EJC Ministerial

holiday cheer
The East Jackson County Ministerial
Association is gearing up to help families
this holiday season.
According to organization representative
Bill Pevy, the EJCMA is getting ready for
its annual Thansgiving service for all
churches in the east Jackson County area
and at the event will seek support of its
scholarship program. The service will be
held at the Salem Wesleyan Church on
November 23rd at 6 p.m. A light supper
will follow.
The second EJCMA event is planned for
December 6th at the First Baptist Church of
Sneads. This service will be a fund raiser
for the foster children of the area as well as
lending support to the Sneads Police
Department's Secret Santa program. The
service will be a gospel sing, and entrance
will require a new wrapped toy and a f6od1

The tough economy
nationwide has taken its toll
on a local project near and
dear to organizers Pat Crisp
and Pat Hart, as well. as oth-
ers who worked hard to real-
ize the dream of refurbishing
the Jackson County
For more than two years,
they raised money throughout
the community to give the
courthouse a fresh new
facade and enclose more
space to increase the size of
the cramped courthouse.
On Monday, Jackson
County Commissioners
learned that, for at least the'
time being, the project is off
the table.

The refurbishment team
had gathered in about
$33,000 from businesses and
individuals who believed in
the idea, but is now prepared
to give that money back if the
donors want it.
Otherwise, the funds raised
will go back into the general
courthouse maintenance and
improvement fund, along
with state courthouse alloca-
tions of more than one mil-
lion dollars.
Early in the fund raising
drive, it was made clear that
the donations would-be docu-
Imented so that it would be
easy to return the funds if this
were to happen. It was a
long-shot effort, organizers
knew, but they were making
steady' progress until the
economy started its freefall.

county commission and the
school board, and I served
with the department of agri-
culture as a meat inspector
and in other roles for six
years, so I'm going to con-
centrate now on the things
we've got going on the
farm. When the Department
of Agriculture wanted to
transfer me to Jacksonville
years ago, I said no, I'm
going back to Two Egg and
I'll farm. I love that life,
and my son, Jeff, and I have
some things to do. I'm

happy to put my hands to
that, but I've enjoyed every
minute of my public serv-
ice. Mr. Stephens is coming
in with some new blood,
new ideas, and I wish him
well. I'm happy, and I
appreciate the people.
They've been mighty good
to me, and I'm humbled
and grateful for that. Most
of all, I want to thank the
people for giving the oppor-
tunity to serve them."
Pittman said he was
proud of the fact that he

was part of getting legisla-
tors to recognize the need
for paving assistance in
rural counties.
"When I came on board, I
knew that we needed some
money to resurface some of
the old existing roads we
had. Pat Thomas was a state
senator at the time, and a
good friend of mine. He
came here to visit on a pass
through in 1997, and we
told him that we needed this
help. He said he was going
to work on it, and then next

thing you know, we got a
letter that they were setting
up a program for' small
counties to resurface. I was
proud that I had some role
in getting this funding. I
think we've received about
48 million over the last 11
years, and it helped keep us
from having to raise taxes.
In all the time I've been on
the board, we've only
raised taxes once, and that
was by a decimal point my
first year on the board.
Since then, we've either left

it the same or lowered it. I
think that's something to be
proud of, something that we
tried real hard to do for the
Pittman said he was also
proud to have been a part of
the board during a time that
saw some 1,000 jobs added
to the county, at big opera-
tions like the Family Dollar
Distribution Center and the
Green Circle BioEnergy
plant, as well as smaller
He said he had just one

regret that he wouldn't be
on the board to see the
county embark on a plan to
start paving dirt roads with
some of the 'one-cent gas
sales tax money it collects.
Until now, that money has
gone toward resurfacing
projects. .Commissioners
are still in the talking stages
on that plan, and Pittman
said he hopes they'll follow

Malone Lady

Tig e rs preview

The Malone Lady Tigers will have a new
look to them in the 2008-09 basketball sea-
son, with a new core of players and a new
coach who really isn't all that new to
Malone basketball fans.
Steven Welch, who has coached the
Malone boys for the past three years, will
take the reins of the girls' team this season
as well.
Welch said he was aware of the demands/
of coaching both boys and girls teams, but
felt he was up for the challenge.
"Basically, it was in the process of the
coaching search that I started thinking,
about-it and decided I would try it," the
coach said. "I know it will be a challenge,
but I talked to my friends and family and
decided to give it a try.
"It's going to be tough with the time
away from the house with extra practice
time. With the boys, I just had 15 personal-
ities to deal with. Now you add 10 girls it's
25 I have to deal with. It will just be more
problems to deal with I guess."
Welch said he talked to another coach,
who had done both jobs in Cottondale.
coach Chris Obert, who decided to give up
the girls job this season to coach the boys.
"Chris said that he enjoyed it," the. coach
said. "He said it was tough, but it's doable
if you love the game."
Welch inherits a Lady Tigers team that
won its district and a playoff game last sea-,
son before getting knocked out by Paxton
in the Regional Semifinals.

But this Malone team \ ill look much
different than that one. i ah leading scorer
Mercedes Smith and pla. making guard
Lateisha Sims graduating and starting for-
ward Cassandra Brow n transferring.
The Lady Tigers return four players
from last year's team: Latosha Hall.
Breanna Laster and Vanessa Olds and
Autumn Speigner.
However, the roles of the returning quar-
tet will expand great this season.
"Their roles definitely are going to be
heavier this year, but I ihiqk they're capa-
ble," Welch said. "All the returning players
are capable and experienced and all four
have been to state tournament. They've
been there."
Ne%% to the scene is a collection of fresh-
men: Shakira Smith,. Venisha Hearns,
Karlee Floyd, Villaneequa. Sims and
Olivia Daniels .
\Velch said the 'team, which plays a tip-
off classic tonight against Walton in Ponce
de Leon and open the regular season Nov.
18 against Sneads in Malone, might have
to,' play a bit differently from his boys
teams, which typically play a frantic, up-
and-down style with. lots of fastbreaks and
early offense.
"I'm trying to get the game at a fast
pace, but I may have to modify what I do
some because of a lack ,of depth," the
coach said. "Maybe that will make me a
better coach."
Regardless of what style the Lady Tigers
end up playing, Welch said he has been
enjoying coaching this group. '
"The girls are responding well and

tice Monday. Mark Skinner / Floridan

working hard," the coach said. "They're grades, so regardless of what happens,
great character girls and they've got great they'll be fun to coach."
