HANS THUMBLING.

Once lived a long-nosed Tailor,
Who had an honest wife,
And they, for years together
Had led a cheery life.
But still one trouble
Grieved them,
So little was their son—
fz or very hard
It seemed that he
No bigger than
A thumb should be!
“ Hans Thumbling” then, they gave him for a name,
And since as “Thumbling” he’s been known to fame.
But tho’ so little, he was strong and bright,
Well formed and healthy, and took great delight
In warlike deeds, and once indeed was seen,
To pierce three horse-flies with his sword so keen;
Which though it was Hans Thumbling’s battle blade,

Was only from a tailor’s needle made.

While as they swiftly rose in dizzy flight,

The sportsman looked with wonder at the sight.

Then, with a sure aud steady hand,

But Hans rose to the surface,

Almost as good as new;

And though a coat of dripping weeds he bore,
Struck boldly out, and paddled to the shore.

There, balanced on a lily-pad,
With graceful motion swayed ;

Dressed in a robe of shining green,
A young and lovely maid;

In size a perfect mate for Hans,
Bright flowed her golden hair-

Blue as the sea her sparkling eyes,
A Nymph of beauty rare,

Her little hands, she reached to him,
And drew him to the shore ;

Said she “Dear Hans, I love you well,
Be mine forever more.—

Queen of this mighty lake am I,
And you shall be my King,

But Hans replied, “I cannot stay,

Near by, a grassy meadow lay,
Where clothed in snowy fleece,
A Lambkin. fed in peace,
And frisked in happy play.
When lo! a fierce Wolf, gaunt and gray,
Stole from the gloomy wood,
Where he concealed had stood,
And bore the lamb away!

The trembling Hare beheld with fright,
The pretty Lambkin’s sorry plight,
And to the Farmer ran;

“Help! help! The Wolf! the Wolf!”
The Hare, all panting said,
“Oh! Farmer bring your stick

For many a year a cottage stood;

And there, two orphan sisters dwelt,
With whom the world had kindly dealt—
For tho’ their work was sometimes rude,
They had not lacked for daily food.

Upon the word, she clasped his neck
In close and fond embrace,

When lo! a sad and wondrous change
