% On behalf of the Lago manage-
% ment, | wish to extend Season’s
% Greetings to all our employees
% and annuitants, their families and

triends.

: We may look back to a year of great accomplishments
% in various fields. One of our most important achievements
% was the successful completion and startup of the Hydro-
% desulfurization complex. The HDS startup has been rated
% as outstanding when compared to other startups in Jer-
% sey this rating is a real tribute to the fine job that was
% done by all of those involved.

% We continued with our outstanding safety record, again
% maintaining one of the lowest accident rates in Jersey.
% This accomplishment has been recognized by the Ameri-
*. can Petroleum Institute. This institute has awarded three
% Accident Prevention Awards to our company, the most
8 recent one for working more than 2.1 million injury-free
% manhours from October 1970 to July 1971. Our Mainte-
% nance & Construction Division personnel also reached a
5 milestone by breaking the world-wide Jersey safety record
% of 2.2 million manhours with no disabling injury.

% We also made progress in modernizing our facilities.

% Four new visbreaker furnaces were completed; facilities

3? were added to improve fractionation at Nos. 9 and 10

x pipestills; and the old acid treating plant was replaced
with new hydrofiners.

% To provide motorists with another facility, Esso Market-
% ing provided dispensing and tankage equipment for the
% new Savaneta Esso Servicenter which was opened in
3» November. Esso Marketing also contributed to motoring
% safety throughout the year through a monthly safety
slogan contest.

% As in every industry, Lago had to cope with a few pro-
% blems as well. A labor conflict that developed in March
% was resolved peacefully. After hurricane ’Edith” caused
% a complete power failure in the refinery in September, our
% Process employees brought down all the units without a
% mishap and put them back on stream after the Mechanical
% and Technical men did their share of the work.

y Also the petroleum industry was generally in an over-
% supply situation during 1971, and Lago was no exception
% as we operated at about 80°/o of capacity.

% During 1971 there were many changes in the product
% requirements of the market which we serve, and we can
% expect more changes in the future. However, with our
% excellent business climate and with the cooperation and
% continuing fine contribution of our employees, we can
% face the current and future changes with confidence.

~ We wish each of you and your family a joyous Christ-
% mas and a healthy and prosperous 1972.

empleadonan y _ pensionistanan,
nan familia y amigonan.

mento y startmento di e plantanan di desulfurisacion. E %
saliente, compara cu otro casonan di start planta nobo
den Jersey, y e ta un tributo real pa un trabao bon haci
door di tur cu a coopera den su realizacion.

mas abao di desgracia den organisacion di Jersey. E
logro ey a keda reconoci door di Instituto Americano di
Petroleo. E instituto ey a otorga tres premio di Prevencion
desgracia, for di October 1970 te Juli 1971.
citante. Nos a nota progreso tambe den modernizacion
di nos facilidadnan di refinacion. Cuater fogon nobo pa
visbreakernan a bini cla; facilidadnan pa mihor fracciona-
planta bieuw di tratamento cu acido a keda reemplaza
door di hydrofinernan nobo. Pa duna trafico motoriza un
facilidad mas, Esso Marketing a pone tanki y facilidad-
nan di pomp na e Esso Servicenter na Savaneta, cu a
habri na November. Esso Marketing a contribui tambe na
seguridad den trafico motoriza, door di un concurso men-
sual pa seguridad den trafico.

Manera ta pasa den industria, Lago mester a enfrenta
algun problema tambe. Un conflicto laboral cu a presenta
na luna di Maart a keda soluciona pacificamente. Despues
cu e horcan "Edith” a causa fayo completo di electricidad
a baha tur plantanan sin ningun mal acontecimento, y nan
a bolbe pone nan na funcion despues cu trahadornan di
Mechanical y Technical a presta nan parti di trabao nece-
sario.

cial cu ta excelente, y cu cooperacion y bon contribucion

The tenth winner in this year's

YMCA President F. Loonstra (left) accepts Lago’s donation from

Vice President L. Johnston, in the presence of (I to r) S. Tjaarda

(YMCA program secretary), J. Guastavino (secretary), B. S. Whitney

(treasurer), Lago’s PR/IR Manager B. E. Nixon, and Robert P.
Steele (YMCA board member).

Lago Donation Helps YMCA Keep Up
With Growing Needs of Aruban Youth

A Lago donation to the YMCA
was presented recently by the

company's vice-president, Mr.
L Johnston, at the Y’s head-
quarters in San Nicolas. Ac-

cepting on behalf of the youth
organization was its president,
Mr F. Loonstra.

Praising the work of the
YMCA in Aruba, Mr. Johnston
said: "What the YMCA has ac-
complished for the island’s
youth truly deserves the recog-
nition from all sectors of the
community. It pleases us indeed
to be able to assist the YMCA
in its good work and to keep up
with the growing needs of the
Aruban youth.”

Besides Lago, the YMCA re-
ceived donations from 785 do-
nors during their 1971 Fund
Drive. The proceeds will help
cover the organization’s operat-
ing expenses related to its cha-

racter building and leadership
training programs.
Another Lago representative

Present at the brief ceremony
was Public & Industrial Rela-
tions Manager B. E. Nixon.

Messrs. J. Guastavino and B.
S. Whitney, Secretary-General
and Treasurer, respectively of
the YMCA, and Mr. R. P. Steele,
board member also witnessed
the ceremony. Also _ present
was the new program secretary
of the YMCA, Mr. S. Tjaarda.

In recognition of the Y’s con-
tribution to the community, La-
go, early this year, transferred
the building in which the YMCA
is housed to the youth organi-
zation. Recently, the YMCA
board installed a plaque in the
building which reads: "Dedicat-
ed To The Youth Of Aruba On
The Occasion Of The YMCA's
Fifteenth Anniversary In Aruba
on April 27, 1971. Lago Oil &
Transport Company, Ltd.”

Aruba’s YMCA operates two
branches, one in San Nicolas
and one in Oranjestad. Activities
offered at these centers are de-
signed to teach the youth and
adolescents how to make more
constructive use of their leisure
time by means of sports, hob-
bies, artistic and cultural devel-
opments.

Take Precautions, Follow Some Hints, and Enjoy Safe Holidays at Home

Every year we read and hear
warnings about Christmas fires.
We hardly notice them — after
all we're thinking of more plea-
sant things. But some reminders
may help us enjoy a_ safe
Christmas.

Christmas Safety
Begins with the Tree

Evergreens are highly flam-
mable when they begin to dry
out. Within seconds, one spark
can transform a Christmas tree
into a roaring, explosive mass
of flames. The water you give
to your tree not only keeps it

fresh — it adds to your safety.
Keep the tree’s moisture con-
tent high.

Here are some suggestions
of the National Safety Council,
(1) Don’t put lighted candles
on the tree - don’t place
tree near heat-giving dev-
ices, like a TV set.

(2) Don't place tree near any
furnishings which might
help a fire spread.

(3) Don’t place tree where it
might trap occupants of a
room or building.

(4) Don't leave lights burning
on tree when you retire or

go out.
(5) Don't leave paper wrap-
pings lying around after

gifts have been opened.

(6) In case of fire, let some
one call the closest Fire
Department immediately:
Lago - 2222; Government
Fire Department - 00, and
try to combat the fire at
once.

Fireproof Ornaments Are Better

Incombustible materials are
recommended for decorations.
Ornaments of fireproof materials
such as metal, glass, and rock
wool are easy to purchase or
to make at home.

If you want fabric trimming
around tree base, it’s best to
use a material which has been
treated with a fire retardant.

You can buy fabric that's al-
ready treated or treat it your-
self. One fire-retardant mixture
is: 9 ounces of borax and 4
ounces of boric acid in 1 gal-
lon of water. Dip, brush, or
spray the fabric. Be sure to cover
the surface thoroughly. But re-
member, "fire retardant’ doesn't
mean it's fireproof.”

Inside Lighting Tips

In planning tree lighting,
avoid overloaded circuits. Strings
of lights take little power, but
they may overload a circuit.

Don’t use frayed cords. When
you buy new light strings or any
other electrical equipment, make
sure it has the Underwriter’s
Laboratories seal.

Before putting the lights on
the tree, stretch each string on
the floor and inspect it for
loose wires at the sockets.
Screw all bulbs firmly in sock-
ets, plug the string into an out-
let, make sure that all bulbs
light.

Flood lamps get very hot.
Keep them away from fabrics
and place them where they can-
not be reached by children and
pets. Check circuit for over-
loading.

Use Correct Bulbs and Cord
For Outdoor Lighting

For outdoor lighting, don’t
place lamps too near trees,
shrubs, or wooden walls or

fences. Use waterproof electric
cords and sockets, and lamps
which will not be cracked by
wetting when they are hot.
Don’t use indoor strings of
lights outside. Outdoor strings
have rubber or synthetic rings
around each lamp to keep wa-
ter out of the sockets. The
lamps do not break easily and
usually burn independently. If
you need an .extension cord,
use the outdoor (heavy rubber-
covered) type. Tape all connec-

tions with electrician’s rubber
tape.

% On behalf of the Lago manage-

% a complete power failure in the refinery in September, our
% Process employees brought down all the units without a
% mishap and put them back on stream after the Mechanical

y Also the petroleum industry was generally in an over-
% supply situation during 1971, and Lago was no exception
% as we operated at about 80°/o of capacity.

% During 1971 there were many changes in the product

mento y startmento di e plantanan di desulfurisacion. E %
saliente, compara cu otro casonan di start planta nobo
den Jersey, y e ta un tributo real pa un trabao bon haci
door di tur cu a coopera den su realizacion.

mas abao di desgracia den organisacion di Jersey. E
logro ey a keda reconoci door di Instituto Americano di
Petroleo. E instituto ey a otorga tres premio di Prevencion
desgracia, for di October 1970 te Juli 1971.
citante. Nos a nota progreso tambe den modernizacion
di nos facilidadnan di refinacion. Cuater fogon nobo pa
visbreakernan a bini cla; facilidadnan pa mihor fracciona-

seguridad den trafico motoriza, door di un concurso men-
sual pa seguridad den trafico.

Manera ta pasa den industria, Lago mester a enfrenta
algun problema tambe. Un conflicto laboral cu a presenta
na luna di Maart a keda soluciona pacificamente. Despues
cu e horcan "Edith” a causa fayo completo di electricidad
a baha tur plantanan sin ningun mal acontecimento, y nan
a bolbe pone nan na funcion despues cu trahadornan di
Mechanical y Technical a presta nan parti di trabao nece-

situacion caminda tabatin demasiado producto den tanki-

Durante 1971 tabatin hopi cambio den exigencianan di

cial cu ta excelente, y cu cooperacion y bon contribucion

Vice President L. Johnston, in the presence of (I to r) S. Tjaarda

(YMCA program secretary), J. Guastavino (secretary), B. S. Whitney

(treasurer), Lago’s PR/IR Manager B. E. Nixon, and Robert P.

Lago Donation Helps YMCA Keep Up
With Growing Needs of Aruban Youth

A Lago donation to the YMCA
was presented recently by the

company's vice-president, Mr.
L Johnston, at the Y’s head-
quarters in San Nicolas. Ac-

cepting on behalf of the youth
organization was its president,
Mr F. Loonstra.

Praising the work of the
YMCA in Aruba, Mr. Johnston
said: "What the YMCA has ac-
complished for the island’s
youth truly deserves the recog-
nition from all sectors of the
community. It pleases us indeed
to be able to assist the YMCA
in its good work and to keep up
with the growing needs of the
Aruban youth.”

Besides Lago, the YMCA re-
ceived donations from 785 do-
nors during their 1971 Fund
Drive. The proceeds will help
cover the organization’s operat-
ing expenses related to its cha-

racter building and leadership
training programs.
Another Lago representative

Present at the brief ceremony
was Public & Industrial Rela-
tions Manager B. E. Nixon.

Messrs. J. Guastavino and B.
S. Whitney, Secretary-General
and Treasurer, respectively of
the YMCA, and Mr. R. P. Steele,
board member also witnessed
the ceremony. Also _ present
was the new program secretary
of the YMCA, Mr. S. Tjaarda.

In recognition of the Y’s con-
tribution to the community, La-
go, early this year, transferred
the building in which the YMCA
is housed to the youth organi-
zation. Recently, the YMCA
board installed a plaque in the
building which reads: "Dedicat-
ed To The Youth Of Aruba On
The Occasion Of The YMCA's
Fifteenth Anniversary In Aruba
on April 27, 1971. Lago Oil &
Transport Company, Ltd.”

Aruba’s YMCA operates two
branches, one in San Nicolas
and one in Oranjestad. Activities
offered at these centers are de-
signed to teach the youth and
adolescents how to make more
constructive use of their leisure
time by means of sports, hob-
bies, artistic and cultural devel-
opments.

Ta consehabel pa usa ador-

pa cumpra of traha adornonan
di material cu no por kima, ma-
nera metal, glass of catuna di
metal.

Si bo kier usa adorno di pan-

anto ta mihor pa usa material
cu a worde trata cu un sub-
stancia cu ta wanta e candela.
Bo por cumpra panja cu ya ta
trata caba of bo por trata e
panja bo mes. Un mezcla cu ta
wanta candela ta: 9 ons di borax
y 4 ons di acido bérico den 1
galon di awa. Doop e panja den
e mezcla, of pasé riba djé cu
kwashi of spuit e. Percura pa

Ora di planea luz pa kerst-

demasiado riba circuitonan di
coriente. Set di luz no ta gasta

No usa wayanan cu ta franja.
Ora Bo cumpra un set nobo di

Take Precautions, Follow Some Hints, and Enjoy Safe Holidays at Home

Every year we read and hear
warnings about Christmas fires.
We hardly notice them — after
all we're thinking of more plea-
sant things. But some reminders
may help us enjoy a_ safe
Christmas.

Christmas Safety
Begins with the Tree

Evergreens are highly flam-
mable when they begin to dry
out. Within seconds, one spark
can transform a Christmas tree
into a roaring, explosive mass
of flames. The water you give
to your tree not only keeps it

fresh — it adds to your safety.
Keep the tree’s moisture con-
tent high.

Here are some suggestions
of the National Safety Council,
(1) Don’t put lighted candles
on the tree - don’t place
tree near heat-giving dev-
ices, like a TV set.

(2) Don't place tree near any
furnishings which might
help a fire spread.

(3) Don’t place tree where it
might trap occupants of a
room or building.

(4) Don't leave lights burning
on tree when you retire or

go out.
(5) Don't leave paper wrap-
pings lying around after

gifts have been opened.

(6) In case of fire, let some
one call the closest Fire
Department immediately:
Lago - 2222; Government
Fire Department - 00, and
try to combat the fire at
once.

Fireproof Ornaments Are Better

Incombustible materials are
recommended for decorations.
Ornaments of fireproof materials
such as metal, glass, and rock
wool are easy to purchase or
to make at home.

If you want fabric trimming
around tree base, it’s best to
use a material which has been
treated with a fire retardant.

You can buy fabric that's al-
ready treated or treat it your-
self. One fire-retardant mixture
is: 9 ounces of borax and 4
ounces of boric acid in 1 gal-
lon of water. Dip, brush, or
spray the fabric. Be sure to cover
the surface thoroughly. But re-
member, "fire retardant’ doesn't
mean it's fireproof.”

Inside Lighting Tips

In planning tree lighting,
avoid overloaded circuits. Strings
of lights take little power, but
they may overload a circuit.

Don’t use frayed cords. When
you buy new light strings or any
other electrical equipment, make
sure it has the Underwriter’s
Laboratories seal.

Before putting the lights on
the tree, stretch each string on
the floor and inspect it for
loose wires at the sockets.
Screw all bulbs firmly in sock-
ets, plug the string into an out-
let, make sure that all bulbs
light.

Flood lamps get very hot.
Keep them away from fabrics
and place them where they can-
not be reached by children and
pets. Check circuit for over-
loading.

Use Correct Bulbs and Cord
For Outdoor Lighting

For outdoor lighting, don’t
place lamps too near trees,
shrubs, or wooden walls or

fences. Use waterproof electric
cords and sockets, and lamps
which will not be cracked by
wetting when they are hot.
Don’t use indoor strings of
lights outside. Outdoor strings
have rubber or synthetic rings
around each lamp to keep wa-
ter out of the sockets. The
lamps do not break easily and
usually burn independently. If
you need an .extension cord,
use the outdoor (heavy rubber-
covered) type. Tape all connec-

tions with electrician’s rubber
tape.
