British Amerioa Indians.
A French titled lady made a trip
that took her 1,00 miles beyond cvill.
nation in the far northern districts of
Britlsh America. She went forth ac-
companied by only two Indian gulAes
ad penetrated to the sixtieth parallel,
riding astride, tramping, paddling In
light canoes, floating down treachcr-
ons, rock picketed rapids In clumsy
native bqrges an for one period of
two weeks seeing no human being ex-
cept her two Indian servants. "The
Indiana in that regon are very super.
Utitlous, v a ungrateful, very Inde-
pendent, bu ery honet. I Invited a
chief to have luncheon with me. e
refused. TO eat In company with a
woman would degrade him. He would
lose clt with hi tribe. In another
part 7 the country I had aoe In-
diana and their squaw on an expedl.
tion. But the Indianl would not pler
mit me to shoot any game. One of the
traditions of the tribe, left by some old
medicine man lon since dead, was
that If. a wema were ever permitted
to boot mosel or dk gme would be
come canoe and the auWaws would be-
come powerful and master the men. I
offered them $10 for every shot I
mligt make, but Jaoney was no In-
ducemeat."-San Francisco Cbronldoe.
