Project Starters: http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/ps_db.html This link is good to have for any projects you might work on in your various classes. If you are is a great tool. It links to a few important databases with explanations of what they give you access to These include G enera l databases, mostly for scholarly articles, Hot Topics da tabases, and News and Newspapers databases which are very useful if you are looking for information that was published in the press, either recently or in the past (including the deep past!) Lastly it links to OneSearch, which searches all of our collections though you can also access this from II. Important D atabases Another feature o f the research guide is a tab linking to databases that will be very useful for your Spanish classes.
a. MLA International Bibliography This database provides comprehensive coverage of literary criticism for literature worldwide. There are many ways for you to custom ize your search. Do you want a book or a journal article ? Are you searching for a keyword, a title, an author? In which language? any and all digital resource (Please note: Find it @UF only looks for online / digital resources so for books or journals that only exist in physical format [i.e. non eBooks and non online journals ] you will have to search the catalog for this item using its title or ISBN /ISSN ) If we request it through ILLIAD or UBorrow.
If UF does not have you can submit an Interlibrary Loan request (see image 2) you then have three pickup location options: Main Campus, Health Science C enter Libra ry or Legal Information Center Once you select your pickup place and login to ILLIAD (The Interlibrary Loan Service), the database will populate the form with all the information needed to request the loan. At that point, a ll you have to do is send the request. b. WorldCa t There are two links to WorldCat on the Spanish Studies research guide : FirstSearch and Worldcat Discovery. Apparently FirstSearch is poised to disappear working well Just use the one whose interface you prefer. With both of them, as with the MLA databas e, the database will tell you if the document you need is owned by UF In the case of WorldCat FirstSearch, a little icon will let you know if the item is owned by U F If you click on it, it will directly take you to n it, you can click to request it through ILLIAD. ILLIAD In this case we do have the book but I had to search for it using its ISBN.
With WorldCat Discovery, the first results of the search include only those items owned by UF. If what you want is not at UF, you have two options: Option 2 Option 1
1. Y ou can which will check whether UF can access the resource you want in an online / digital format worry! O n the same page you can submit a resource request through ILLIAD As with MLA, the request form will be automatically filled out for you. 2. Y Often, you will find a link to UBorrow here, which gives you access to resources at other libraries in Florida. (If you do not see this link, it means that the item is not available at Florida libraries, and will need to be requested via ILLIAD.) Why choose UBorrow over ILLIAD? UBorrow can b e faster than ILLIAD because requested items have to travel as far. For information on how to borrow books through UBorrow look on the first page of the research guide. All you need to do is sign in with your myUFL usern ame and password, select a pick up location and place your request.
c. Hispanic American Periodicals Index ( HAPI ) HAPI searches give users several options. In some instances, i t allows you to see if UF owns or has access to the journal where an article is published ( Find it @UF ). In other instances, however, it direct s users to the j website to Google Scholar or to JSTOR (another database). Please note: in some cases, you may only be able to read the beginning of the article because subscription does not include a specific journal or issue. If that happens, request the article through ILLIAD (either fill out the form yourself, or access the filled out form They will send you a PDF copy of the requested resource
