The annual Michael Gannon en-US Lecture commemorates the achievements and scholarship en-US of Dr. Gannon, Distinguished Service Professor, en-US remembered at the University of Florida as an outstanding en-US teacher and scholar, an advocate for fairness and academic en-US integrity, and a nationally known writer on Florida history en-US and the history of World War II.en-US Gannon’s career encompassed work as a broadcaster and en-US author, a priest in the Catholic Church, a professor of en-US religion, ethics and history, and a leader in promoting the en-US history of Florida to both academics and the public. For over a year, many have en-US worked fully or partially remotely en-US and yet even though physically en-US separated, managed to work together en-US to accomplish our goals and creatively en-US serve the UF community. We have en-US come through the last 14 months en-US stronger and wiser, producing results en-US of which everyone can be proud.en-US As we begin coming back to campus en-US for the Summer B semester, we will en-US continue to build on our strengths en-US and accomplishments. The 40th en-US anniversary of the Isser and Rae en-US Price Library of Judaica (see next en-US page), was held virtually, and I hope en-US you have the time to watch the video en-US of the presentation. en-US6en-US NEWS FROM THE SOURCEen-USSpring Rutherford Student Assistant Scholarship Winneren-USArlette Garcia, a second-year en-US journalism major from Miami, en-US Florida, won the Rutherford Student en-US Assistant Scholarship for the spring en-US semester. Arlette works in the Latin en-US American and Caribbean Collection. en-US The scholarship is awarded each spring en-US and fall semesters to one student en-US assistant based on a submitted essay.en-US Arlette’s winning essay read in part:en-US “To improve student success at UF, en-US I believe the libraries should focus en-US on partnering with local community en-US organizations and focusing on en-US community engagement. While this en-US may not seem like the clearest route to en-US student success, I believe it would play en-US a huge role in students’ lives during en-US their time in higher education. Since en-US many of UF’s students are from different en-US parts of Florida or around the world, en-US they often see Gainesville as a place en-US where they simply learn and then leave en-US after four years. Rather than interact en-US with the local community that truly en-US calls Gainesville home, they are stuck en-US within the “UF bubble.” I believe en-US that such a change would greatly help en-US underrepresented student communities, en-US such as undocumented, BIPOC, en-US disabled, or LGBTQ+ folks, who may en-US find it harder to find safe spaces during en-US their transition to college.” en-USSmathers Online Business Library: en-US en-US The UF Entrepreneur’s Best Frienden en-USBy Peter Z. McKay, Business Librarianen-USEach year Warrington College of Business’s en-US Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation en-US sponsors the en-USBig Idea Gator Business Plan en-US Competitionen-US . Hundreds of teams compete for en-US the prizes. The Business Library’s databases en-US and other resources play an essential role in en-US researching and writing the industry and en-US en-US market sections of the business plans. en-US This year’s $25,000 first prize winner was Sheldon Barrett, founder and en-US president of Cocovana. Cocovana’s first product is the en-USCoconut Twisten-US . The en-US Coconut Twisten-US allows anyone to safely open the thick husk of green coconuts en-US in seconds without creating a mess, much like a corkscrew, but for coconuts. en-US It replaces the machete as the best tool for opening green coconuts, to obtain en-US the rich, fresh coconut water. A physician prescribed fresh coconut water to en-US Sheldon to help control a bout of high blood pressure. He began searching for a en-US better way to open them. Thus, the en-USCoconut Twisten-US was born.en-US Sheldon says, “Utilizing the UF online Business Library was critical to my en-US success in winning the 2020 Big Idea Competition. With the help of business en-US librarian Mr. Peter McKay, we were able to quickly find the correct report en-US for my company’s business plan Industry Section. Because this was the first en-US section of my plan, completing it was my first ‘win,’ which I used as motivation en-US to complete the rest of my business plan. All this information obtained from en-US the UF online business databases helped me deliver one of the most polished en-US business plans and presentations in UF Big Idea history.” en-USPeter McKay and Sheldon en-US Barrett en-USGATOR NATION GIVING en-US DAY 2 The Gator Nation third annual en-USGiving Day raised a record amount en-US of funds for the Libraries. 7 en-USNEWS FROM THE SOURCEen-USMESSAGE FROM THE LIBRARY LEADERSHIP BOARD CHAIRen-USOn April 13, 2021, the renowned en-US speaker and writer, Jon Meacham, en-US spoke in person in the Grand en-US Reading Room. This was the first en-US in the Michael Gannon lecture en-US series. Dr. Gannon was a memorable en-US professor, and I took his spellbinding en-US comparative religion course in 1976. en-US Look for more upcoming live and en-US virtual lectures. en-USYou can find library news, highlights, en-US social media and publications at en-US https://communications.uflib.ufl.eduen-US . en-US That site will provide hours of en-US interest and fun. Just try it with your en-US family and inspire discussion. en-US Please let me or the library staff en-US know of any Family Foundations en-US that may be interesting in supporting en-US the Smathers Libraries. And keep in en-USmind the Books of en-US Honor program to en-US acknowledge life en-US events with a gift en-US and bookplate. I en-US look forward to en-US hearing from you, en-US (904) 465-1724 or en-US en-US e-mail en-USmprice@pricerealestate.landen-US . Michael Price en-US en-US Chair, Library en-US Leadership Board en-USSamuel Price Remembereden-USWe are deeply saddened en-US to share the news that en-US Samuel Price, one of en-US the Isser and Rae Price en-US Library of Judaica’s major en-US benefactors, passed away en-US on January 23, 2021. en-US Samuel and his brother en-US Jack, both University of en-US Florida alumni, endowed en-US the Judaica Library, which was formally dedicated in en-US March 1981 in honor of their parents. en-US After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Sam en-US went on to develop a highly successful career as a real en-US estate developer. With his exuberant zest for life, he en-US regularly traveled around the world, making friends en-US wherever he stayed. Sam also became a collector in his en-US own right, purchasing artwork, objects and books from en-US every place he visited. He delighted in finding rare en-US books for the Judaica Library. Among the wonderful en-US pieces he found was an 18th-century rabbinic work en-US from London that had been buried during the en-US Holocaust to keep it from being seized or destroyed en-US and a set of Sephardi Jewish prayerbooks printed in en-US Constantinople. en-US According to his daughter, Ellice Berg, Sam loved the en-US Library in a manner akin to the love a father bears a en-US child: “He nurtured it and kept it close to his heart.” en-US Indeed, he often shared with his family his fervent en-US hope that it would one day become one of the top en-US collections in the country. As we continue to strive en-US toward that goal, his warm and enthusiastic support en-US will be sorely missed.en-USRobert Egolf Remembered en-USDr. Robert Egolf, long-time en-US en-US friend to the Smathers en-US en-US Libraries’ Baldwin Library en-US en-US of Historical Children’s en-US en-US Literature, passed away on en-US en-US December 29, 2020. Dr. Egolf’s en-US en-US gift of 19thand 20th-century children’s books in en-US 2007 was the most significant gift to the Baldwin en-US collection since the original donation in 1977 by its en-US founder Ruth Baldwin. en-US The Egolf collection, containing 2,800 books in en-US pristine condition with many first editions, moved en-US the Baldwin toward a higher level of excellence en-US as a research archive. The Baldwin Library of en-US Historical Children’s Literature contains more en-US than 120,000 volumes published in Great Britain en-US and the United States from the mid 1600s through en-US 2007. In March 2010, Dr. Egolf established the Dr. en-US Robert L. Egolf Library Endowment to provide en-US for the acquisition, processing and digitization en-US of additional books to enhance the collection. en-US Selected books in the Egolf collection have been en-US digitized and are at en-UShttps://ufdc.ufl.edu/juven-US . en-US Dr. Egolf donated a second collection of books to en-US the Libraries in November 2020, including 572 en-US books on religion and the history of science as well en-US as 434 children’s. He also donated two brass frog en-US bookends, the inspiration for his interest in collecting en-US children’s books. He saw the frogs in a bookstore en-US and thought it would be a “clever idea to have some en-US children’s books between those bookends.”

Beginning in March 2020, Randell en-US played an integral role on a campus-wide team of engineers and en-US fabrication facilities, led by Associate Dean Forrest Masters in the College of en-US Engineering. Randell became their go-to 3D modeler, to develop and 3D print en-US customized models, including masks and respirators for UF Health Shands en-US anesthesiologists.en-US His most significant contribution was collaborating with others to design and en-US print the nasal swabs used in UF’s COVID-19 testing. UF Health could not en-US procure enough swabs to test all campus employees so Randell was asked to en-US evaluate a 3D printed swab model being developed at the University of South en-US Florida. He iteratively modified the 3D digital model to meet UF Health’s en-US specifications that it had to be a certain length and diameter for the swab shaft en-US to snap cleanly in the available tubes.en-US Once UF Health physicians approved the model, he then was part of a small en-US team that fabricated the thousands of swabs at Exactech’s manufacturing en-US facility in Alachua, Florida. Randell learned how to operate a resin 3D printer en-US (this is very different from the Libraries’ plastic 3D printers) and completed en-US Exactech’s training to ensure that the swabs were produced in a completely en-US sterile and clean environment. Randell and the team spent long days at the en-US facility in order to produce enough swabs for the campus testing. en-USIf you haven’t seen the en-USNews from the Sourceen-US ’s sister digital publication en-US Source en-USMagazine, en-US you can read it here: en-UShttps://ufdc.ufl.edu/sourceen-US . The next issue will publish in August. Randell was awarded a UF Division 3 en-USSuperior Accomplishment Award last en-US fall for his innovation and initiative en-US to develop and produce protective en-US equipment for the Libraries, UF en-US researchers, UF Health Shands, VA en-US and North Florida Regional Medical en-US Center hospitals. He also won the en-US Innovation Award from the Libraries en-US in October 2020. en-USSPOTLIGHT:en-US RANDELL DUGGINSen-US en-USR
