LInHIG THE AmERICAS.
Por el Tratado de Mutuo Entendimiento y Cooperaci6n y el MemorAndum de Entendimientos Acordados entre la Rep6'blica de Panama y los Estados Unidos de America celebrado en 1955, los Estados Unidos se comprometieron a construir un puente en Balboa.
Su construcci6n fue autorizada por ley del Congreso del 23 de
agosto de 1957.
Se vot6 la partida correspondiente por ley del Congreso del
28 de agosto de 1957.
La construcci6n del puente fue iniciada en diciembre de 1958. Las obras se terminaron el 12 de octubre de 1962 fecha en que
el puente fue inaugurado.
Extension del puente: 5,425 pies. Extension de la luz central: 1,128 pies. Elevaci6n sobre el Canal: 201 pies a marea alta. Elevaci6n maxima: 384 pies. Peso de la estructura de acero: 16,975 toneladas. Profundidad maixima de los pilares: 70 pies a marea alta. Costo, incluyendo las aproximaciones al puente: $20 millones.

Memorandum Of Understandings Reached Between The Republic Of Panama And The United States Of America committed the United States to construct a bridge at Balboa.
Authorized by an act of Congress July 23, 1956.
Funds appropriated by an act of Congress August 28, 1957.
Construction initiated December 1958.
Construction completed and Bridge dedicated October 12,
1962.
Bridge length: 5,425 feet.
Center span length: 1,128 feet.
Clearance over Canal: 201 feet at mean high tide.
Maximum height: 384 feet.
Weight of steel in Bridge: 16,975 tons.
Maximum depth of piers: 70 feet below mean high tide.
Cost, including approaches: $20 million.
The significance of the bridge lies in its unique symbolism as a uniting element between peoples, countries, and continents.
