County holds first Fall Festival

BY ASHLEY MCKEEN
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
The Jackson County Early Childhood
Center was crawling with little ones s aw,&
Wednesday morning as the first ever
County-wide Fall Festival commenced.
The Jackson County Early Childhood
Program planned, organized and funded
the event for all pre-kindergarten and
Exceptional Student Educationstudents
attending Cottondale, Graceville and
Sneads elementaries, Grand Ridge and
Malone schools, and the Jackson County
Early Childhood Center.
The planning for the festival had been
ongoing for months prior to the event.
District staff member Edna Riley, along
with other district members and support
staff from The Family & Community
Partnerships met for many monthly staff
meetings, and on two occasions met with . . .
parents from across the county to plan. <. ,.

"As our first ever fall festival, we were . '
very pleased with the outcome," said Kim .
Long, program manager for Jackson ''
County Early Childhood Program. "Every '
spring for the past four years we have held . ' "..
our Tiny Tots Olympics event as a way to ", . '
increase parent involvement with the stu- '

Free HIV

testing at

Chipola

College
BY ASHLEY McKEEN
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Shouldn't you be positive that you're
negative? As a part of a four day cele-
bration for' AIDS awareness, Jackson
County Health Department and BASIC
of NWFL Inc. will be hosting a free HIV
testing day Monday, Nov. 30 from 10
a.m. until 2 p.m. at Chipola College. The
testing will be in the health science
building, lobby D.
Along with the free HIV testing, both
organizations will also be providing free
information on the HIV virus, pre-test
counseling and incentives for getting
tested. Prizes will range from hand sani-
tizers to iPods.
The test being used, OraSure, is a nee-
dle-free exam and is nothing more than a
mouth swab. It tests for HIV antibodies
which would be present in the tissue of
the gums and cheek if an HIV infection
were present, and requires two weeks to
receive results.
"Out of 67 counties in Florida,
Jackson County is tied for sixth in the
amount of HIV positive persons with a
total of 1.6 percent of the tested popula-
tion infected with HIV," said Rick Vitale,
an official with the Jackson County
Health Department.
"There is certainly a necessity for the
free testing and we encourage the com-
munity to take full advantage and join us
in the recognition of AIDS awareness
and World AIDS Day, Dec. 1."
First observed in 1988, World AIDS
Day was initiated by health ministers

Graceville

retired

teachers
BY AMANDA CLARK
SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
Graceville Elementary School was
-busy Thursday with many activities and
visitors. School staff and students were
celebrating "American Education
Week," which is observed Nov. 16
through Nov. 20.
During the celebration, Graceville
Elementary hosted its annual Retired
Teachers Luncheon, and Thanksgiving
lunch for students and their families. A
paper art display was also under way in
the art room.
Several retired teachers from Jackson
County were .present for the luncheon.
Students from each grade level per-
formed songs, read poetry, and spent
time with the teachers, thanking them
and showing their appreciation for dedi-
cating their lives to teaching.
"The most memorable and greatest
thing about teaching is being able to look
back at all the accomplishment of those I
have taught over the years, said retired
teacher Louise Mixson, who taught sev-
enth through 12th grades for 39 years.
"Every day, working with students is a
memorable experience, just knowing
you may have made a difference in their
lives is great, I sure know they made a
difference in mine," said Hubert Hinson,
who taught ninth through 12th grades. "I
wanted to install in my students that
reaching your goals is not dependent
upon how smart you are but upon how
hard you are willing to work toward
them."
Byron Mixson, who taught seventh

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
Webelo Scouts in Pack
170 of Marianna enjoyed a
fun-filled, educational
weekend of activities dur-
ing the Webelos Weekend
celebration Nov. 13-14, at
Camp AlaFlo near
Enterprise, Ala. Webelos
("We'll Be Loyal Scouts")
in Pack 170 include eight
Scouts under the leadership
of Mary Ann Hutton and
Assistant Cub Master Steve
Hutton. These 9- and 10-
year-old Scouts are cur-
rently working hard to
achieve their Boy Scout
rankings by the spring of
2010.
Webelos Weekend was a
special time planned for
first- and second-year
Webelos. Opportunities
were provided for Scouts to
earn five activity pins and
two belt loops, which are
amazing accomplishments
for a two-day event.
Pins earned by Pack 170
Scouts included
Readyman; Outdoorsman;
Naturalist; Forester; and
Geologist, along with the
Geology belt loop.
During Readyman train-
ing, Scouts learned skills to
help prevent accidents and
get help in emergencies.
The character trait of
"courage" is emphasized in
this unit, including four
basic principles when faced
with an emergency: Be
strong, Be calm, Be clear
and Be careful.
The Outdoorsman ses-
sions focused on building
campfires, cooking, setting
up tents, making outdoor
beds, tying knots, and other

important skills needed for
outdoor living. Scouts live
by the Outdoor Code,
which states: As an
American, I will do my
best to be clean in my out-
door manners; be careful
with fire; be considerate in
the outdoors; and be con-
servation-minded. The
Scouting way is to leave no
trace of your presence in
the outdoors.
The Forester component
focused on helping the
Scouts understand how all
the living things on our
planet work together to
keep each other healthy.
Scouts studied how forests
help keep a livable climate
for us and other animals.
For Geologist require-
ments, Scouts explored
how the earth is made and
what fossils can tell us
about the earth millions of
years ago.
Rock. samples were
available for the Scouts to
examine.
Scouts were also respon-
sible for cooking their own
supper. With leader Mary
Ann Hutton's special
recipe and supply of ingre-
dients, Scouts created
"Delectable Dutch Oven
Calzones, Warming
Homemade Noodle Soup,
and Webelos Camp Cheese
Cake."
For the calzones, bread
dough was spread on tin
foil, allowing Scouts to put

Community
Thanksgiving
service set
for Tuesday
SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
, The Greater Marianna
Ministerial Association will
have a Community
Thanksgiving Service on
Tuesday, Nov. 24, 6 p.m. at
the First United Methodist
Church of Marianna.
While many don't associ-
ate Thanksgiving with reli-
gious services, the origins
of the holiday are related to
giving thanks to God.
Thanksgiving services
were held as early as 1607
in Virginia, but the first
Thanksgiving Festival was
observed by the Pilgrims of
Plymouth Rock, who, along
with the Indians in the area,
feasted for three days.
In 1789, following a
proclamation issued by
President George
Washington, America cele-
brated its first Day of
Thanksgiving to God under
its new constitution. That
same year, the Protestant
Episcopal Church, of which
President Washington was a
member, announced that
the first Thursday in
November would become
its regular day for giving
thanks, "unless another day
be appointed by the civil
authorities."
In 1863, .President
Abraham Lincoln set aside
the last Thursday of
November as a national
Day of Thanksgiving. Over
the next 75 years, presi-
dents followed Lincoln's

A MEDIA GENERAL NEWSPAPER

Tigers starting fresh

B DUSTIN KENT.
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR I mMW .

The Graceville Tigers made an
improbable run to the regional
finals last season under coach
Mike Carter.
This year, a new coach and a
younger Tigers squad in a bigger
and tougher district will look to
repeat last year's success.
Former Gulf Coast assistant
Thomas Register is the man in
charge of the Tigers now, and he
takes over a team with only two
seniors.
Finding a way to overcome the
lack of experience is a challenge
for the young Graceville coach,
who said his players still have to
learn what it takes compete con-
sistently at the highest level.
"We're going to be very young
and that will be' a big deal,"
Register said. "Some of (the
players) have to have a change in
mindset. They're not as compet-
itive as I want them to be right
now. They're just out there hav-
ing fun, which is nice, but you
have to get a competitor's atti-
tude to do whatever it takes to
win."
Making things even tougher
on the first-year head coach is
the fact that he didn't get the job
in time to work with his new
players during the summer, put-
ting the whole process further
behind.
"It's definitely a struggle," the
coach said. "(At the start of prac-
tice) I had to spend a whole day
teaching them how I run prac-
tice. (By the second week of
.practice), you're usually out
there running an offense, but we
were still trying to get some of
the streetball out of them and
teaching them how to play the
game."

Graceville coach Thomas Register.speaks to his team during a recent practice in Graceville. -
Mark Skinner/Floridan.

The good news for Register is
that it appears he has willing
pupils.
"We've come a long way," the
coach said. "That first day out
there was probably the most
frustrated I've ever been since I
started coaching basketball. I
couldn't sleep that night.
"Now, they go hard and they
know what to expect. They're
learning that I'm not going to
give in to them, and they're
going to have play my way.

There has been a lot of improve-
ment, but we still have a long
way to go."
Fortunately for the Tigers,
their regular season won't begin
until Dec. 1 with a road trip to
Vernon, followed by home
games against Marianna and
Bozeman later in the week.
Register said that was by
design.
"I wanted to have another
week with my guys before we
get started," the coach said. "I

think that extra week- will be
very beneficial for us."
The Chipley graduate said
while the team was young, he
did like the talent level-he has
seen thus far.
Sophomore Cameron Dozier
returns as the Tigers' leading
scorer from last season with 13.5
points per game, as well as three
'assists and three steals.
Brother CJ Dozier also returns

Lady Indians look to overcome adversity

o ,: Bv DUSTIN KENT ..
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
The No. 22 Chipola Lady Indians are
back in action this weekend in Panama
City, taking on No. 10 Vincennes today at
5 p.mi,
Chipola (3-2) faces Georgia Perimeter
Saturday at 1 p.m.
The top-ranked Gulf Coast Lady
Commodores play as well, taking on
Georgia Perimeter tonight at 7 p.m., and
Vincennes Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Lady Indians are coming off of a
roller-coaster weekend in Marianna, tak-
ing two out of three games against
nationally-ranked opponents at home. '
Chipola avenged its first loss of the
season with a 62-56 win over No. .22
Monroe on Nov. 13, but the Lady Indians
were blown out the following night by
No. 2 Jefferson, 90-59. Starting shooting
guard Jasmine Shaw suffered a season-
ending ACL injury during the game.
After the game, starting point guard
Bianca Jarrett was suspended indefinitely
by Chipola coach David Lane for person-
al reasons, leaving the team with just
seven players for the next game.
However, the Lady Indians bounced
back on Sunday to take a 72-67 win over
.No. 10 Trinity Valley.
"They were just three totally different
games," Lane said. "I was happy with the
way we played on Friday to see how
much better we had gotten in a week, We
executed better and handled things better.
"On Saturday, we fell apart when

Jasmine got hurt. We didn't handle that
very well. That was just a butt-whooping,
but what really made things go well was
how we handled things on Sunday. The
kids went out and really executed. They
played the kind of game we want to
play."
Lane said that the Trinity game was a
great lesson for his team in what it had to
do from this point on to be successful.
"It's just a matter of execution, focus
and paying attention to details," the
coach said. "We're just trying to get that
point across that if we're focused, we're
going to be successful. Against a eren tal-
ented team in Trinity Valley, in a game
people probably thought we wouldn't
win, we went out and executed and did
what we had to do. That drives home the
point with the kids. It's not so much about
talent as it is about execution."
Lane said that he would revisit Jarrett's
suspension after Thanksgiving, but the
Lady Indians will move forward with
only seven players for the time being.
Even at full strength, beating
Vincennes would be no simple task. The
Lady Blazers made the national tourna-
ment last season, and return two of their
top three scorers.
"It will be a big challenge for us," Lane
said. "It's the fifth ranked team we've
played in a row. They've got some really
good shooters and a couple good point
guards who know how to get them the
ball."
Chipola defeated Vincennes in last

GRMS splits

Blue Devils
BY SHELIA MADER
FLORIDAN CORRESPONDENT
The Grand Ridge Indians boys
basketball team's struggles con-
tinued Tuesday night as the "A"
team fell to Bonifay at home 37-
21.
The "B" team redeemed itself
and picked up a solid 29-9 victo-
ry.
In the "A" game, the Indians
stood their ground in the first
quarter ending in a 4-4 tie.
The second quarter was all
Bonifay as they picked up 10
points, while the Indians only
managed two points.
In the second half, the Blue
Devils pulled away for good, put-
ting up 15 third-quarter points
with Grand Ridge answering with
nine points. -
The Indians were led in scoring
by Dustin Pittman 'with eight
points, followed by Darius'
Williams with seven points.
In the "B" team game, it was
all Grand Ridge, as they jumped
out to a 13-4'first quarter lead.
The Blue Devils held-their own
in the second quarter, putting up
five points, with Grand Ridge
posting four to make it a 17-9
game at halftime.
The Indians put the game away
in the third quarter for good.
AJ Johnson le-l the Grand
Ridge Indians with eight points,
followed by Garrett Moody with
four points.

year's regular season
matchup but had to hold off
a late Lady Blazers charge.
It's the first of four
games over the next five
days, a tough task for a
Chipola squad short on
numbers.
"We've had to change
some things up a bit," Lane
said. "We've had to go to
playing a little more zone,
which is difficult for me to
even talk about. It's a little
bit different because we're
usually playing man and
getting everybody's sets
down.
"Now, we're playing
zone, and most teams don't
run many zone sets, just a
zone offense. We just have

to be able find shooters and
box out."
The Lady Indians hit the
road Monday to take on St..
Petersburg, then travel to
Tampa on Tuesday to play
Hillsborough.
Lane said he has spoken
with the team about over-
coming the adversity it is
facing, and finding a way
to win regardless.
"We talked about it
before the game on Sunday
and after it," the coach
said. "We can build on
(Sunday's win), but we
don't have a lot of room for
error. We've got to make
sure we value the basket-
ball, and finish with
rebounds.

Tigers

after putting up 8.3 ppg and
a team-high 3.7 steals per
game last year.
Senior forward Byron
Laster also returns, bring-
ing versatility and scoring
to the table, while 6-foot-5,
300-pound junior Leander
Ford will present an impos-
ing presence in the paint.
"The guys that we've got
are pretty talented,"
Register said. "Our issue is
going to be depth. I want to
play up and down, but I
have to look and see what
we can do with that only
having 10 guys out there.
"The biggest thing is we
have to be tough. We give
up a lot of size, so we have
to be tougher than anybody
and more disciplined. I've
got 10 guys who can play
ball, but we'll have to play
hard-nosed, disciplined
ball. We still have to learn
how to do that."
The Tigers will look to
some new faces to provide
depth and balance to this
year's team.
Junior Kevin Potts will
bring inside-outside scor-
ing ability to' the team.
Allonte Bellamy provides
quickness at the guard posi-
tion, and Ali Williams will
add toughness and
rebounding on the interior.
However, the Graceville
attack will still by triggered
by the sharpshooting
Cameron Dozier.
"Everybody knows about
Cameron. He's one of the
best players in the area,"
Register said. "I would say
from what I've seen of him,
it has been a while since
I've seen a kid who can
score like him and see the
floor like him. He reminds
me a lot of (former Chipley
star) TJ .McCullough with
the way he sees the floor,
can play defense and score.
"Cameron is only a soph-
omore, so he's got a bright
future ahead of him. I
expect him every night to
come out and perform at a
high level."
If the Tigers are to find
themselves "back in the
playoffs this season, they'll
have to navigate their way
through a pretty' tough,
eight-team district.
Cotton dale ,
Blountstown, Vernon,
Sneads, Bozeman, Holmes
County and South Walton
now comprise District 2-
2A, making a postseason
berth a bigger challenge
than ever.
However, Register
believes his team has the
ability to be in the thick of
the league race.
"We've got some good
talent," the coach said.

"But can we bring it togeth-
er, play hard and learn how
to play basketball? If we do
that, we'll be competitive."

"We've got to play with make sure we take care of
the numbers we've got, and business."
