Former Malone councilman found dead

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Former Malone Town Council
member Robert Hagler was found
dead in his home of an apparent gun-
shot wound early Monday morning,
according Major John Dennis of the
Jackson County Sheriff's Office.
The JCSO is leading an investiga-
tion into the death, Dennis said, but
foul play is not suspected. An autop-
sy is pending to determine the offi-
cial cause of death.
Hagler.63, served as a member of
the Malone Town Council from
January 2004 to October of 2005,
when he resigned to devote more
attention to his business, according
Malone Mayor Gene Wright.
Wright said he understood that
Hagler traveled extensively to vari-
ous exhibitions, where he sold a vari-
ety of merchandise to those who
attended the events.
Wright remembered Hagler as
someone who cared for his commu-
nity, and said the two of them went to

Tallahassee in August of 2005 for a
private meeting with then-Gov. Jeb
Bush. They talked with the governor
about the need for state assistance in
extending the town's sewer service,
Wright said. That's a project the
town is still working to achieve, and
Hagler showed a continuing interest
in the issue after he left office,
Wright said.
He said he also remembered that
Hagler was deeply moved when the
city named a park after Julius Smith,
a personal friend of Hagler's who
died-while serving as a town council-
man.
He said Hagler also seemed happy
when he was able to move back into
his family's old homestead on 10th
Street some time ago, although in
recent times he had spent less time
there due to his travel schedule.
"His family has been here a long
time," Wright said. "His dad owned
some businesses here in town, so he
was connected to us. He was a real
likeable guy, and it's sad that he's no
longer with us."

Robert Hagler

Wright said someone called him
early Monday to say that they'd
heard. reports of a problem at
Hagler's home. Wright said he went
there immediately and learned of
Hagler's death at the scene.

Sunflower reaches skyward

BY DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
Clover Byford inherited a green
thumb from her mother and grand-
mother, but her most recent success'
is way above average, even for her.
The giant sunflower growing in her
garden on Deering Street in
Marianna is taller than the power line
there, and she said it makes her near-
ly seven-foot-tall grandfather "look
like a stick figure" when he stands
near it.
Byford and her twin 9-year-old
daughters, Jahnay and .Ariel
Beswick, planted the sunflower from
seed about two months ago. The' .
grew more and more astounded a.
they checked its progress from da\ to
day.
"We have a small yard, and it's just
towering over everything," By ford
said. "I've never seen one that tall
before in my life. It's got one next to
it which is over 10 feet tall, and that
one's a baby compared to it. I had
some last year that I thought %kere
huge - they were up to my chest - but
this is really unbelievable. The stalk
is bigger than your wrist - my moth-
er couldn't even wrap her had around
it. We're not tall enough to measure
it, but it's got to be one of the tallest."
Her mother, Esther Brinson, \ent
out to measure one leaf's length on a
recent day.
"Nineteen inches," she called out
to her daughter.
"All of the rest of them are pretty
much like that, too," Byford said of
the sunflower's leaves. "I bought the
seeds locally, and we have plants
everywhere. We've got about 20
smaller sunflowers growing out here.
I encourage the kids to plant stuff. so
this is kind of fun for us to watch.
They help me in the garden, so I
guess we all caught the gardening
thing from my mother and gland-
mother."

Council member Robert Hagler, who was found' dead at his home

ure of the sunflower growing in their front yard. - Mark Skinner/Floridan

Chipola, said she didn't do anything
special to the soil when she planted
and nothing since, either.
"It's just plain old dirt," she said.

"The only other thing I've put out is
the bug control that I treated, the
whole yard with. I can't explain it."

Woman accused
in heroin bust at
Washinigton Co.
corrections facility

By DEBORAH BUCKHALTER
FLORIDAN STAFF WRITER
An Ohio woman lost her free-
dom on Independence Day after
being accused of trying to smug-
gle heroin into the Washington
County Correctional Facility.
Mildred Damaris Torres, 34, is
charged with trafficking heroin,
possession of marijuana, and
smuggling contraband into a
detention facility, according to
Washington County authorities.
Torris was found in posses-
sion of about four grams of
heroin divided into 30 individ-
ual packets, authorities said.
The "prison value" of the
heroin was estimated at
between $250-$500 per pack-
age, according to authorities.
Torres was also in possession
of less than 20 grams of mari-
juana, officials allege.
According to a press release
from the WCSO, Torres was taken
into custody while visiting an
inmate at the correctional facility
on July 4.
The arrest was made after offi-
cers received information that
Torres would be bringing contra-
band into the prison and deliver-
ing it to an inmate housed at
Washington CI.
She was transported to the

Mildred Damaris Torres
Washington County Jail where
she is being held on a $41,000
bond.
Authorities listed her address as
3282 Pine Valley Rd. in
Columbus, Ohio.
Washington County Sheriff
Bobby Haddock cited good com-
munication between Department
of Corrections staff and county
authorities as a major factor in the
arrest.
"Whenever information can
flow so efficiently between agen-
cies, our ability to foil this kind of
illegal activity improves exponen-
tially," Haddock stated in a press
release about the incident. "Our
investigators did an exceptional
job on this case and we have to
credit the Department of
Corrections inspectors for their
invaluable work and information
which was key to getting this
arrest."
Heroin is extremely rare in this
part of the country, he said.
For many local law enforcement,
officers, this was a first-time
heroin bust.-

Rodriguez announces bid for county school board seat 3

Horacio "Doc" Rodriguez M.D.
announces his candidacy for Jackson
County School Board Member
District 3. I am the proud husband of
Ada Rodriguez and three school aged
sons. I have been practicing medicine
successfully in Marianna, Florida
since 1999. My -private practice is
located at 2928 Daniels Street. At the
Marianna Family Care Center I prac-
tice Internal Medicine, Family
Medicine, and Pediatrics. I am
known to my family and friends as
"Doc."
I am a licensed practitioner of
medicine not only in the state of
Florida, but also in the states of New
York and Pennsylvania. In 2005, I
received two prestigious awards for
the NRCC as Physician of the Year
and Business Man of the Year. In
2006, I was cited in "Who's Who"
lists of Cambridge and Empire
Medical Registries. In 2000, I formed

the first Fibromyalgia Group
Outreach Program here in Jackson
County to bring sufferers of this
chronic pain disease and their fami-
lies knowledge and comfort concern-
ing the care and treatment of
fibromyalgia.
Education is close to my heart.
Raised by two hard working parents,
Maria and Horacio Rodriguez. My
parents had many problems trying to
make ends meet. Athletics was my
ticket into college. I desire to become
a part of the ever-changing and ever-
growing educational field for our
children by seeking membership to
the Jackson County School Board for
District 3. My educational platform
is "Health to Education." For me,
health and education form the com-
plete wellness of our children. The
two elements are indispensable in the
holistic educational development of
each child. I want to make a good

system better. There are some areas
of concerns that I would like to
broach as a school board member in
order to enhance the learning and
teaching environment of both student
and teacher.
1. Teachers and students have a
safe environment to learn and teach.
2. More parental involvement in
their child's educational develop-
ment.
* 3. Careful background checks of
all newly hired school personnel.
4. The arts reintroduced in all
grade levels.
5. Readdress the learning styles of
all Jackson County students.
6. Teacher's salaries should reflect
the inflated economy. (Teacher's
need more money and benefits. Poor
budgeting should not encroach upon
a teacher's annual raise.)
7. Teachers should be encouraged
to pursue advanced levels in their

degrees in their subject area with
money provided by their school
board.
8. Cut down on truancy with
active truant officers. I also believe
we should be heavily involved with
the local law enforcement so that we
may work together in deterring gang
involvement and drug activity, help-
ing assist in the safety of our children
and staff.
9. Discipline measures for the
recalcitrant child should be meted
out by the parent, teacher, and
administration.
10. More tutoring and mentoring
programs for students at all grade
levels.
11. Teach our students more than
just material that will be on the
FCAT.
Finally, a percent of the money I

Area youth recognized by

Chipola Chapter, NSDAR

Jackson County Floridan * Tuesday, July 8, 2008 - 3A

SPECIAL TO THE FLORIDAN

The DAR believes that the education of our
youth about American citizenship is of
supreme importance for national defense.
Nineteen National Defense Awards were
recently presented to students in Jackson,
Calhoun, Liberty, Washington, and Holmes
counties by Chipola Chapter, NSDAR.

The Bronze ROTC Medal was awarded to
Cadet/Captain Amber Odom of Chipley High
School, Cadet/Captain Ashley Ross, of Holmes
County High School, Cadet Rachel Shepard of
Liberty County High School, and Cadet
Amanda Madore of Vernon High School.
Recipients of the award were chosen for "qual-
ities of dependability and good character,
adherence to military discipline, leadership
ability and a fundamental and patriotic under-
standing of the importance of ROTC training."
The DAR has awarded ROTC medals since
1967, believing that the ROTC is an important
source of trained officers for our nation's armed
forces.
Each year the Chipola Chapter DAR
National Defense Committee presents the
Good Citizenship Award to students "who ful-
fill the .qualities of honor, service, courage,
leadership, and patriotism." The following
fifth graders received the medal for 2008:
Breanna Walker, Altha School; Heather Yoder,
Blountstown Elementary School; James Patrick

The Area's O

Board Certified

Chiropractic Neurologist
"The foot bone's connected to the...head bone!"
'At Dr. Kurpa's office we know how the feet are the
foundation of the entire spinal pelvic structure. Any
fallen arch or misalignment in the feet can cause pain
(now or later) in the knees, hips, back,or neck and '4
even cause them to wear out prematurely. Many spinal
conditions are actually the result of feet that are poor-
ly supported, and we can fix that!
We Now Have The AssociateM Platinum from
Foot Levelers. The Associate Platinum is a digital scanner that
examines your feet and each of the foot's three arches. It prints
a color photo of your feet to show where you may have issues
that could affect the rest of your body. We then can recommend
customized Stabilizers made just for you!

Dragons 16U team place 2nd in Mississippi Mayhem Basketball

The Harambee Dracgons AAU

boys basketball team from
Marianna recently competed in
the Mississippi Mayhem
Basketball Classic. In the 16U
division, the Dragons placed
2nd. "Our guys advanced
through some tough chal-
lenges," said coach Darold
Pope. 'We were a couple of
plays away from winning, the
championship. Marcus Humose
had an outstanding tourna-
ment, averaging 23 points per
game. Nehemiah Gilbert hit a
big shot to put us into the

Bertha now 1st hurricane

of the Atlantic season

MIAMI - Hurricane
Bertha continues to strength-
en as it moves over the cen-
tral Atlantic Ocean.
As of 11 a.m. EDT
Monday, the Atlantic sea-
son's first hurricane was cen-
tered about 775 miles east of
the northern Leeward
Islands. National Hurricane
Center forecasters say Bertha
is expected to turn in the gen-
eral direction of Bermuda.
It's still to early to tell
whether Bertha will hit the
island, but forecasters urged

residents to monitor the
storm's .progress.
Maximum sustained winds
have increased to speeds of
90 mph with higher gusts.
Some strengthening is
expected during the next 24
hours, and forecasters say
Bertha could become a
Category 2 hurricane later
Monday.
Bertha is headed west-
northwest at about 15 mph
and is expected to slow dQwn
in the next couple of days.
