Man charged in home invasion

A Marianna woman was terrorized in
her own home by a man she said she does-
n't know, authorities reported.
Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, the
female victim called from a residence
located east of State Road 71 in Marianna.
She told the police dispatcher that a man
she didn't recognize had entered the resi-
dence by busting out a window pane of the

rear door, the Jackson County Sheriff's
Office reported.
The man,, later identified as William
Tony McCroan, allegedly walked through
the residence yelling out to the woman
with threatening remarks. McCroan's
threats included statements that he was
going to kill her, as she hid inside a room,
Major Donnie Branch of the sheriff's
office said.
The woman eventually made it to a dif-
ferent room in the front of the residence

without being seen. She observed
McCroan walk into the same area of the
house, open a bag on top of a freezer, and
place some of the woman's belongings
into his pocket. She also saw that
McCroan was holding a knife, the sheriff's
office reported.
At that time, the intruder saw the
woman attempting to close a door that was
between . them. He attempted to gain
access to the room in which she was hid-
ing by kicking the door and turning the

door knob, according to the sheriff's
McCroan then exited the residence and
was met outside by deputies, where he was
arrested without further incident, the sher-
iff's office reported.
McCroan was charged with home inva-
sion robbery and was booked into the
Jackson County Correctional Facility.
Because McCroan was still being booked
at press time, his age, address and mug
shot were not available.

A Greenwood man has been
arrested on charges of lewd and
lascivious battery and unlawful
sexual activity with a minor,
according to the Jackson County
Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office reported it
received allegations against
Norris Calhoun, 38, of 6239
Hartsfield Road, back in April
this year.
Authorities then began to
investigate a report that Calhoun
allegedly had been involved in a
sexual relationship with a minor
for a period of several years,
while the child was between 15
and 17 years old.
As a result of the investigation,
probable cause was established
and Calhoun was charged.
The case was forwarded to the
State Attorney's Office for
review, the sheriff's office report-
Subsequently, a warrant was
issued on Tuesday, and on
Wednesday; Calhoun was taken
into custody without incident,
according to the sheriff's office.

Quilters group donate to sheriff's office

The Jackson County
Seniors Quilters Group
recently gave the Jackson
County Sheriff's Office
more than a dozen snuggly
items that could help chil-
dren through rough times.
According to the group's
teacher, Christine Gilbert,
the group of about eight
seniors donated 13 child-
sized, hand-made quilts to
the law 'enforcement
agency earlier this month.
"We certainly appreciate
the time they spent making
those quilts. It took them a
lot of time and they're not
only very pretty, but
they're going to be very
useful," Jackson County
Sheriff Lou Roberts said.
"Sometimes we've seen

'that by just giving a secu-
rity blanket, it makes a.big
difference (to a child)."
Roberts said the sher-
iff's office has also seen
groups donate stuffed ani-
The stuffed animals,
along with the quilts, are
"a very powerful way of
breaking down that fear of
the unknown of dealing
with a law enforcement
officer or with traumatic
issues that may arise like
separation from parents or
a crash," the sheriff said.
Roberts noted that his
department currently has
more than enough stuffed
Gilbert said the group
worked on the quilts for
about six to eight months.
"Most of them are made
with child-friendly fabrics,

bright colors, just some-
thing that a child would
enjoy. It's something that-
might comfort them in a
time of sadness," Gilbert
She said the group
enjoyed the project, and
intends to .continue it, in
between making their own
"Just for therm to have
something to hold on to is
important for the kids. I
thank the people who
work on those quilts. It's
an art and a talent and very
tedious work," Roberts
Seniors interested in
joining the quilting group
may check the Floridan
Community Calendar for
dates and times, and are
welcome to stop by,
Gilbert said.

Artists have diverse
styles, unique to their inter-
pretation of the world
around them. Seldom do
two artists come together to
produce pieces of art. This
is exactly what has blos-
somed from Nancy Zurenda
and Arina Gitana Layton's
creative collaboration.
The inspiration for the
project came about, Layton
said, at the Panhandle
Pioneer Settlement.
Zurenda's charcoal draw-
ing of the Bailey Cabin
caught Layton's eye, and
she requested a print of the
drawing. She also asked if
she could add "some of my
watercolor flowers, and
maybe a clothes line and
other stuff?" The result was
an intriguing blend of two
artists' styles, and the birth
of "Noreen & Claire."
The Blountstown Public

On a mission

Twelve Baptist College
of Florida (BCF) students
were able to participate in
the two college sponsored
mission trips offered over
the summer. One of the
mission trips was to Palm
Coast, Florida led by BCF
Professor of Theology,
Mark Rathel. The other trip
was to Western New York
led by BCF Dean of
Faculty and Professor of
Evangelism and Missions,
Robin Jumper.
Rathel was accompanied
by six students: Gary
Upchurch, Joe Campbell,
Randy Bennett, Martin
Armstrong, Rayel Brigham.
and Tim Brigham. The
joint project of the Florida
Baptist Convention (FBC),
Palm Coast Community

The team focused on wit-

Catholics and helping local
missionaries with church'

Webster, NY. Work includ-
ed prayer-walking, flier
distribution, survey work,
personal evangelism, and
block parties in preparation
for a Bible study scheduled
to start in September.
According to Jumper and
Rathel, something that both
teams experienced was
strong cooperation and
resolve. God helped each
team bond, function like
family, and become bolder
in proclaiming the Good
News of Christ.

'Dawgs ready for action

Marianna set to make 2009 I "' | BHB

debut in preseason jamboree "

The Marianna Bulldogs will
get their first taste of live action
tonight in a preseason jamboree
at home at 6 p.m.
The jamboree will feature three
full halves of football, with the
Bulldogs taking on East Gadsden
in the first half of play, and facing
Liberty County in the third half.
Liberty County and East
Gadsden will face off in the sec-
ond half.
Although it won't count in the
regular season standings, the
jamboree marks the debut of new
Bulldogs coach Steve DeWitt,
who took over for, Rob
Armstrong this summer after the
former Marianna coach took the
Chipley job.
DeWitt said he and his players
are tired of waiting on the season
to get here, and are ready t6 lock
horns with an opponent other
than themselves.
"We're feeling pretty good
about playing," the coach said.
"We're ready to start hitting on
other folks besides ourselves. It's-
important that we come out and
be ready to go, but it's really a
test for us to see where we are at
this point."
The Bulldogs open the regular
season Sept. 4 against Cottondale
at home, with tonight working
out to a live-action scrimmage to
prepare Marianna for the games
that actually, count.
"The main thing is we get a
chance to get our' players, on
film," DeWitt said. "Then we can
take a look at it, get a grade for
them and go.into next week with '

DeWitt said there would be no
elaborate gameplan, with the
emphasis rather on working out
the kinks before the season and
staying healthy.
"This is a jamboree, so they're
not going to show us everything
they've got and neither will we,"
the coach said. "It's a tune-up
game. We're interested in getting
our kids some playing time, so
we can see who we need where."
DeWitt said his first team units
will likely play the entire first
period, with all of the Bulldogs'
reserves getting a chance to
impress the coaches thereafter.
The Bulldogs coach said his
team was dealing with some
minor injury issues, although
only senior lineman Brandon
Hughes would miss tonight's
. Senior wingback Tre Long will
return to action for the first time
after a knee injury sidelined him
for all of spring practice.
DeWitt said Long would likely
play just one series, before com-
ing out of the game for good.
"With an injury like that, he
probably won't be completely
healthy until he gets out of athlet-
ics," the coach said. "But he's a

kid and he wants to be out there."
That's the kind of attitude
DeWitt gaid he hoped to see from
all of his players tonight.
"I want to see some intensity,"
the coach said. "I want to see the

kids doing their job, and carrying
out their responsibilities. But the
intensity is the big thing."
A tackling 'exhibition would
seem to be next on DeWitt's list.
"Tackling is one thing we've

been working hard on in practice,
and that's one thing I thought we
really needed to improve on," the
coach said. "We're getting there,
and that's something we'll be
looking hard at (tonight)."

Bullpups aiming for

perfection, redemption

For most teams, a 7-1 season is truly
That is certainly the case for the
Marianna Middle School Bullpups and
coach Hunter Nolen.
Although for. theBullpups, it's not the
seven wins that are memorable; it's the
one loss. Marianna's dreams of a third
consecutive undefeated season ended in'
2008 with a loss to River Springs.
The Bullpups again play River Springs
this season. Nolen said that he and his
team have, been waiting for the chance at
redemption.ever since last season ended.
"I can't tell you. how really motivated I
,am personally and the team is to play
River Springs again," the coach said.
"It was the first game we had lost in
three years, and it really changed the
demeanor of the team. We have it circled
on the calender and, we're waiting for
them. We want to have another undefeat-
ed season."
If the Bullpups are to do that, they'll
have to do so with a mostly new cast of'
characters. MMS lost all but six starters,
from last year's team, including quarter-
back Bradly Middleton.
The Bullpups do return running backs
Jacquez Wooden and ShaunDre McAroy,
and Nolen -said the two backs would be
the catalysts for his team.
"The team will go as far as they take

They sort of remind me of Chris Bowers
and Emmanuel Batson. They're not quite
as athletic, but maybe can get there. Quez
is a hard runner up the middle. He'll get
you the tough yards. McAroy a speedster.
He can get the comer and break a long
run at any time. They're both good kids,
and I expect a lot out of them this year."
The favorite to handle the QB duties for
the 1ullpups this year is eighth-grader
Jonathan Sikes, according to Nolen:
"Sikes is real tall and can see over the
line, which is big," the coach said. "He's
also a pitcher for the baseball team, so he
has a pretty good arm. He was probably in
the lead going in (to preseason practice)."
Nolen said Derrick Knowles and Blake

the position.

- Dr. Jerry

How to Prepare for

the Turn Around
While the economy has riot been doing great, there is no
question in my mind that signs are pointing towards positive
economic growth. The Consumer Confidence Index and the
stock market are beginning to show some positive signs.
Additionally, the Fed is talking about raising interest rates and
other country's economies are turning around. All of these
factors indicate that we are starting to bottom out of this nasty
recession. Like most things, the spoils go to the person or
business that prepares for these changes, and we need to start
preparing for the uptick in business that is right around the
comer. Jim Moran's (founder of the Jim Moran Institute)
favorite quote was, "The future belongs to those who prepare
for it!" One of the things that each business needs to do is
revisit its strategic plan. I do a lot of strategic planning for
companies, and.I have yet to see a business preparing for
recovery with a viable plan. These business owners have been
occupied coping with this recession for the last 18 months;
however now, each and every business should be planning for
the turn-around. Bottom line, every business needs have a
recovery plan incorporated into their strategic plan. A recov-
ery plan is the necessary preparation for the increase, in
demand and revenue that will accompany an economic turn-
around. As part of this plan, there are two critical tasks that I
think you need to start doing now: investing in technology
and acquiring staff. You have to be able to service your clients
very efficiently as we progress, and you must have the IT
infrastructure in place before the economic activity really
takes off. Now is the time to verify that you have a plan to
acquire the technology needed to deal with this increased
demand? While you may not be able to afford all of this now,
you can put a plan in place to add these necessities, as quick-
ly as possible once the funds start rolling in. From a technol-
ogy perspective, you should ensure that your. server is capa-
ble of handling the additional demand, that you have software
for customer relationship management (CRM), and that you
have enough computers to accommodate a much larger staff.
To weather the recession, I have seen many businesses reduce
their IT expenditures by cutting back on adequate backups
and current versions of new software. Now is the time to
think' about the areas that you have cut back and figure out
how you are going to bring them up. to speed, if not right
away, sometime in the near future.,
The second critical part of your recovery plan is the addi-
, tion of staff, be it now or in the near future. Currently, poten-
tial employees are readily available an are willing to work at
very reasonable rates. If you wait to hire staff until you need
them - a recipe for disaster - your customer service is
going to suffer. Hiring later will also mean paying a much
higher price for new staff members, not to mention that the
quality is not going to be as good as it is now. With any
staffing increase, training is a necessity. During the recession,
you may have slowed training activities, but as you hire on
new employees, you will need to ensure that these programs
are put back in action. Now go out and make sure you have a
recovery plan in place that incorporates additions to both
technology and human resources. You can do this!
