County braces for Ida's rains CHS grad

Q...............- .. breaks in

DY L DEBORAH BUCKAirtXLLER\
Fi i A\ SI FF WRITER
What was a hurricane, but is
now coming ashore as a tropical
storm, Ida has weather watchers
on alert, despite weakening as it
encountered cooler water in the
Gulf of Mexico.
Ida.is expected to dump three
to six inches of rain here by the
end of today, according to
Jackson County Emergency
Management Director Rodney
Andreasen.
He said heavy rain and subse-
quent flooding will likely be the
worst problem associated with
the storm.
He is expected to ask the
Jackson County Commission to
declare a state of emergency
when it meets in regular session
Tuesday. Doing so will allow the
county to seek reimbursement for
any expenses it incurs as at result
of the storm, Andreasen said.
Gov. Charlie Crist has already
iss-ued a statewide emergency
declaration for all 67 counties in
Florida, but the local declaration
is also necessary to recover
storm-related expenditures.
Road and Bridge
Superintendent Al Green and
crews were busy Monday prepar-
ing for the rain.
"We've got barricades loaded
and ready, and we're getting .all
our vehicles fueled up and topped
off tonight," Green said Monday.

Pepples is charged with burgla-

STAFF'REPORT
Police are searching for the sus-
pects who tried to break into
Kelson Drugs some time between.
Sunday night and Monday morn-
ing, according to the Marianna
Police Department.
Employees at the store on North
Jefferson Street reported the
attempt Monday; saying it
appeared the would-be burglar
tried to get in via the outside duct
work of the store's, air condition-
ing unit. The AC system was dam-
aged, to the tune of about $250,
but entry was never made and
nothing was taken from the store.
Police are asking anyone- with
information about the incident to
call Crime Stoppers at 526-5000,
or the police department at 526-
3125. Callers can remain anony-
mous, and a cash reward is avail-
able for information that leads to
any arrests.

Road department kicks off United Way efforts

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FI ORIDAN STAFI WRITER
The Jackson County
Road and Bridge depart-
ment raised $7,200 for the
United Way at its annual
event last weekend. That's
about $2,000 more than
last year.
Held at the Citizen's
Lodge park on Caverns
Road, it's tough to say
what aspect of it raised the
most money.
Department superintend-
ent Al Green cooked his.
increasingly famous pri-
vate recipe chili, selling
588 bowls to account for
almost $3,000 of the final
count. Last year, about 325
howls were sold.
Many people also donat-

ed $1 for a ticket that put
them in, the running to
receive a power tool set or
a four-burner gas grill.
The auction caught other
people's attention, with the
opportunity .to scoop up
some big savings.
A donated truckload of
milling worth about $500,
for instance, was auctioned
off for about $250.
The auction also gave
people an opportunity to
pick up one-of-a-kind arti-
cles, like a porch swing
made of locally harvested
cypress and hand-made by
a local craftsman. .
Some saved their money
for the pic-in-the-face
event, where Green and
several other county
employees sacrificed them-

selves for the cause. Green
got hit with a chocolate
cream pie, himself.
"It got a little messy near
the end," he said of the pie
event. "But it was good."
County Administrator
Ted Lakey, Emergency
Management Director
Rodney Andreasen, Fire
Rescue Chief Tony Wesley,
Community Development
Director Joan Schairer,
Jackson County
Administrative Services
Director Pam Pichard, and
Parks and Recreation
Director Chuck Hatcher
were among the willing
victims.
"We had a good time,
and the volunteers and my
staff here at the road
department deserve all the

credit; they did all the
work," Green said.
For instance, employee
James Brooks -cooked 55
cakes and 12 pecan pies to
auction off for the event.
Other employees heavily
involved included Karen
Indingaro, Carrie Williams,
Libby Dilmore and Gail
Laramore.

Big shoes to fi l this season

The Lady Bulldogs will
have to replace a number
of graduated key players
BY DUSTIN KENT
FLORIDAN SPORTS EDITOR
Last season, the Marianna Lady Bulldogs
and coach Chucky Brown forged a -renais-
sance of the girls haKkeibail pi ogram, reeling
off 19 wins and aJdiicing to the IA regional
finals.
"If the)3 'i to build on that success this sea-
son, Brown and company will have to find a
way to replace some big names from last
year's squad.
Marianna defeated Chipley for the district
championship last season. The Lady Bulldogs
then beat Pensacola Catholic and Walton in
the playoffs before falling to Jacksonville
Ribault one game before state.
Gone from that team are a slew of impor-
tant players, including four-year starting
point guard Janae Godwin, Waynetta Collins
and the three Butler sisters - Niesha, Tierra
and Kierra.
"We're just trying to make some adjust-
ments to fill those shoes of those who aie
gonee" Brown. said. "We're trying to find
another leader to step into the place of Janae
Godwin. She was the vocal leader on the floor
and off the court. We need someone to fill that
void."
Marianna , is also without Derricka
Fitzpatrick, who tore her ACL earlier thip
year and is expected back in early December.
However, the Lady Bulldogs do return a
strong core from last year's team in starters
Christina Wynn, Shera.e Williams and
Deseyee Perry, all seniors.
Shamiqua Davies returns as a key reserve.
Former junior varsity players Andreal
Johnson, Treshae Patterson and Temperance
Wooden will all step into larger roles, after
moving up to the varsity late last season.
"Right now, everything's going pretty
wdel," Brown said. "We're practicing well,
we're running a lot. The No. 1 thing is, that,
with the (Butler girls) transferring, we need to
find some size. Right now, we're a team of

guards. We're looking for-
ward to getting out and run-
ning and pressing teams."
Williams will be leaned
on to provide some post
presence, but Brown said
he may have to turn to the
JV at some point this year
to provide more interior
depth.
It's an issue Brown was-
n't expecting to face this
season.
"Last year, we were only
supposed to lose two (play-
ers)," the coach said. "We.
would just pick up- where
we left off. That was the
girls' mentality. But they
know what they've got to
do. Everybody has been
stepping up in my opinion.
With those losses, someone
will have to step in and
replace Janae and the
Butlers.
"Right now, we have
some kids who worked
hard this summer that have
really put forth some seri-
ous hours."
Even though the Lady
Bulldogs lost some fire-
power, the players who
return bring back a new
kind of experience for the
team: winning in the post-
season.
"Last year, they stepped
in and got a taste of win-
ning. They saw what win-
ning was about," Brown
said of his players. "All
summer they were working
hard because of that. Their
mentality is that, with or
without (the departed play-
er), we're still going to do
what we have to do. We've

got a little saying, which is
'motivation plus 10.' We
lost by 10 points to keep us
from going to state, and
that's all that's on their
minds."
If the Lady Bulldogs are
to get there, they'll have to
navigate their way through
a bigger and more difficult
district schedule. Bay,
Walton, Arnold, Pensacola
Catholic and Chipley com-
prise Marianna's new dis-
trict opponents, making the
road to Lakeland that much
tougher.
But Brown said he's try-
ing to keep his players in
the here and now.
"Right now, it's just day
to day," the coach said.
"We're working on funda-
mentals, perfecting all the
little things. Everyone has
their role on the team, and
everyone will have to stay
in their role. That's the only
way I feel we can win this
year."
While it is yet to be seen
if the they have the person-
nel to make another run at
state, Brown said he is pos-
itive his Lady Bulldogs
have the desire.
"They really enjoy this.
At times they'll call me on
a Saturday or Sunday and
want to get in the gym to
work," the coach said. "The
winning last year changed
the mentality. Once you get
a taste of it, they want it.
That has changed the whole
program here."
Marianna opens the regu-
lar season Nov. 17 at home
against Mosley at 7 p.m.
