Sneads resident Jimmy AldaN
is this year's Quality Hay
ProdUcer of the Year.
A pharmacist by profession.
Alday owns the Sneads Pharmacy
but still finds time for trail riding
and taking care of his 32
Beefmastpr cows..
Producing quality hay is a big
part of taking care of his four
horses, a mule and his cows.
-The delicate digestive systems
of horses demand especially high
quality hay, and Alday, is careful I
to make sure he starts the process
"right and follows through with
good management.
"I have the soil tests and do the
fertilization when it's needed," he
said. "I like to have the quality
tests done to make sure we know
what we've got. This year, the
rain came the right time for
me to cut my hay at the. best
time,when there was more leaf
:hani stem,, when the had\ was
young and the protein % as high."
Alday's 75-acre farm is located
off Walden Road just west of
When there's hay that his hors-
es don't need, he feeds to his
cows or sells to neighboring
farmers. "That's another reason I

Fire hydrant

tests begin

Monday in

On Monday, the
Marianna Fire Department
will begin testing fire
hydrants to assure they're
operating properly.
The annual tests begin
at 8 a.m. each weekday
and will be conducted
generally through 4:30
However, because the
tests sometimes cause a
discoloration of water,
testing around sensitive
areas such as hospitals,
laundromats and dentist's
office will be conducted
after 6 p.m.
Fire officials say resi-
dents should use extra care
when washing clothes dur-
ing this titne, because the
discoloration may stain
some fabrics.
If water discoloration
does occur, let the water
flow until it clears before
The testing period is
expected to run through
the first week pf

Being selected as Tree Farmer
of the Year for 2008 was an
honor. Mike Padgett said
"I'm proud to receive it," he
said. "The outdoors mean a lot to.
me. and the award feels like peo-
ple are say ing I'm doing mni part
to preserve it. That feels good."
He is one of several producers
who %%ill be honored at the big
Farm-City Day breakfast at 7
a.m. on Friday.
Padgett has a 150-acre stand of
slash pine trees off Tanner Road
south of Marianna. He uses the
best-management practices sug-
gested by the forestry depart-
ment. He credits county forester
Barry Stafford with helping him
keep up w ith the programs that
help him do that in the most cost-
effective way.
Padgeti regularly schedules
controlled bums on. his property,
for instance. A forestry program
helps offset the cost. and Padgtdlt
said the bumn practice is \ ial to
keeping his farm healthy.
"Controlled burns help get rid of
overgro th, vegetation that, if it
gets too thick, is bad for wildlife
out here. Keeping it burned off
lets the smaller seeded brush and
grasses come up so the deer and
other wildlife have plenty to eat,"

professional credential
.. Vicki Mathis. Grants
Operations Coordinator for
Chipola College, has earned
a nationally recognzed cre-
dentialinthe grants field and
is among the firsi- ear
awardees for this distincuon.
The recognition is by the
Grant Professionals
Certification. Insuture. Inc.
(GPCI), an affiliate of the Vicki Mathis
American Association of
Grant Professionals (AAGP). Mathis is among the first 200
certified grant designers and managers who were conferred
the "GPC" title as Grant Professional Certified indicating
proficiency in standards that include tenure in the profes-
sion, education, demonstrated achievement and a commit-
ment to service for public and private philanthropy.
"The past decade of activity by the American
Association of Grant Professionals shows this field now
requires skills far beyond just the. staff-level 'writer' role;"
said GPCI President Marcia Ford. "Today, grant profes-
sionals are held accountable not just by their employers,
but especially by charitable and corporate foundations and
governments. They are called upon to negotiate elaborate
collaborations between groups that can leverage more pro-
ductivity than a single agency or advocacy group could
manage on its own."
Beyond meeting eligibility, requirements, GPCs have
mastered nationally standardized" competencies that are
defined by nine skill sets. In partnership with the
University of, South Florida's Tarmpa-based Institute for
Instructional Research and Practice. the GPC exam was
established within the strict ngors of psychomemc testing,
and is subject to accreditation.
Mathis is a 17-year employee of the Florida educational
system having served at Chipola and Washington Holmes
Area Vocational Technical Center. She earned an Associate

don't want to sell something infe-
rior to my friends and neighbors,"
    he said.
He grew up on a farm, and was
active in the FFA during his
youth. In the 9th grade, he was
the FFA Star Chapter Farmer, and
    his interest in farming never
waned, he said. While his is more
of a pleasure farm that a big com-

    mercial enterprise, it's no hobby
    farm, he said.
"It's a small farm, but my cattle
help me pay my expenses. I
wouldn't be doing this if I could-
n't make some money doing it,
but it's a very satisfying way to
    Alday said he was pleasantly
    surprised to be named Quality

    Hay Producer of the Year.
    "It's a real honor," he said, "It's
not something I was looking for,
because this is something I do
    mainly for my own satisfaction,
    but I'm pleased about it."
Alday said he has his wife,
    Marie, to thank for .supporting
    him in all his efforts.
    "She's the one I can't do with-

out," he said. "She's always been
    very, supportive and helps me
    with many things. She's right
    there beside me."
Alday said he's also proud to
have the support his children as
well. His oldest, son Jamie, is a
    sales representative for
    RingPower in Tallahassee. Son
Joseph Alday is an owner in

    Alday-Howell Engineering. His
daughter Rita Alday is a librarian
    at Graceville Elementary School,

    Tree Continued From Page 1A

    Padgett said.
He also thins his stands when
it's time. With fewer trees com-
    peting for sunlight and nutrients,
those he keeps have a better
chance to not only survive but
    grow to a healthy size.
He started his tree farm on land
that he bought after the previous
    .owner sold the timber. Located
near his home, the property was

    very familiar to Padgett he'd
hunted on it as a teenager through
a lease with the owner, and it sits
adjacent to land owned by his
    father, John Padgett.
When Padgett set out his own
    initial stand, he started with
seedlings that stood about a foot
tall at the time. Those 20-year-old
pines were thinned a few years
    ago, and now they're tall

    enough to block the sun.
    He's got younger stands, as
well, and expects to thin the 12-
year-olds in the next two or three
Padgett said he bought the land
    with two things in mind.
"I thought it might be a good
    source of retirement income (sell-
ing trees) for me, but the way
things are going (in the econo-

my), I'm not so sure that's going
    to work out," he said.
But that doesn't worry him too
    much, because profit was never
his primary reason for buying the
land and setting out the trees.
"I love the outdoors and I want-
ed a place to roam and unwind.
    It's my therapy," Padgett
    explained. "I can ride through
here and relax," he said as he

pointed into the woods. "I love to
hunt, too... I usually (get) three or
four deer a year out here. It's real-
ly more about those kinds of
things for me. This land will
    never, never, never be developed
as long as I have it, and I hope it
stays in my family long after I'm

    pared to five investor-owned utili-
    ties, one electric cooperative and
    two municipal-owned utility
    providers, according to Dean.
Of those compared in the study,
    it showed that Marianna residents
T nay thr.o -iohst rate, said. Dean.
    He said the electric franchise

    contract between the city and
    FPU expires in February 2010.
"We have an option to buy the
    franchise back from FPU," said
Dean. "It started out with the con-
sultant just coming in ardd talking
    to the commissioners about the
pros and cons of owning electric.

    Then the commission wanted to
go further to further explore own-
ership and they asked the consult-
ant to do this rate study. After he
did that, there was more discus-
    sion and the commission deter-
    mined that there's about four
more steps that need to take place

up to the final decision of whether
    to purchase the electric franchise,
or rather to put it on the ballot and
    let the city vote."
    With assistance from the con-
sultant, the city will determine the
    feasability of electric infrastruc-
    ture for the city.

Dean expects that the city will
recieve an update from the .con-
    sultant some time in January.
    He said many municipalities in
the area own their own electric
    franchise, including
    Chattahochee, Blountstown,
    Quincy and Tallahassec.

    Lady Pirates one win ,

    away from Final Four

    In her five years as
    coach of the Sneads Lady
    Pirates, Sheila Roberts has
    led her teams to district
    titles and playoff appear-
    However, a win on
    Saturday would propel the
    Lady Pirates to a place
    they haven't been under
    Roberts: the 2A state
    Sneads need only defeat
    Maclay on the road
Saturday at 1 p.m., to earn
a trip to Lakeland and a
    chance at a state title.
    The significance of the
    situation isn't lost on
    "It would, be a great
    accomplishment for the
    girls," she said. "They're
    just excited to play. I'm
    just so proud of them."
    - The Lady Tigers
    reached this point by beat-
    ing Baker Tuesday night
    in dramatic fashion, get-
    ting three straight ace
    serves by Tiffany Guerra
to win the fifth game 15-
    13 and win the match.
    "(Guerra) had a pretty
    tough serving night before
that, so I can't imagine the
    pressure she was under,

    "It would be a
    for the girls. I'm
    just so proud of
    -Sheila Roberts,
    Sneads coach

    but she looked like the
    perfect face of confi-
    dence," Roberts said.
    "That was probably one
    of the most exciting fin-
ishes to a game I've ever
    seen. Those people got
    their money's worth. What
    a great ending. It was
    almost a supernatural kind
    of experience. We're just
going to keep riding it out
    as far as we can."
    However,. Roberts said
    that Tuesday night's game
didn't have to be nearly as
    dramatic as it ended up.,
    "We didn't: play our
    greatest game all around,
    which is a little disap-
    pointing," the coach said.
    "We gave (Baker). a lot
    more points than they
    earned. We're scoring and
earning a lot of points, but

    for every point we're earn-,
    ing, we're giving one up.
    "Those kinds of errors,
can cost you at this level
    of play."
    Roberts said she
    believed her team would
    play much better on
    "I think we'll continue
    picking it up and really
    focus on a few specific
    things that I think will
    make a big difference
    Saturday," the coach said.
"We just have to get back
    to basics and clean up
    some of those, errors and
    I'm confident we'll do
    The -Lady Pirates
    haven't played Maclay
    this season, though the
    two teams have had sever-
    al common opponents,
    which gives Roberts some
    insight into what her team
    will face.
    "I talked to some coach-
    es from Tallahassee and
    everybody thinks we have
    a 'good chance against
    Maclay," Roberts said.
    "They're maybe not as
    strong as they usually are,
but I think they match up
    pretty well against us and
    we match up against them.
We play a similar type of

up during a game earlier this season. With their five-
game victory over Baker Tuesday, the Lady Pirates
are one win away from a berth in the state semifi-
    nals. Floridan File Photo

    The Lady Pirates will
    need to be. extremely
    focused after an emotional
    win against Baker, though
    Roberts said she didn't see
    any hangover on
    Wednesday after the dra-
    matic win.
    "They were so happy
    with their win," Roberts

    said of her players.,
    "But the girls came in
    today and were ready to
    go. They're watching
    game film and they're
    excited about practice. I
don't think they want it to
be over. They want to play
as long as they can keep

    New and improved

    Lady Tigers ready

    for new season-

    The Graceville Lady Tigers
return all but one player from last
year's team and have high hopes
    of surpassing last season's suc-
    The 2008-09 season begins for.
the Lady Tigers Nov. 18 against
    Marianna in Graceville.
' The Lady Tigers will bring to
that game a deeper and, GHS
coach Jon Habali thinks, a more
    talented team.
    Last season's leading scorer,
    Lakeria Smith, is no longer
    around, but GHS returns seven
players from last year's team and
adds a pair of impact transfers
    and a freshman standout.
    Sizeable sister duos Ashley and.
    Alyssa Hogans and Paige and
Jessica Mclendon, as well as tal-
    ented perimeter scorers Mychea
    Williams and Kayla Walker,
return from a Graceville team that
went 14-12 in 2007-08 and lost to
Paxton in the first round of the'
Habali welcomes in a pair of
    transfers in point guards Tamra
    Lee and Shaqupl Johnson, with
    freshman post player, Wynterra
    Pittman, also expected to play.
"There's a lot of talent on this
    team," the second-year coach
    said. "And we're playing team
ball. That's our biggest goal, to
get the girls to play together."
The biggest issue for the Lady
    Tigers last'season was shaky ball-

    M .i1, ,. ,..

handling, with lack of depth a
    close second.
Habali said he thinks both will
    be areas of great improvement
    this season.
    "Our guards have really.
    improved their ball-handling,
which will help us be able to run
our offense and get into our stuff
    better," the coach said.
    "Having a bench is something
we haven't had in a little while.
    Hopefully, having a bench will
mean that some more girls get
playing time and we won't get
worn down during the season. I
hope we can close the games out
    stronger this year because of
One of the benefits of the
    improved depth, particularly at
the point guard position, is that
Habali has been able to move
    sophomore, Mychea Williams,
who played the point as a fresh-
    man last season, to shooting
"I think Mychea is more of a
scorer, which is why I decided to
move her off the point," the coach
said. "We're going to try to play
her more at the (two-guard posi-
tion) so she can get more into the
offense and not just be running
    the offense."
    Habali said that Lee would
make an impact at the point guard
"She's a good little ball player,"
the coach said. "She's a defensive
specialist. If she misses a shot,
she's the first one racing back and

Pictured is Graceville coach John Habali, right, conducting a prac-
tice Monday with a Lady Tigers player looking on. -Mark

    stopping the break. She's non-
    stop hustle."
    Johnson and sophomore
    Brittney Flournoy will also rotate
    at the point guard position.
Habali said he felt his team
    would have an improved post
    presence with Ashley Hogans, the

    Mclendon sisters and Pittman,
    with Alyssa Hogans, Walker and
    Williams providing perimeter
"This is a great group of girls to
work with," the 'coach said. "It
should be a fun season. We're
    looking forward to it."

    County teams

    fall in preseason

    Three Jackson County teams
'fell to defeat in preseason girls
    basketball action Tuesda)
    The Marianna Lady
    Bulldogs lost to Mosley, 47-
    39, in a tip-off classic in Bay,
    with Cottondale and Malone
both going down in Ponce de
    Leon. CHS felt to Bethlehem,
    71-68, .with Malone- losing to
    Walton, 60-46.
    A big second-half rally by
the Lady Bulldogs fell short, as
    Marianna cut a 15-point deficit
to just four with two minutes to
    play but couldn't finish it.
    "Defensively, I think we
    played well," Marianna coach
    Chucky Brown said
    Wednesday. "But (Mosley)
    hurt us with their offensive
rebounding and we came out a
    little shaky."
    Particularly shaky was the
    Lady Bulldogs' free throw
    shooting, as they missed 15
total foul shots for the game.
    "Free throws killed us,"
    Brown said. "That's something
    we're definitely going to work
    on (at Wednesday's practice)."
    Janae Godwin and Kierra
    Butler led the Lady Bulldogs
    with 10 points each.
    MHS will play Bay tonight.
    A missed free throw also
    doomed the Lady Hornets,
    with star guard Shaunte
    FoWard missing the front end
    of a one-and-one with CHS
trailing by a point with 30 sec-
    onds left in the game.
    Foward scored 18 points on
    the night to lead Cottondale,
    which placed three other play-
    ers (Jakia Grimsley 14, Deona
Jones 12 and Shay Wright 13)
    in double figures.
Kiki Paul also had nine for
    the Lady Hornets, who didn't
perform as well in the other
aspects of the game as they did
    on offense.
    "The offense was nice, but
    the defense was not very
    good," Cottondale coach Laura
    Holman said. "We were outre-
    bounded. I know Bethlehem
had 12 points off of offensive
rebounds. If we cut those in
    half, we win the game."
For Malone, it was a night-
    marish start that proved too
    much to overcome.
    The LadyTigers fell behind
24-3 in the first quarter and 37-
    10 at halftime before outscor-
ing Walton in the second half.
    Vanesssa Olds led the team
    with 19 points.
"We just got off to a terrible
    start," Malone coach Steven
    Welch said. "We were nervous,
    jittery...we're just an inexperi-
enced team at this point. But
we came out in the second half
    and showed some pride and
heart and played hard and I'm
    proud of that."
