Abstract:
The libraries of the University of Florida form the largest information resource system in the state of Florida and includes seven libraries. Six are in the system known as the George A.Smathers Libraries, and one, the Legal Information Center, is attached to the law school’s administrative unit. All of the libraries serve the entire community, and each has a special mission to be the primary support of specific colleges and degree programs. This brochure describes each of the Libraries.

en-US1en-US 1 The libraries of the University of Florida form the en-US largest en-US information resource system in the state of Florida and includes en-US seven libraries. All of the libraries en-US serve the entire community, and each has a special mission to be en-US the primary support of specific colleges and degree programs. en-US Because of the interdisciplinary nature of research, en-US scholars may en-US find collections built in one library to serve a specific discipline en-US or constituency to be of great importance to their own research. en-US The University of Florida Gator 1 card provides access to library en-US services. Each of the libraries provides research assistance, en-US computer workstations, printers, iPad checkout and services to en-US help students and faculty with disabilities. Most provide scanners. en-US Imaging software varies with the locations.en-US The Libraries home page (en-US http://www.uflib.ufl.eduen-US) offers a en-US wealth of information about the Libraries and links to a vast array en-US of resources. The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library. en-US– ALBERT EINSTEINen-USLibrary West

en-USThe Libraries of the University of Floridaen-USLibrary West en-UShouses most of the humanities and social science en-US collections; professional collections in en-US support of business, health and en-US human performance, journalism and communications; the African Studies en-US Collection; and most of the en-US Isser and Rae Price Library of Judaica. The en-US sixth floor is reserved for graduate students. There are also graduate en-US student/faculty study en-US carrels. Eighteen study rooms can be checked en-US out for group study. The Scott Nygren Scholars Studio is an emerging en-US community center for digital humanities and digital scholarship. The en-US One Button Video Recording Studio is available for faculty and student en-US checkout. Six ProctorU testing carrels are available by reservation. en-US Library West also has a Tutoring Center, Accessibility Studio, KIC en-US Bookeye high speed scanner and FitDesk study bikes. A lactation room en-US and gender-neutral restroom are located on the second floor. en-US The en-USMarston Science Library (MSL)en-US houses collections in agriculture, en-US life sciences, engineering, physical sciences, mathematics and en-US earth sciences. The first floor Collaboration Commons has 21 group en-US study rooms and a multipurpose conference room featuring a multi-en-US touch visualization wall. The first floor is also home to MADE@UF, a en-US collaboration space created by the Libraries and Academic Technology en-US with equipment, software and training for virtual reality and augmented en-US reality applications. A 3D printing lab is located on the second floor and en-US includes 3D scanners and printers available for lending. A makerspace en-US is also located on the second floor. A lactation room is located on the en-US third floor. en-US The en-USHealth Science Center Libraries (HSCL)en-US serve the academic, Marston Science Library Collaboration Commons

3en-US research and clinical information needs of the Colleges of Dentistry, en-US Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Health Professions, en-US and Veterinary Medicine, as well as the affiliated research institutes, en-US hospitals and clinics. The Health Science Center Library serves en-US UF Health Gainesville, and the Borland Library serves UF Health en-US Jacksonville. The HSCL also supports the Veterinary Medicine en-US Education Center in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The HSCL has en-US a long-standing Liaison Librarian program that facilitates partnerships en-US with academic faculty, researchers and clinicians by assigning one or en-US more dedicated librarians to each HSC college or department.en-US The Health Science Center Library features a new Biomedical en-US Information Teaching Space (BITS) designed for active learning with en-US technology. Energy Pods on the second floor help students relax and en-US recharge. 3D printing and scanning are available as are individual and en-US group study rooms.en-US The en-USEducation Library en-USholds education, child development, higher en-US education, school psychology and school counseling collections. In en-US addition to electronic and print research materials, there are other en-US specialized collections such as the Children’s and Young Adult en-US Literature Collection and the K-12 Textbook Collection. 3D printing and en-US a KIC Bookeye high speed scanner are available. Seven group study en-US rooms are available for check-out. A makerspace includes die cuts for en-US students to create visual learning aids for K-12 education. en-USThe en-USArchitecture & Fine Arts (AFA) Libraryen-US holds research materials en-US in architecture, art, art history, historic preservation, interior design, en-US landscape architecture, museum studies and music, with key resources en-US for building construction and urban & regional planning. In addition en-US to bound volumes (books, journals, musical scores), the library holds en-US over 12,000 sound and video recordings. Special equipment available en-US to users includes multi-format audio listening equipment, scanners en-US for documents up to 18”x24” and a 3D scanner. Tripods, small video en-US cameras and digital projectors are available for checkout. The library’s en-US mid-century interior, with its 20-ft. high ceiling reading room and double-en-US decker carrels make it a popular destination for quiet study.en-US The en-USSmathers Library en-USholds the Latin American and Caribbean en-US Collection and Reading Room, the Map & Imagery Library and a small en-US study area, the Grand Reading Room with the Judaica Suite and the en-US Special Collections: Baldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature, en-US P. K. Yonge Library of Florida History, Archives and Manuscripts, en-US Popular Culture Collections, Rare Books and the University Archives. en-US Although not a part of the George A. Smathers Libraries, the en-US Lawton en-US Chiles Legal Information Center en-USholds resources for law and related en-US social sciences and is open for use by the entire University community. 5en-USSpecial and Area Studies Collectionsen-USThe en-USLatin American and Caribbean Collectionen-US traces its depth en-US and breadth of print holdings to the 1950s and to close ties between en-US the Libraries and the University’s renowned Center for Latin America en-US Studies. Caribbean manuscripts are a special collection strength. The en-US collection is housed on the third floor of the Smathers Library en-US and en-US features a large reading room for study.en-US The en-USIsser and Rae Price Judaica Library en-USholds internationally en-US distinctive Judaica from the 19th and 20th centuries, with exceptionally en-US rare ephemera, festschriften and periodicals forming the foremost en-US Jewish Studies research collection in the southeastern United States. en-US The collection is largely located on the first floor of Library West with en-US rare and semi-rare materials located in the Judaica Suite in Smathers en-US Library on the second floor.en-US The en-USBaldwin Library of Historical Children’s Literature en-USis the largest en-US collection of Anglo-American children’s literature in the world, with en-US books and periodicals published in the United States and Great Britain en-US from the mid-1600s to present day. Many show signs of readership and en-US use by children opening up research avenues beyond textual analysis.en-US Theen-US Florida History Collection en-USis comprised of the P.K. Yonge en-US Library en-US of Florida History, as well as manuscripts, archives and maps from en-US other en-UScollections. The en-US P.K. Yonge Library en-US documents the en-US history of en-US what is now Florida through colonial records, primary sources related en-US to the early statehood era, notable ephemera collections and extensive en-US historical newspaper holdings. en-USThe en-USMap & Imagery Libraryen-US en-USis one of the largest academic map en-US libraries in the United States and holds approximately 500,000 maps, en-US 300,000 aerial photographs and satellite images, 8,000 atlases and en-US reference books, as well as a growing number of geospatial datasets. en-US Specialties include Florida, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. en-US The en-USArchives and Manuscripts Collection en-USincludes the following:en-US en-US Architecture Archives –en-US focus on architects of Florida and the en-US Caribbean; en-USCaribbean Manuscripts – en-USmanuscripts on Cuban and en-US Haitian history; en-US Florida Manuscripts –en-US papers of major literary and en-US political figures associated with the state; en-US Literary Manuscripts – en-USfocus en-US on Florida authors and include the state’s most lauded novelists, both en-US historic and more recent.en-US The en-USUniversity of Florida Archivesen-US preserves the University’s most en-US significant administrative records and documents the diverse student en-US life, its achievements in inter-collegiate sports and its contributions to en-US applied and theoretical research. The Archives serves as a museum en-US for campus memorability, sound, film and video recordings and tens of en-US thousands of historical images.en-US Ten-UShe en-USPanama and the Canal Collectionen-US models the integration of a en-US community museum with an academic library, building on the Center en-US of Excellence for government documents related to the Panama Canal en-US Zone and other Panama holdings. The Albert H. Nahmad Panama en-US Canal Gallery, located on the first floor of the Smathers Library, displays en-US artifacts from the Panama Canal Museum Collection documenting the en-US U.S. experience in the Panama Canal Zone. 7 University of Florida Digital Collections en-USSince 1999 the George A. Smathers Libraries have been providing free en-US and global access to digital resources through the University of Florida en-US Digital Collections (UFDC) – en-UShttp://ufdc.ufl.eduen-US. The UFDC hosts more en-US than 300 outstanding digital collections, covering more than 78,000 en-US subjects, and averaging more than 100,000 image additions per month.en-US One of the largest collections, with over 202,000 items, is the Digital en-US Library of the Caribbean (dLOC), a cooperative digital library for en-US resources from and about the Caribbean and circum-Caribbean. dLOC en-US also supports collaborative project development and funding initiatives en-US for partners, including the Protecting Haitian Patrimony Initiative.en-US Also included in the UFDC is the Institutional Repository at the University en-US of Florida (IR@UF) – en-UShttp://ufdc.ufl.edu/iren-US – the digital archive for the en-US intellectual output of the University of Florida community, and includes en-US research, news, outreach and educational materials. Currently there are en-US over 32,000 theses and dissertations deposited in the IR.en-US The Libraries began digitizing Florida newspapers in 2005, and en-US today holds over 700 historic newspaper titles while also serving as en-US a depository for current issues of more than 130 newspapers and en-US periodicals loaded monthly. The Libraries received expanded funding en-US in 2017 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize en-US in excess of 100,000 pages of historic newspapers.
