The Daily Sun was based in Gainesville, the seat of Alachua County and shipping center for Florida’s citrus region. The newspaper was formed through the merger in 1890 of the Gainesville Advocate and the Daily Morning Record. The Daily Sun described itself as a “democratic” paper. It was published daily, except Mondays, by Henry Hamilton McCreary, the scion of a prominent southern family. After completing a degree at the University of Kentucky, McCreary established himself as a newspaper editor at the age of twenty. McCreary also rose to prominence as a politician in the Democratic Party, first as a city councilman and later as a member of the state assembly, to which he was re-elected several times. McCreary considered himself a staunch patriot and fervently supported industrialization as a means of strengthening Florida and the nation. McCreary’s wife, born Irene Richardson, was well connected in the civic networks of Gainesville and northeast Florida and served both as vice-president of the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs and president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The Daily Sun was continued, in 1903, by the Gainesville Daily Sun which briefly carried the title of the Gainesville Sun.

T H! WORLD as the "Chief Champlon In America of Democratic deas" will (e
the most Interesting newspaper in the Country in this Presidential cam.
It already has a much larer daily circulation than ncty toer morning new,.
paper in America.,L
We are beginning a camspalgn that promises to be rntmorable In history. Ry a
single act of Inspired courage the Democrdtic leader ha restored his party to Its
old place as the Instrument of enlightened reform, sane and practial Ilberallapa,
clear-headed progressiveness and constitutteoai loverneatm.
While the question of the standard of value remained an issue all other topic
were submerged and the Democracy could not play Its historical part. In: the
"absence of that restrainaln force the Republican party ha* rioted In Imperialisn,
nttnlization, militarism, extravagance and privileged Injustice. Now the time has
come when it can be called to account. Once more a party wisely, bravely and
honestly led can raise with hopefulness Tilden's old war cry, "Turn the rascal
out I"
The Democracy is ready to correct the abuses of, a monopoly-breeding tarVi,
to promote trade with our neighbor in Canada, to cut short the 4nsa rivalry
with the military powers ot Europe in armaments made needless by tsrha thouant
rals of ocean, to substitute the reis of law for Uth per m 'al apriee an as i*
trary ruler, to restore economy sad Integrity in goVernmeat, to bring arrogpi
toanb!ttlons of capital uader leal restraint, apd to discourate the peieimast as-
edianatlion of the American ila in any country In which the ielarsatioe of Ilad
pendence Is a seditious document To the attainment of these *nd Thil World
pledges all Its energies.
