Family devastated

after Sunday fire

Latrell McClain searches her home for items she can salvage
after a fire Sunday night. - Mark Skinner / Floridan

Four young children, their
mother and grandmother are
struggling to rebuild their lives
after a house fire destroyed
many. of their belongings
Sunday night in Marianna.
According to Capt. Nakeya
(Nicky) Lovett of the
Marianna Fire Department,
the fire at 4238 Lillianette St.
was called in at 7:34 p.m. The
crew from Station 2 on the
Kynesville Highway was the
first to arrive, about five min-
utes later.
Flames and smoke were
sho\ ing from the back of the
wood-frame house when they
got there, Lovett said.
The blaze was under control

within roughly 20 minutes,
Lovett said. The major fire
damage was to the kitchen and
to the back bedroom where the
blaze wAs believed to have
originated. The cause of the
fire has not yet been deter-
mined, but arson is not sus-
pected, Lovett said.
Other parts of the house suf-
fered smoke and heat damage,
as well as water damage from
the firefight.
Lovette said a neighbor was
injured before firefighters
arrived as he and several oth-
ers. tried to enter the house on
what turned out to be an
unnecessary lifesaving mis-

incorrect information that

in the house were unaccounted

some stitches, Lovett said, but
is otherwise fine. The men
could not get inside because of
the intensity of the heat, which
was measured at 400 degrees
at head level when firefighters
arrived and a took a reading on
their new thermal imaging
A few minutes, into the fire-
fight, Latrell McClain and her
four children returned to the
residence and discovered the
-firefight in progress.
Ms. McClain had just taken
her mother, Annie Doris
McClain, to the hospital for a
medical problem and had gone
back home to change her four-

year-old daughter's clothes.

sons and daughter lived their

has provided them temporary
lodging, food, some clothing
and shoes, but the family will
need additional assistance.
All or most of the back-to-
school clothes and supplies
that McClain had bought were
damaged or destroyed the fire,
she said.
The boys need everything
from notebook paper to back-
packs, she said, virtually
everything on the typical
back-to-school list.
McClain said her four-year-

thing that I feel very adamant
about. I will do everything in
my power to preserve the
water rights of Jackson County
as well as all riparian rights in
the State of Florida. This is a
people vs. people issue and not
a humans vs. mussel issue as
many in Georgia would like to
think. What I find very inter-
esting is that Georgia wants to

share the water that is left in
the basin but only after they
take all they want of unregulat-

people of Jackson County s
fault at the unregulated water
usage that Georgia and specif-

been using at their discretion.
We must also help our neigh-

oyster harvest and consider the
economic impact it will have
on their community as well.
