Abstract: Join with the UF community to “organize before they rise.” Prepare yourself (and UF’s Campus) for the impending zombie apocalypse by reading Max Brooks’ popular fiction Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z. This Honors Department course, planned for Fall 2011, will use the affinity culture surrounding zombie literature as a cultural activator to teach New Media Literacies (Jenkins 2006) and 21st Century Skills (P21.org). Students will be actively engaged in participatory culture activities including forming affiliations, designing creative expressions (digital projects), collaborating in collective problem solving teams, and developing circulations (web-based publications like a survival wiki and survivor blogs). Assignments will challenge honors students to explore the worlds that Brooks has created in his popular Zombie fiction and to apply real world concepts to local UF contexts. Students will also explore other zombie media (movies, games, comics) and evaluate/ analyze these in relation to the works we study in class.
