The Daily Sun was based in Gainesville, the seat of Alachua County and shipping center for Florida’s citrus region. The newspaper was formed through the merger in 1890 of the Gainesville Advocate and the Daily Morning Record. The Daily Sun described itself as a “democratic” paper. It was published daily, except Mondays, by Henry Hamilton McCreary, the scion of a prominent southern family. After completing a degree at the University of Kentucky, McCreary established himself as a newspaper editor at the age of twenty. McCreary also rose to prominence as a politician in the Democratic Party, first as a city councilman and later as a member of the state assembly, to which he was re-elected several times. McCreary considered himself a staunch patriot and fervently supported industrialization as a means of strengthening Florida and the nation. McCreary’s wife, born Irene Richardson, was well connected in the civic networks of Gainesville and northeast Florida and served both as vice-president of the Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs and president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The Daily Sun was continued, in 1903, by the Gainesville Daily Sun which briefly carried the title of the Gainesville Sun.

the s6aMate to order this mnorting. There
being no- new bills or- resolutions intro-
duced, messages from- the house were
taken up and the bills reported to the
Senate for that body were read the Arst
time ani played upon their second read-
ing without being referred to c-mit-

Committee reports were then- received,
S-read and disposed of.
Senator Hammond'a revenue bill was
then taken. up and was under consider-
ation the 'remainder of morning session.
Amendment after' amendment was of-
feted, tat the isposition of the senate
Seemed to be to vote them all down. A
fewer, however, were passed,
Probably the hardest fight made upon
ay provision of th revenue- bil was
that made by Senator Browne of Mon_-
roe. It was proposed by this bil t tax
the manufacturers of tobacco -in this
state #100 per year as an "ocenpational"
license. Senator Browne'alled- Vice-
P residentt Swearingen. to -the chair and
introdeid an amendenet inaling the
tax the same as that provided. _by the
pr-eent law-$14--wh-ich was voted
down; but later on he snucceded in get-
tinjl the vote upon a reconsideration
and he convined -the senate of the
great injustice that wotild be done this
elasi of malnfacturer, espec-ially in his
county, should that provision become -a
-law, and when the amendment was snb-
mitted again it became a tlaw.

taken up again on its second reading
aad it occupied the attention of the sea-

taCen up for its pas age the first thing

A motion was then made to adjourn
until 10 o'clock tomorrow and voted

tled "an acti making appropriations for
the -East Florida- Seminary, situated at
Gainesvile,"- was among the many tills
on their second reading considered by
.the onuse. The bill proposes to appro-
priate $2,500 to the said seminary to pay
off certain debts incurred by ,hat insti-
tutior. -and it met with considerabte op-
positionn- Mr. Youngtof Manatee moved
-the indefinite postponement of the bill,
upon whimh the ayes and nays were call-
ed for. --The motion to indefinitely post-
pone was lost by-a good majority. 31r.
Robinson offered an amendment cutting
the appropriation downto $1,500. Mr.
Young offered an amendment to-the
amendment, making the appropriation
$60.0instead of $1,500, which was laid
upon the table, and- the amendment
making the appropriation $1,500 wa
adopted. No other amendments being
offered thebill was m ordered engrosed
fior its Ihird reading. -
-At 10 o'clock, under a special order of
the day, the consideration of the motion
to reconsider the vote by which the
house joint resolution No. 64-propos-
ing tomove the capital to Ocala-was -
lost yesterday, was resumed. The mor
dion to reconsider prevailed by a vote of i
35 to 15. The speaker then announced
that the question before the house was
upon the-passage of the resolution. The
leitk called theroll, at the conclusion
-of -which the vote was announced as
follows: Yeas 44, nays 14. The speaker

down, as was.a motion until 9 o'clock ot
the same day. Another iOtuon to ad-
joorl. fixing the time for mIefting at
