Improve Skill

Through Rapid Reading Seminar

Seventy participants recent-
ly completed a Rapid Reading
Seminar which began January
12. Sponsored by the Lago
Seminar Committee, the sem-
inar was taught by Dr. Flo-
rence Schale of the North-
western University of Chicago.

The seminar was aimed at
the development of skills in
rapid reading with a higher
level of comprehension. The
topics covered during the ses-
sions included increasing voca-
bulary and rate of perception,
ways to skim and scan materi-
als, recognizing signal words
and key sentences, analysis of
paragraph structure and func-
tion, and ways to speed up
reading unfamiliar materials.

At each class Professor
Schale gave a brief outline of
the session after which the
students strived to increase
their reading speed through
the use of a reading pacer.
Through this device the stu-
dent’s individual reading rate
could be measured and con-
trolled. A comprehension test

was given after
session.

The twenty-hour seminar
was conducted over a 4-week
period. Due to the wide res-
ponse, participants had to be
divided into four groups, with
each group attending ten two-
hour sessions.

Dr. Schale received her B.S.
degree in Liberal Arts, and
Master’s degree in Counseling
and Guidance from North-
western University. She at-
tained her Ph. D. in Education
and Reading at the Univers-
ity of Chicago. Well exper-
ienced in her profession, she
has been instructor in Student
Personnel Services of the Uni-
versity of Wisconsin, served
as reading consultant to Fifth
Army Headquarters and satel-
lite agencies and has esta-
blished a Reading Improve-
ment Program for universities.

In addition, Dr. Schale has
written several articles which
have been published in many
academic journals. Currently

Manual of Safe Practices Updated;
Each Employee to Get a New Copy

A revised Manual of Safe
Practices was issued recently
by PR/IR’s Safety Section.
Each employee will receive a
copy, for which a receipt card
will have to be signed.

The new manual, replacing
a 1952 edition, contains some
new features: a guide for the
use of protective equipment;
a complete reference index
for the Lago Work Permits
Manual; a supplement (Chap-
ter IV - A, B, C) containing
the basic rules for issuing
work permits; rules covering
radiation; rules covering new
protective equipment; and of-
fice rules.

The format of the 130-page
manual is about the same as
the previous one (4% x 7 in-
ches), but it has a more flex-
ible cover of durable plastic
with ringbinder, so that fut-
ure revisions can be easily in-
serted page-wise. Instead of
three colors, the new manual
is now printed in only two
colors: the red text contains
the safety rules, while the

to 2500 wmp or more.

Manual of Safe Practices Updated;
Each Employee to Get a New Copy

A revised Manual of Safe
Practices was issued recently
by PR/IR’s Safety Section.
Each employee will receive a
copy, for which a receipt card
will have to be signed.

The new manual, replacing
a 1952 edition, contains some
new features: a guide for the
use of protective equipment;
a complete reference index
for the Lago Work Permits
Manual; a supplement (Chap-
ter IV - A, B, C) containing
the basic rules for issuing
work permits; rules covering
radiation; rules covering new
protective equipment; and of-
fice rules.

The format of the 130-page
manual is about the same as
the previous one (4% x 7 in-
ches), but it has a more flex-
ible cover of durable plastic
with ringbinder, so that fut-
ure revisions can be easily in-
serted page-wise. Instead of
three colors, the new manual
is now printed in only two
colors: the red text contains
the safety rules, while the

"The booklet,” says Safety
Adviser Everett Beaujon,
"contains all the accident pre-
ventive rules and precautions,
but it’s up to every employee
personally to promote his own
