How Old Is the First
Safety Rule ?

To indicate that something is very old, there is a saying:
As old as Adam. In his days, safety rules were not spelled out,
but it is known that the first safety rule was found in the
Bible. It was written in the Old Testament in the book of
Deuteronomy, Chapter 22, Verse 8, where Moses issued the
following (safety) rule:

"If you build a new house, put a parapet (protective
railing) around the roof; otherwise, if someone falls off,
you will bring bloodguilt upon your house.”

Moses lived about 1500 years B.C. This means that many
centuries before Christ there have been rules to protect human
lives against accidents.

If we realize that there are still many places where there is
a hazard of falling from a height or through a hole in the floor
because there is no railing, then we could say that safety-wise
very little progress has been made through the ages.

zaminda Moises a duna e sigiente regla (di seguridad):

"Ora bo traha un cas nobo, anto pone rond di su dak un
parapeto (un reel di proteccion); pasobra si algun hende
cai for di dak anto bo ta trece culpa di sanger riba bo mes
cas”

Moises a biba mas of menos 1500 anja promer cu Cristu. Esey

cu tocante seguridad masha poco progreso a worde haci den
curso di siglonan.

L. Comvalius, A. De Palm Promoted
To Pharmacy Technician February 1

Two promotions went into
effect February 1st in the Me-
dical Department. Anselmo H.
N. (Nick) De Palm and Louis
L. T. Comvalius moved up to
pharmacy technician in the
Hospital Pharmacy and at-
tained management status.

Nick was first employed on
February 9, 1937, as a Sample
Boy B in Technical-Laborato-
ries. After a break in service,
he worked for about a year in
Process-Pressure Stills and re-
signed in June 1938.

On January 2, 1952 he re-

A. H. N. de Palm

turned to Lago as a pharma-
cist assistant. Nick then came
with some fifteen years’ ex-
perience in pharmacy from the
San Lucas Drugstore in San
Nicolas. During the last five
years he had been in charge of
that pharmacy. After follow-
ing the 8-year curriculum of
the St. Dominicus school of
Bonaire, Nick attended St.
Thomas College in Curacao
for two years. In 1944 he
passed his examination for
pharmacist assistant after
completing a 6-year private
course in Aruba. Subsequent-
ly, he followed a 2-year med-
ical analyst course under
chairmanship of Doctor of
Pharmacy L. Bijl.

Nick has worked in the old
Plant Dispensary near the Me-
chanical Shops, in the Marine
Dispensary, the Hospital phar-
macy , and later in the former
Employee Medical Center
pharmacy near Gate 2. Since
1964 he has been assigned to
the Lago Hospital pharmacy.

Married, Nick has_ four
daughters and seven sons. He
is a philatelist and is one of

the oldest members of the
Aruba Philatelic Society.

Louis began his career in
the Medical Department on
May 1, 1956. He obtained his
MULO-B diploma in 1934 at
Paramaribo. After attending
a 2-year course in Physics,
Botany and Chemistry at the
Medical School in Surinam,
he earned his diploma in 1937.
The following year he passed
his examination for pharma-
cist assistant.

Before coming to Lago,
Louis worked from 1939 to
1942 as a tester in the CPIM

L.

T. Comvalius

Laboratory in Curacao. Com-
ing to Aruba on February 1,
1943, he worked as pharma-
cist assistant at Botica Aruba,
Oranjestad, for eight years.
He transferred to Botica Cen-
tral in San Nicolas in 1951
and subsequently worked for
five years at Botica Oduber,
Oranjestad.

As a pharmacist assistant,
Louis also worked in the for-
mer Employee Medical Center
pharmacy, and has been with

the Lago Hospital pharmacy
since 1956.
Louis is married and has

three sons and a daughter. He
is a member of the Oranjestad
Court of the Ancient Order
of Forresters. In his free time,
he likes reading.

Attending an average of
about 125 customers a day
(employees and their family),
Nick and Louis recall that in
a peak period during a flu
epidemic in 1957 they at one
time handled up to 500 pres-
criptions a day. In addition to
dispensing medicine, the two
pharmacist technicians also
handle the administrative
work of the pharmacy.

1969 CYI Report Highlights

Greater Interest in Program Noted;
More Cost Saving Ideas Is 1970 Aim

More than Fis. 22,800 was
shared in 1969 by employees
who submitted 181 winning
ideas. Employee interest in
the CYI program continued to
increase in 1969, topping all
four previous years with a to-
tal of 464 ideas compared
with 347 ideas in 1968, the
next best of these years.

Although the percentage of
participation increased from
10.85% in 1968 to 14.39% in
1969, the percentage of adopt-
ed ideas dropped from 43.8%
in 1968 to 39.01% in 1969.
This indicates that the quality
of ideas received last year was
less compared to 1968.

The 1969 CYI report attri-
butes the higher participation
in the CYI program to: 1.
Continued publicity in » the
company publications. 2. In-
creased supervisor acceptance
of and involvement with the
CYI program. 3. Presentation
of awards of Fils. 100 or more
at special dinners, attended by
the immediate supervisors of
the suggesters. Three of these
events were held in 1969.

During 1970, the report sta-
tes, greater attention will be
paid to publicity for stimulat-
ing "cost saving” ideas.

Some 20 yachts of the Aru-
ba Nautical Club at Balashi
and visiting yachts during
fishing tournaments can now
tie up at Aruba’s first marina
and put "the Esso tiger” in
their tank.

A separate fuel pier at the
site has now been equipped by
Lago with one dual pump sup-
plying Esso Regular and Ex-
tra gasolines and with one
pump dispensing marine die-
sel. The pumps are fed from
three 2,000-gallon shore tanks.
As needed, the tanks will be
refilled by tank trucks.

Work on the fuel facilities
started in October last year
and the pumps were ready
for operation in January.
Built by Wescar Aruba N.V.,
the project had cost approxi-
mately $8,000. Carlos Bislip of
Mechanical-Engineering was
in charge of the project.

With the fuel pier ready for
operation, the Aruba Nautical
Club and its 120 members
now have modern facilities to
help them materialize their
plans of organizing annual in-
ternational fishing tourna-

ments.

In addition to their new
club building, the ANC has
some 60 meters of pier to ac-

commodate 20 visiting large
yachts and anchorage for
many more.

How Old Is the First
Safety Rule ?

To indicate that something is very old, there is a saying:
As old as Adam. In his days, safety rules were not spelled out,
but it is known that the first safety rule was found in the
Bible. It was written in the Old Testament in the book of
Deuteronomy, Chapter 22, Verse 8, where Moses issued the
following (safety) rule:

"If you build a new house, put a parapet (protective
railing) around the roof; otherwise, if someone falls off,
you will bring bloodguilt upon your house.”

Moses lived about 1500 years B.C. This means that many
centuries before Christ there have been rules to protect human
lives against accidents.

If we realize that there are still many places where there is
a hazard of falling from a height or through a hole in the floor
because there is no railing, then we could say that safety-wise
very little progress has been made through the ages.

zaminda Moises a duna e sigiente regla (di seguridad):

"Ora bo traha un cas nobo, anto pone rond di su dak un
parapeto (un reel di proteccion); pasobra si algun hende
cai for di dak anto bo ta trece culpa di sanger riba bo mes
cas”

Moises a biba mas of menos 1500 anja promer cu Cristu. Esey

cu tocante seguridad masha poco progreso a worde haci den
curso di siglonan.

L. Comvalius, A. De Palm Promoted
To Pharmacy Technician February 1

Two promotions went into
effect February 1st in the Me-
dical Department. Anselmo H.
N. (Nick) De Palm and Louis
L. T. Comvalius moved up to
pharmacy technician in the
Hospital Pharmacy and at-
tained management status.

Nick was first employed on
February 9, 1937, as a Sample
Boy B in Technical-Laborato-
ries. After a break in service,
he worked for about a year in
Process-Pressure Stills and re-
signed in June 1938.

On January 2, 1952 he re-

A. H. N. de Palm

turned to Lago as a pharma-
cist assistant. Nick then came
with some fifteen years’ ex-
perience in pharmacy from the
San Lucas Drugstore in San
Nicolas. During the last five
years he had been in charge of
that pharmacy. After follow-
ing the 8-year curriculum of
the St. Dominicus school of
Bonaire, Nick attended St.
Thomas College in Curacao
for two years. In 1944 he
passed his examination for
pharmacist assistant after
completing a 6-year private
course in Aruba. Subsequent-
ly, he followed a 2-year med-
ical analyst course under
chairmanship of Doctor of
Pharmacy L. Bijl.

Nick has worked in the old
Plant Dispensary near the Me-
chanical Shops, in the Marine
Dispensary, the Hospital phar-
macy , and later in the former
Employee Medical Center
pharmacy near Gate 2. Since
1964 he has been assigned to
the Lago Hospital pharmacy.

Married, Nick has_ four
daughters and seven sons. He
is a philatelist and is one of

the oldest members of the
Aruba Philatelic Society.

Louis began his career in
the Medical Department on
May 1, 1956. He obtained his
MULO-B diploma in 1934 at
Paramaribo. After attending
a 2-year course in Physics,
Botany and Chemistry at the
Medical School in Surinam,
he earned his diploma in 1937.
The following year he passed
his examination for pharma-
cist assistant.

Before coming to Lago,
Louis worked from 1939 to
1942 as a tester in the CPIM

L.

T. Comvalius

Laboratory in Curacao. Com-
ing to Aruba on February 1,
1943, he worked as pharma-
cist assistant at Botica Aruba,
Oranjestad, for eight years.
He transferred to Botica Cen-
tral in San Nicolas in 1951
and subsequently worked for
five years at Botica Oduber,
Oranjestad.

As a pharmacist assistant,
Louis also worked in the for-
mer Employee Medical Center
pharmacy, and has been with

the Lago Hospital pharmacy
since 1956.
Louis is married and has

three sons and a daughter. He
is a member of the Oranjestad
Court of the Ancient Order
of Forresters. In his free time,
he likes reading.

Attending an average of
about 125 customers a day
(employees and their family),
Nick and Louis recall that in
a peak period during a flu
epidemic in 1957 they at one
time handled up to 500 pres-
criptions a day. In addition to
dispensing medicine, the two
pharmacist technicians also
handle the administrative
work of the pharmacy.

1969 CYI Report Highlights

Greater Interest in Program Noted;
More Cost Saving Ideas Is 1970 Aim

More than Fis. 22,800 was
shared in 1969 by employees
who submitted 181 winning
ideas. Employee interest in
the CYI program continued to
increase in 1969, topping all
four previous years with a to-
tal of 464 ideas compared
with 347 ideas in 1968, the
next best of these years.

Although the percentage of
participation increased from
10.85% in 1968 to 14.39% in
1969, the percentage of adopt-
ed ideas dropped from 43.8%
in 1968 to 39.01% in 1969.
This indicates that the quality
of ideas received last year was
less compared to 1968.

The 1969 CYI report attri-
butes the higher participation
in the CYI program to: 1.
Continued publicity in » the
company publications. 2. In-
creased supervisor acceptance
of and involvement with the
CYI program. 3. Presentation
of awards of Fils. 100 or more
at special dinners, attended by
the immediate supervisors of
the suggesters. Three of these
events were held in 1969.

During 1970, the report sta-
tes, greater attention will be
paid to publicity for stimulat-
ing "cost saving” ideas.

Some 20 yachts of the Aru-
ba Nautical Club at Balashi
and visiting yachts during
fishing tournaments can now
tie up at Aruba’s first marina
and put "the Esso tiger” in
their tank.

A separate fuel pier at the
site has now been equipped by
Lago with one dual pump sup-
plying Esso Regular and Ex-
tra gasolines and with one
pump dispensing marine die-
sel. The pumps are fed from
three 2,000-gallon shore tanks.
As needed, the tanks will be
refilled by tank trucks.

Work on the fuel facilities
started in October last year
and the pumps were ready
for operation in January.
Built by Wescar Aruba N.V.,
the project had cost approxi-
mately $8,000. Carlos Bislip of
Mechanical-Engineering was
in charge of the project.

With the fuel pier ready for
operation, the Aruba Nautical
Club and its 120 members
now have modern facilities to
help them materialize their
plans of organizing annual in-
ternational fishing tourna-

ments.

In addition to their new
club building, the ANC has
some 60 meters of pier to ac-

commodate 20 visiting large
yachts and anchorage for
many more.

How Old Is the First
Safety Rule ?
To indicate that something is very old, there is a saying:
As old as Adam. In his days, safety rules were not spelled out,
but it is known that the first safety rule was found in the
Bible. It was written in the Old Testament in the book of
Deuteronomy, Chapter 22, Verse 8, where Moses issued the
following (safety) rule:
"If you build a new house, put a parapet (protective
railing) around the roof; otherwise, if someone falls off,
you will bring bloodguilt upon your house."
Moses lived about 1500 years B.C. This means that many
centuries before Christ there have been rules to protect human
lives against accidents.
If we realize that there are still many places where there is

2aminda Moises a duna e sigiente regla (di seguridad):
"Ora bo traha un cas nobo, anto pone rond di su dak un
parapeto (un reel di protection); pasobra si algun hende
cai for di dak anto bo ta trece culpa di sanger riba bo mes
cas"
Moises a biba mas of menos 1500 anja promer cu Cristu. Esey
ta nifica cu hopi siglo promer cu Cristu ya tabatin regla di
seguridad pa proteha bida di hende contra desgracia.
Si nos realize cu te awendia tin hopi lugar caminda tin peli-

cu tocante seguridad masha poco progress a worde haci den

1969 CYI Report Highlights
Greater Interest in Program Noted;
More Cost Saving Ideas Is 1970 Aim
More than Fls. 22,800 was
shared in 1969 by employees
who submitted 181 winning
ideas. Employee interest in
the CYI program continued to
increase in 1969, topping all
four previous years with a to-
tal of 464 ideas compared
with 347 ideas in 1968, the
next best of these years.
Although the percentage of
participation increased from
10.85% in 1968 to 14.39% in
1969, the percentage of adopt-
ed ideas dropped from 43.8%
in 1968 to 39.01% in 1969.
This indicates that the quality
of ideas received last year was
less compared to 1968.
The 1969 CYI report attri-
butes the higher participation
in the CYI program to: 1.
Continued publicity in the
company publications. 2. In-
creased supervisor acceptance
of and involvement with the
CYI program. 3. Presentation
of awards of Fls. 100 or more
at special dinners, attended by
the immediate supervisors of
the suggesters. Three of these
events were held in 1969.
During 1970, the report sta-
tes, greater attention will be
paid to publicity for stimulat-
ing "cost saving" ideas.

Esso Tiger Now Ready to Roar
At Aruba Nautical Club Pier
Some 20 yachts of the Aru-
ba Nautical Club at Balashi
and visiting yachts during
fishing tournaments can now
tie up at Aruba's first marina
and put "the Esso tiger" in
their tank.
A separate fuel pier at the
site has now been equipped by
Lago with one dual pump sup-
plying Esso Regular and Ex-
tra gasolines and with one
pump dispensing marine die-
sel. The pumps are fed from
three 2,000-gallon shore tanks.
As needed, the tanks will be
refilled by tank trucks.
Work on the fuel facilities
started in October last year
and the pumps were ready
for operation in January.
Built by Wescar Aruba N.V.,
the project had cost approxi-
mately $8,000. Carlos Bislip of
Mechanical-Engineering was
in charge of the project.
With the fuel pier ready for
operation, the Aruba Nautical

In addition to their new
