SMATHERS LIBRARIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA T en-UShe University of Florida will soon en-US make available to UF classes, en-US researchers and the general public en-US the Bob Hope Collection, which en-US documents the entertainer’s 80-year en-US career spanning global wars, social en-US change and celebrity culture during en-US the 20th century. The Bob Hope en-US Collection will become part of the en-US Popular Culture Collections in the en-US Special and Area Studies Collections en-US through a gift by the Bob & Dolores en-US Hope Foundation of Burbank, en-US California.en-US The Bob Hope Collection features en-US an array of scrapbooks, photographs, en-US documents, posters, stage costumes, en-US awards, artifacts and one-of-a kind en-US memorabilia from the event-filled en-US life and colorful performing career en-US of an iconic American 20th-century en-US show business figure. Access to the en-US materials for research, teaching and en-US exhibitions will generate a better en-US understanding of broadcast media en-US and the role of entertainment figures en-US as shapers of culture in larger society.en-US Over his career, Hope left an indelible en-US mark on the entertainment industry en-US through his work in vaudeville, en-US Broadway theatre, radio, television, en-US recording and film. His career grew en-US from local vaudeville to the global en-US stage, lasting for eight of the ten en-US decades that he lived. Over a long en-US career, he became a leading en-US comedian, commentator on en-US American life and times, TV en-US and film star, humanitarian en-US and friend to 11 Presidents. en-US In support of the troops, Hope en-US entertained active duty personnel en-US in war zones for half a century, en-US from 1941 to 1991. He was en-US awarded the Congressional en-US Gold Medal in 1963 and the en-US Presidential Medal of Freedom en-US in 1969.
