Jury selection begins says

quadruple murder case ,,:.. ..wil l " ri

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER

It will likely be Wednesday
morning before opening argu-
ments are heard in the quadruple
murder trial of Wesley Jonathan
Williams.
Williams is accused of shoot-
ing Danielle Baker. to death, and
suffocating her three young sons,
two of which he fathered, back in
March 2005.
Baker, and sons Aaron,
Ahmaad and Amarion, were
found dead in their dwelling at
Cottondale Village Apartments in
Marianna. Baker's two-year-old
daughter was also found inside
the home, unharmed.
In part because of extensive
pre-trial publicity around the
case, and also because a 12-mem-
ber panel is necessary in potential
death penalty cases, Circuit
Judge Bill Wright set aside two
full days to seat the panel. He
also called for a larger-than-usual
jury pool.
The selection process began
Monday morning. About 50 of
the 200-strong pool of jurors
were summoned to start the day,
with about half of those dis-
missed in the first round.
With 22 of the morning set
retained to undergo a second tier
of interviews to determine their
suitability to serve, Wright called
in a second set Monday after-

noon. The court went through the
weeding process with that group
as well. Those retained in the
afternoon session will also be
called in for a second round of
interviews.
In each set, the judge first

allowed those summoned to offer
their reasons if they wished to be
excused from jury duty. Several
lined up to meet him at the bench
and explain. Many were dis-
missed, but may be called again
in a month or so for a different,

perhaps shorter, trial.
With a considerably smaller
field to choose, from after the ini-
tial process, Wright called in the
remaining candidates four at a

Woman attacked during robbery

STAFF REPORT
A woman reported being robbed at knife
point Sunday night in Marianna, saying the
thief pushed her down and kicked her twice
in the ribs after stealing her wallet.
The Marianna Police Department was
called to Jackson Hospital around 11 p.m.
Sunday to interview the woman, who was
being treated there for her injuries.
The victim said she was -attacked around

9:30 p.m. in the rear parking lot of the Auto
Clinic at 4145 Lafayette St.
The victim told police she was walking to
the Budget Inn from the Big/Little conven-
ience store, when a man she had just walked
past grabbed her from behind.
He put a knife against her throat and
demanded her wallet, she later told the
police.
After taking it, he shoved her to the
ground and kicked her before running away

towards the convenience store she'd just
left, police report.
The woman had several scratches to her
throat, along with tenderness to the ribs;
police said.
The assailant-thief was described as a
black man wearing dark pants and white
tennis shoes at the time of the robbery.
Anyone with information is asked to call
the Marianna police at 526-3125 or
CrimeStoppers at 526-5000.

STAFF REPORT
Florida Public Utilities said
Monday it has filed a purchased
power cost adjustment with the
Florida Public Service
Commission.
The end result is consumers
will see higher electric costs.
The cost of power purchased
by FPU from Gulf Power
increase, and the increases will
take effect Jan. 1, 2010. This will
result in a total increase in resi-
dential electric service rates of
13.8 percent, FPU said in a news
release.
Under the new cost structure,
the electric bill for a residential
customer using 1,000 kilowatt
hours per month will increase
from $136.71 to $155.60, not
including taxes and franchise
fees.
According . to FPU, the rate
increase results in part from the
fact that the power it buys from
Gulf Power "will increase signif-
icantly in January."
Buddy Shelley, FPU's general
manager for Northwest Florida,
explained Gulf Power was recent-
ly required to install new scrub-
bers on one of it's coal-fired gen-
erating units. The scrubbers
reduce smokestack emissions.
FPU does not generate power
and purchases energy wholesale
from Gulf Power. By state regula-
tion, purchased power costs- are
directly passed through to cus-
tomers without any mark-up.
FPU does not earn a profit on this
portion of customer's electric bill,
the company stated. FPU's base
customer charge remains
unchanged.
FPU also said under-charged
customers by approximately $1.7
million for purchased power dur-
ing 2009, and must recover that
amount in 2010, in accordance
with Florida Public Service,
Commission rules.
Shelley said Gulf Power's ini-
tial estimate of what it would
charge FPU in 2009 proved to

The century plant in front of
the Russ House in Marianna
inspired many during its brief
moment of glory this summer.
It was taller that the Russ
House when green blossoms
started appearing along the
upper reaches of it's long stalk,
which shot up from the center of
the plant in a spurt of energy in
the weeks leading up to the
plant's blooming phase.
The plant, which despite its
name actually lives about 25
years, blooms only once in its
lifetime - and then dies from
the stress of the effort.
It appears to be entering it's
cycle of death now, with the
stalk turning brown and the
flowers wilting and falling.
The local community made
the most of the plant as the stalk
reached toward the sky.
The Jackson County Chamber
of Commerce, located in the
Russ House, publicized the
plant's awakening and hosted an
outdoor painting event in early
July for artists who wanted to
capture the moment on canvas
or other media.
The public was invited to
attend and watch them work.
Refreshments were sold during
the "paint out."
The artists who sold their cen-
tury plant artwork gave a por-
tion of the proceeds to the Russ
House Foundation. The founda-
tion is a long-term effort to
ensure the building is main-
tained.

Constitution bell strikes 13 at St. Luke's

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN
The historic bell in the
steeple of the St. Luke's
Episcopal Church in
Marianna rang out last
week to join DAR Bells
Across America, in cele-
bration of the 222nd
anniversary of the drafting
of the United States

Harry W. Dunaway, past

rope for 13 strikes as
C.A.R., DAR, and SAR
members listened to the
cherished old bell, which is
tuned to A flat.
The bell had survived a
disastrous church fire in
1941, and at 4 a.m. on June
6,1944, Marianna residents
were wakened and called to
worship as the bell, located
in the basement chapel of

while Game Two was 25-12 Marianna.
In the first game between Cottondale and
Marianna, the Lady Hornets jumped out to a
10-3 lead off the serves of Sierra Lewis,

Taylor Blount then went to the line to com-
plete a round of serves, giving the Lady
Bulldogs a 15-13 advantage.
Not to be outdone, Cottondale countered
with successful serves by Whitney Calhoun
to tie the game at 15, until Marianna pulled
away with Christina Wynn at the line 22-21.
Calhoun again changed the lead in favor of
the Lady Hornets, forcing overtime. Whitney
Lipford and Hannah Shouppe combined at
the serve line to tie the game at 27, with
Sierra Lewis giving Cottondale a 28-27 lead.
Courtney Massengill finished out the game
at the serve line to seal Marianna's victory at
30-28.
In Game Two, Haley Boggs went to the
line for Cottondale, and it was a 3-0 game
before Marianna answered with Shouppe at
the line, to move ahead 9-4. The Lady
