24 hours. Marianna.
fell to Leon High School on Friday evening
8-1, before returning on Saturday to take a 7-
1 loss against Mosley and a 3-0 shut out
against Lincoln.
In Friday night's match, Coach Garyn
Waller started freshman J. T. Meadows in the
goal, with Brent Canada, James Morrison,
David White, Curt Stephens, Michael Mader,
Nipun Patel, Christian Vogel, Jesse
McGowan, Brandon Massengill, Dylan
Smith, Stevie Blanchette, Cody Barfield and
Jake Daniels rotating the 10 field positions.
At the half, the 'Dogs trailed 6-1, with the
lone score coming on a comer kick by Mader
to Vogel, who punched it in for the goal.
Made took over in the goal for the second
half, but the 'Dogs-could not muster a come-
back, falling 8-1.
In the first game Saturday, Marianna took
on Mosley High School. The day proved dis-
astrous for Marianna, with seven yellow cards
being issued against the Bulldogs. Absent
from the line up Saturday was Dylan Smith
but John English was suited up.
Mader got the start in the box, but a card
violation took him out for a series with the
score at 3-0. Meadows returned for his sec-
ond day of action at the goalie position.
At the half, it was Mosley 4-0. Midway
through the second half, Stevie Blanchette
launched a corner kick to mid-center of the
goal; Mader head butted it over the goalie's
head and found the back of the net to make it
a 6-1 game. The Bulldogs were unable to cap-
italize and pick up another score. The
Dolphins added one more goal to make it'a 7-
1 victory.
In the final game of the weekend,
Marianna took on a tough Lincoln team out
of Tallahassee. Mader got the goalie assign-
ment for the duration of the game, allowing

Barfield's injury was a severely bruised right
side. X-rays were negative for damage to the

Soccer action will continue Dec. I when
