(Continued on page 3) Ferdinand R. Lo Fo Sang Advances To Area Supervisor in Mechanical Effective August 1, Ferdi- nand R. Lo Fo Sang was pro- moted to area supervisor in the Electrical Maintenance Section of the Mechanical- Maintenance & Construction Division. With this promotion he became a management member. Ferdinand started with the company as an apprentice in the Lago Vocational School in 1943. After graduating in 1946, he was assigned to the Mechanical-Electrical Division as an electrician helper "B". After six months, he joined the local army, returning to the Electrical Division a year la- ter where he advanced to elec- trician helper "A" in 1948. Between 1949 and 1952 he worked in the various electri- cian categories, advancing to electrician "A" and tester. Since then he acted on several occasions as sub foreman and assistant foreman, and over the recent years as area su- pervisor, in various sections of the Mechanical Department. He also assisted Dressler en- gineers in the installation of computer hook-up to the 2300 voltage starters in the Oil Movements Department. Prior to his August 1 pro- motion, Ferdinand had been an equipment tradesman "A", ac- F. R. Lo Fo Sang ting area supervisor in Elec- trical. He has followed the Lago- sponsored Process Training, Electrician and Power Distri- bution courses. On his own, he took evening courses at the technical school in welding, al- gebra and basic electronics. While there is no such organization in Aruba at present, the Youth Air Bri- gade in Curagao has over 60 members. Plans are now in the making to set up a similar or- ganization in Aruba next year. Similar groups are in exis- tence in over 30 countries throughout the world. Every year there is an exchange of cadets among these countries. The U.S. C.A.P. was organ- ized December 1, 1941. This organization is now headed by National Commander, General of its operations and in courier service. They also help in civil defense work and in search and rescue activities in natural and non-natural disasters. Traffic Problems In the Early Days Drivers have been exper- iencing traffic hangups for years. And chances are they will go right on experiencing them in the future. There's really not much you can do about it. Since the early days, rules have been set to cope with traffic problems. They did it their own way. One Way If you have ever found yourself going the wrong way on a one-way street, maybe you have wondered who thought up such an idea. Concealed danger Many a motorist has been booby-trapped by a stop sign hidden by brush or a cross- road obscured by a cornfield. He would have had no trouble back in thirteenth century England. In 1285 a law was passed providing that "All trees and shrubs must be cut down for a distance of 2,000 feet on either side of the roads between market towns to prevent the concealment of robbers in them." Nowadays the real hazard is when you can't see an on- coming vehicle. So What Else Is Old? The prophet says: "The chariots shall rage in the streets: they shall jostle one another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches; they shall run like lightning." I Mechanical Shops Renoba Since last year, the Mech- anical Shops have undergone considerable facelifting. A number of machines in the Machine Shop have been re- arranged. The new setup of machines in diagonal position instead of blockwise formation provides a safer and more space-saving arrangement. The whole interior of the building, including machines and some tools, now display a new soft green coat. Also certain sections of the floor have been painted a light green at the suggestion of the tradesmen. This gives the shop a fresher look and contributes to better housekeeping. In addition to the new lay- out of the Machine Shop, some $28,000 worth of tools have been ordered to keep up with the latest developments and techniques in modern shops. These tools include the new granite surface plate for pre- cision measuring and some pneumatic and hydraulic tools, used for rapid disassembly. Some work procedures have also been improved. Two new square tanks have been in- stalled for washing and treat- ing pumps prior to repair. Work benches have been pro- vided at a more convenient height for workmen to work in disassembling and assem- bling pumps and other equip- ment. New racks have been installed to hold incoming equipment that need repair. Now a dry electric heater re- places an oil bath heater for heating bearings from 1000 F. to about 5500 F.
