Esso Lago Oil & Transport Co., Ltd. Araba, Netherlands Antilles MEW VOL. 33 No. 18 September 8, 1972 Machinery Alignment Course Improves Work Efficiency, Machine Reliability Job training at Lago is a ne- ver ending activity. One of the fields in which this training is now progressing is on mach- inery alignment. The first group of eight men to complete the Machinery Alignment Course on August 18 included: Cecil Al- berto, At Connor, Rufo de Mey, Dominico Henriquez, Ramon Hodge, George Lambrinos, Ro- bert van Balen, and Jantje Wer- leman. The course certificates were presented by Acting Mech- anical M&C Division Superinten- dent Harmon Quarles. Instructor was Malcolm Murray of Mech- anical Engineering Division who also developed the course. Ul- timately, it is intended to give this training to approximately 60 men from M&C and Engineering, including several machinery- oriented supervisors. In teaching the course, In- structor Murray explained that most machines have two parts - a driver (which can be an electric motor, steam turbine, etc.) and a driven element (a pump, blower, etc.). The shafts of these two elements are join- ed by a flexible coupling. Ma- chine alignment is the proce- dure whereby these machine (Continued on page 4) rrll~c The second Machinery Alignment class in the Mechanical Shops training center, from left to right: (E segundo klas di ahustamento di maquinaria den centro di training dl Mechanical Shops, r pa d): Assistant Instructor Rufo de Mey, Rey Franken, Instructor Malcolm Murray (taking vibration reading on misalignment effect demon- strator), Leandro Tromp, Mario Kelly, George Brown, Tony Briesum, Dominico Leest, and Patrick Brown. Machinery Alignment Program Improves Work Efficiency (Continued from page 1) elements are adjusted vertically and horizontally so that both shafts are precisely in line. Failure to have precise align- ment (within a few thousandths of an inch) can cause excessive vibration and wear, with prema- ture failure of the machine. Pre- cise alignment is becoming more and more important be- cause of the trend to higher- speed machines which are more sensitive to misalignment fail- ures. With some 2000 machines in the refinery and an average of 500 alignments per year, the resulting maintenance and pro- cess curtailment costs, due to inefficient and imprecise align- ment, may be considerable. To improve the situation, Mal- colm came up with a four-point plan: 1. Utilize outside consultants for complex alignment jobs, with rotating equipment en- gineers receiving training from such consultants during these jobs so they can do similar work themselves in the future. 2. Acquire more and better alignment tools, and devise a way to make them readily available when and where needed. 3. Develop better alignment me- thods for improved precision and efficiency. 4. Train Lago's men to effect- ively use the improved tools and methods. A consultant was engaged to perform optical alignment and thermal growth analyses on se- veral complex machinery trains during HDS-I construction and startup. Lago's Rotating Equip- ment Engineers Charles Mian- nay and Al Connor acquired training from this consultant. They then obtained the required optical instruments and have since used them for alignment of several multi-element mach- inery trains. To prepare for the course, Malcolm made a study of align- ment tools and methods used at Lago and elsewhere. After en- gaging in a variety of field align- ment jobs, he developed a "plotting board", which is a graphical calculator for quickly determining alignment correct- ive movements an improve- ment over earlier trial-and-error methods. He also invented a machinery positioning device which makes precise alignment adjustment easy and eliminates the need for jackscrews and sledgehammers. Arrangements are under way for patenting both inventions. The three-week course pre- pared by Malcolm covers two to three hours of classroom in- struction every afternoon plus one all-day field alignment pro- blem. The classroom work in- cludes theory, demonstrations and practice alignments. For the latter, a "simulator" is used which permits the students to make rapid alignment on a two- part model. This has several ad- vantages over practicing in the field: no machine shutdown, no work permit, no preliminary cleanup or coupling disassembly, no distracting influences such as noise, dirt, or heat. "Compared with several com- mercially available alignment courses and judging by recent technical articles on the sub- ject, we appear to be ahead of or equal to the industry", says Instructor Murray. "Furthermore, our men are enthusiastic about the improved tools and methods, and have already used them successfully on several jobs." The second group includes: Tony ariesum, George Brown, Patrick Brown, Rey Franken, Mario Kelly, Dominico Leest and Leandro Tromp. Y finalmente, intencion ta di duna e entrenamento aki na como 60 homber di M&C y di Ingenieria, inclusive various supervisor cu nan trabao ta orienta cu mashin. As di e dos element ta uni pa medio di un parti flexible cu ta acopla as keda exactamente den linja.
