Our Cover

This year’s cover depicts the refinery, lit by a
thousand lights. Santa Claus rides over the refinery
area, bringing a bright star. The star represents the
lights that will brighten the many new plants of the
desulphurization facilities and the new offshore berth.
It also means a brighter future that these new pro-
jects will bring.

The Santa Claus scene is a water color painting by
Joe de Cuba, who also took the pictures.

The Back Page

The frame around the two poems by Miss Mercedes
Beaujon illustrates some of the things that bring more
joy to the Christmas season: musical instruments, de-
corations, gifts. The water color painting is by Miss
Lydia I. de Lange.

Lago Awards Contract to Dredge
In Lagoon and Build New Dock

Recently, Lago President
W. A. Murray and Ir. J. F.
Fransen Daalmeijer, Chief En-
gineer of Royal Dutch Neth-
erlands Harbor Works, signed
a contract for marine and
land reclamation work to be
done at Lago.

This contract will include
extensive dredging work, the
cutting of a new harbor en-

trance through the reef south
of the company’s laboratories,
and the construction of a 325-

Facilities of Lago Sport Park
Turned Over to Aruba Sport Unie

"I would like to extend our
best wishes for much success
in the continued operation of
the Sport Park. I feel confi-
dent that this transfer is a
positive step towards the fu-
ture development of sports on
the island and in the San Nic-
olas area in particular.” These
words were spoken by Presi-
dent W. A. Murray shortly
after he and Aruba Sport
Union President Mr. I. Franka
had signed the papers offici-
ally transferring the Lago
Sport Park to ASU.

This transfer took place in
Mr. Murray’s office on Decem-
ber 3, 1968. Also present at
this occasion were Public &
Industrial Relations Manager
B. E. Nixon and Public Rel-
ations Administrator O. V.
Antonette.

As agreed upon last year
between the ASU and Lago,
at the time of transfer Lago
would assist the Aruba Sport
Union with a five-year sub-
sidy amounting to approxim-
ately Fls. 215,000 over a five-
year period. This amount in-
cludes a one-time donation of

Fls. 10,000 to build a concrete

block wall on the south side
of the Park.

In addition, Lago has also
agreed to make necessary re-
pairs and painting of the
Sport Park, which will amount
to approximately Fls. 10,000.

The Lago Sport Park was

inaugurated March 9, 1941.
Major improvements were
made in 1953, when lights

were installed and the grand-
stands were enlarged to ac-
commodate over 1500 persons.
Since that time, thousands of

spectators watch olympiad
events each year while the
yearly attendance exceeds

150,000 spectators.

The Sport Park offers fac-
ilities for numerous sports,
such as track and field events,
baseball, softball, football,
volleyball, basketball, tennis,
cricket, boxing and judo.
There is also a playground for
children. For many years, the
Sport Park has also been used
as sport center for San Nico-
las schools.

The facilities of the Sport
Park represent a total invest-
ment of about Fils. 700,000.

Many Lago employees un-
dertake special activities dur-
ing the season to help make
Christmas brighter for others.

One of them who shares her
joy of Christmas with others
is Miss Mercedes (Siki) Beau-
jon of Compt.-Office Services.

Each year at Christmas
time Siki rounds up the child-
ren in her neighborhood at
Simeon Antonio and teaches
them carols and prepares them
for a Christmas play. Siki,
who writes the plays herself,
also designs the costumes for
the children and also accom-
panies them with her organ
music. The week before
Christmas, she invites the
parents of the children, neigh-
bors and co-workers to her
home, where in her spacious
garden, she brings the spirit
of the season to her many
guests.

In addition to all these pre-
parations which take up most
of her time after office hours
and her weekends, she and
the kids make Christmas de-
corations to raise funds. The
proceeds go towards the pur-
chase of food for a large
Christmas basket. For three
consecutive years, each Christ-
mas Siki and “her’’ children
have been making a poor
family happy with their gift.

Siki has, no doubt, taught

An Office Clerk in the Of-

her Lago career she worked

A total of Fls. 4410 was paid
out in CYI awards during Oc-

The highest CYI awards
went to the following em-
ployees whose ideas were

adopted in November:

Benito Lampe, Marine Dis-
patcher in Process-Oil Move-
ments-Agency, won two CYI
prizes. He received a supple-
mental award of Fis. 700 for

tion in their next arrival mes-
sage. An initial award of
Fis. 200 for this idea was paid
in September. Mr. Lampe al-
so won Fis. 160 for his idea
to standardize bills of lading

his idea to switch control sys-
tem on the Rerun tower bot-

The most important feast
day of the Christian world is
again at hand: The Nativity
of Christ, Though the moment-
ous occasion will be celebrat-
ed by people in many lands,
the way they celebrate it will
vary from country to country.

In Aruba, there are people
of some 40 nationalities wio
will, 10 doubt, celebrate
Christmas according to their
own traditions. Whatever their
customs, the event is a univer-
sal, but yet a personal, feast
day.

In the very beginning,
Christmas was mainly a rel-
igious holiday. But, as the

custom spread, local ways of
celebrating began to blend
with the central theme of The
Nativity.

Christmas Decorations

As one of the practices dur-
ing the feast of Saturn, for
example, the Romans decorat-
ed their temples with green
boughs and flowers. The
Druids on the other hand made
it a practice of collecting mist-
letoe and hanging it in their
homes as a symbol of the
season.

ARUBA ESSO NEWS

From the Saxons, today’s
Christmas received the cus-
tom of decorating with holly,
ivy and bay.

The use of Christmas trees
as holiday symbols began in
Germany in the 8th Century.
Although the oak tree had
been used as a sign to Odin,
a god usually associated with
Norse myth, the first Christ-
mas tree, a fir, replaced the
oak later and became a sym-
bol of the Christ Child.

candles and orna-

Later,
ments began to appear on the

trees as special adornment,
Prince Albert, husband of
Queen Victoria, is said to have
introduced the custom in
Great Britain.

Carols

Music also has grown into
an important Christmas tra-
dition. Originally, liturgical
singing alone was done, too
theological for popular use.
The 13th Century, however,
saw the beginnings of popular
carols, written in the local
language, largely through the
influence of Francis of Assisi.

From Italy, the practice
spread to France, Germany,
England and other countries.
Even today, the practice of
house to house carol singing
is part of the spirit of Christ-
mas season.

In South America, especial-
ly in nearby Venezuela, the
"Aguinaldos”’ and "Gaitas”
are popular during the entire
season. In Aruba, these local

Na cuminzamento, Pascu

Musica tambe a crece bira
un importante tradicion di
Pascu, Originalmente tabatin
solamente cantamento litur-

gico pa uso popular. Pero den
di Siglo 13 nos ta mira cu-
minzamento di canticanan,
scirbi den e idioma local, pa
majoria parti bao influencia di
San Francisco di Assisi.

Di Italia e costumber a pa-

awendia e costumber di pasa
cantando cas pa cas ta parti
di espiritu di temporada di
Pascu.

Na Sur America, especial-

mento local a bira popular du-
rante ultimo anjanan. Anja

Costumber di usa kerstboom

Mas despues, bela y adorno.

nan ta bisa a introduci e cos-
tumber aki na Gran Bretafia.

Den hopi pais, Pascu ta ni-

Christmas TF, oy

Ringing of bells tells us Christmas is here,
Aguinaldos joyfully bring the Season’s cheer.
And we with careful hands prepare,

The baskets that we love to share.

As we go along taking the Christmas peace,
To the aching hearts we want to ease,
Praying. that we may give as He hath given,
And forgive as He hath forgiven.

So that on the Holy night,

When the trees are shining bright,

Our voices can ring out in the clear,

Merry Christmas to you all so dear!

Recently, Lago President

Facilities of Lago Sport Park
Turned Over to Aruba Sport Unie

"I would like to extend our
best wishes for much success
in the continued operation of
the Sport Park. I feel confi-
dent that this transfer is a
positive step towards the fu-
ture development of sports on
the island and in the San Nic-
olas area in particular.” These
words were spoken by Presi-
dent W. A. Murray shortly
after he and Aruba Sport
Union President Mr. I. Franka
had signed the papers offici-
ally transferring the Lago
Sport Park to ASU.

This transfer took place in
Mr. Murray’s office on Decem-
ber 3, 1968. Also present at
this occasion were Public &
Industrial Relations Manager
B. E. Nixon and Public Rel-
ations Administrator O. V.
Antonette.

As agreed upon last year
between the ASU and Lago,
at the time of transfer Lago
would assist the Aruba Sport
Union with a five-year sub-
sidy amounting to approxim-
ately Fls. 215,000 over a five-
year period. This amount in-
cludes a one-time donation of

Fls. 10,000 to build a concrete

block wall on the south side
of the Park.

In addition, Lago has also
agreed to make necessary re-
pairs and painting of the
Sport Park, which will amount
to approximately Fls. 10,000.

The Lago Sport Park was

inaugurated March 9, 1941.
Major improvements were
made in 1953, when lights

were installed and the grand-
stands were enlarged to ac-
commodate over 1500 persons.
Since that time, thousands of

spectators watch olympiad
events each year while the
yearly attendance exceeds

150,000 spectators.

The Sport Park offers fac-
ilities for numerous sports,
such as track and field events,
baseball, softball, football,
volleyball, basketball, tennis,
cricket, boxing and judo.
There is also a playground for
children. For many years, the
Sport Park has also been used
as sport center for San Nico-
las schools.

The facilities of the Sport
Park represent a total invest-
ment of about Fils. 700,000.

Many Lago employees un-
dertake special activities dur-
ing the season to help make
Christmas brighter for others.

One of them who shares her
joy of Christmas with others
is Miss Mercedes (Siki) Beau-
jon of Compt.-Office Services.

Each year at Christmas
time Siki rounds up the child-
ren in her neighborhood at
Simeon Antonio and teaches
them carols and prepares them
for a Christmas play. Siki,
who writes the plays herself,
also designs the costumes for
the children and also accom-
panies them with her organ
music. The week before
Christmas, she invites the
parents of the children, neigh-
bors and co-workers to her
home, where in her spacious
garden, she brings the spirit
of the season to her many
guests.

In addition to all these pre-
parations which take up most
of her time after office hours
and her weekends, she and
the kids make Christmas de-
corations to raise funds. The
proceeds go towards the pur-
chase of food for a large
Christmas basket. For three
consecutive years, each Christ-
mas Siki and “her’’ children
have been making a poor
family happy with their gift.

Siki has, no doubt, taught

A total of Fls. 4410 was paid
out in CYI awards during Oc-
tober and November. Of the

or more for their suggestion.

Six of the men _ received
their check at “a Management
dinner at the Aruba Golf Club

ray.

The highest CYI awards
went to the following em-
ployees whose ideas were

adopted in November:

Benito Lampe, Marine Dis-
patcher in Process-Oil Move-
ments-Agency, won two CYI
prizes. He received a supple-
mental award of Fis. 700 for
his idea to improve tanker
turnaround by asking masters
to include specific informa-
tion in their next arrival mes-
sage. An initial award of
Fis. 200 for this idea was paid
in September. Mr. Lampe al-
so won Fis. 160 for his idea
to standardize bills of lading

forms to include commonly
used headings.

Felix Armando Koolman,
Assistant Operator in Oil

Movements, won Fls. 500 for
his suggestion to install a
block valve to wash header

eering Assistant "B” in Tech-
nical - Process Engineering,

spent caustic from Edeleanu
Plant to caustic wash extract.
This idea will save caustic and
fresh water, in turn saving
time and effort to make fresh
caustic. He received an initial

award of Fils. 360, plus Fls. 50
as a Lucky Area Winner.

George C. Granger, Quart-
ermaster in Process-Oil Move-
ments, won Fis. 315 for the

initial award of Fis. 225 for
his idea to switch control sys-
tem on the Rerun tower bot-

Born in Holland in 1907,

he never uses a brush.

Exhibition of Mr. Van

The most important feast
day of the Christian world is
again at hand: The Nativity
of Christ, Though the moment-
ous occasion will be celebrat-
ed by people in many lands,
the way they celebrate it will
vary from country to country.

In Aruba, there are people
of some 40 nationalities wio
will, 10 doubt, celebrate
Christmas according to their
own traditions. Whatever their
customs, the event is a univer-
sal, but yet a personal, feast
day.

In the very beginning,
Christmas was mainly a rel-
igious holiday. But, as the

custom spread, local ways of
celebrating began to blend
with the central theme of The
Nativity.

Christmas Decorations

As one of the practices dur-
ing the feast of Saturn, for
example, the Romans decorat-
ed their temples with green
boughs and flowers. The
Druids on the other hand made
it a practice of collecting mist-
letoe and hanging it in their
homes as a symbol of the
season.

ARUBA ESSO NEWS

From the Saxons, today’s
Christmas received the cus-
tom of decorating with holly,
ivy and bay.

The use of Christmas trees
as holiday symbols began in
Germany in the 8th Century.
Although the oak tree had
been used as a sign to Odin,
a god usually associated with
Norse myth, the first Christ-
mas tree, a fir, replaced the
oak later and became a sym-
bol of the Christ Child.

candles and orna-

Later,
ments began to appear on the

trees as special adornment,
Prince Albert, husband of
Queen Victoria, is said to have
introduced the custom in
Great Britain.

Carols

Music also has grown into
an important Christmas tra-
dition. Originally, liturgical
singing alone was done, too
theological for popular use.
The 13th Century, however,
saw the beginnings of popular
carols, written in the local
language, largely through the
influence of Francis of Assisi.

From Italy, the practice
spread to France, Germany,
England and other countries.
Even today, the practice of
house to house carol singing
is part of the spirit of Christ-
mas season.

In South America, especial-
ly in nearby Venezuela, the
"Aguinaldos”’ and "Gaitas”
are popular during the entire
season. In Aruba, these local

Musica tambe a crece bira
un importante tradicion di

gico pa uso popular. Pero den
di Siglo 13 nos ta mira cu-
minzamento di canticanan,
scirbi den e idioma local, pa

San Francisco di Assisi.

Di Italia e costumber a pa-

Na Sur America, especial-

mento local a bira popular du-
rante ultimo anjanan. Anja

To the aching hearts we want to ease,
Praying. that we may give as He hath given,
And forgive as He hath forgiven.

So that on the Holy night,

When the trees are shining bright,

Our voices can ring out in the clear,

Merry Christmas to you all so dear!

Message
On behalf of my associates

tunity to extend Season's
Greetings to all Lago employ-
ees and annuttants, their fam-
ilies, and friends.
Christmas each year brings
a rebirth of faith; it's a season
filled wzth good intentions and
hopes for a brighter future
At this time, I'm happy to
say, a brighter future is as- President W.
sured for Lago and Aruba
through several large projects that will be under conrruction
in our refinery during the next two to three years.
Like all progressive companies, Logo has to keep modifying
and innovat'ing to meet the constantly chaigingl demands on the
pol industry. We can be proud that ie are able to meet thrse
challenges
We may also take pride in our safety performance So far this
year, we have had an overall improvement of about 80c/ over
our safety performance in 1967.
This year has also been marked by several other f major mo-
provements: A number of huge tanks have been built, and mod-
ernization of our piers has been completed recently. Our sea
panorama will be changed by the Offshore Mooring Facllitics,
now under construction.
All these facilities will help us keep pace wzth progress in the
petroleum industry. They also provide greater job security for
us and employment for many hundreds of construction workers.
This gives us a sense of satisfaction and confidence in a better
future.
It is in this spirit and with the hope for better things in 1969
that I wish each and everyone of you a Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year.

"I would like to extend our
best wishes for much success
in the continued operation of
the Sport Park. I feel confi-

positive step towards the fu-

words were spoken by Presi-

after he and Aruba Sport
Union President Mr. I. Frank
had signed the papers offici-

Sport Park to ASU.
This transfer took place in
Mr. Murray's office on Decem-

this occasion were Public &
Industrial Relations Manager
B. E. Nixon and Public Rel-
ations Administrator 0. V.

As agreed upon last year
between the ASU and Dago,
at the time of transfer Lago
would assist the Aruba Sport
Union with a five-year sub-
sidy amounting to approxim-
ately Fls. 215,000 over a five-
year period. This amount in-
cludes a one-time donation of
Fls. 10,000 to build'a concrete
V: r1
block wall on the south side
of the Park.
In addition, Lago has also
agreed to make necessary re-
pairs and painting of the
Sport Park, which will amount
to approximately Fsl. 10,000.
The Lago Sport Park was
inaugurated March 9, 1941.
Major improvements were
made in 1953, when lights
were installed and the grand-
stands were enlarged to ac-
commodate over 1500 persons.
Since that time, thousands of
spectators watch olympiad
events each year while the
yearly attendance exceeds
150,000 spectators.
The Sport Park offers fac-
ilities for numerous sports,
such asitrack andifield events,
baseball, softball, football,
volleyball, basketball, tennis,
cricket, boxing and judo.

r a iki Beaujon Brings Brighter Christmas to Her Neighborhood
Many Lago employees un.
dertake special activities dur-
ing the season to help make
Christmas brighter for others.
One of them who shares her
joy of Christmas with others
is Miss Mercedes (Siki) Beau-
jon of Compt.-Office Services.
Each year at Christmas
time Siki rounds up the child-
ren in her neighborhood at
Simeon Antonio and teaches
them carols and prepares them
for a Christmas play. Siki,
who writes the plays herself,
also designs the costumes for
the children and also accom.
panies them with her organ
music. The week before
Christmas, she invites the
parents of the children, neigh-
bors and co-workers to her
home, where in her spacious
garden, she brings the spirit
of the season to her many
guests.
In addition to all these pre-
parations which take up most
of her time after office hours
and her weekends, she and
the kids make Christmas de-
corations to raise funds. The
proceeds go towards the pur-
chase of food for a large
Christmas basket. For three
consecutive years, each Christ-
mas Siki and "her" children
have been making a poor
family happy with their gift.
Siki has, no doubt, taught
'-pif these children the pleasure of
giving, not only material
things, but their time and ef-
forts as well.
An Office Clerk in the Of-
fice Services Section, she rec-
ently received a gold watch
for 25 years of company serv.
ice. During seventeen years of
her Lago career she worked
in the Marine Department.
Siki accompanies her child-
ren choir on the organ.

Her hobbies include writing

participated in various island

won several trophies.
This year Siki shares yet
another of her talents. This
time two of her poems, in
English and Papiamento, ap-
pear on the backcover of our
Christmas edition.

37 Men Share FIs. 4410 In Oct./Nov. CYI Sweepstakes
A total of Fls. 4410 was paid
out in CYI awards during Oc-
tober and November. Of the
37 employees who shared in
these prizes, eight were top
CYI winners, earning Fls. 100
or more for their suggestion.
Six of the men received
their check at a Management
dinner at the Aruba Golf Club
Nov. 29 from President Mur-
ray.
The highest CYI awards
went to the following em-
ployees whose ideas were
adopted in November:
Benito Lampe, Marine Dis-
patcher in Process-Oil Move-
ments-Agency, won two CYI
prizes. He received a supple-
mental award of Fls. 700 for
his idea to improve tanker
turnaround by asking masters
to include specific informa-
tion in their next arrival mes-
sage. An initial award of
Fls. 200 for this idea was paid
in September. Mr. Lampe al-
so won Fls. 160 for his idea
to standardize bills of lading
forms to include commonly
used headings.
Felix Armando Koolman,
Assistant Operator in Oil
Movements, won Fls. 500 for
his suggestion to install a
block valve to wash header
west of manifold between
Pumps 1578 and 2306. This
idea speeds up and increases
flexibility of operations.
Moises F. Kusmus, Engin-
eering Assistant "B" in Tech-
nical Process Engineering,
suggested to use raffinate
spent caustic from Edeleanu
Plant to caustic wash extract.
This idea will save caustic and
fresh water, in turn saving
time and effort to make fresh
caustic. He received an initial
award of Fls. 360, plus Fls. 50
as a Lucky Area Winner.
George C. Granger, Quart-
ermaster in Process-Oil Move-
ments, won Fls. 315 for the
following suggestion: Use
strands of shortened 8" dacron
rope no longer used for tying
up ships instead of purchasing
new one-inch dacron ropes
used for tying tire fenders
alongside tugboats.
Frits Maduro, Operator in
Refining Division, received an
initial award of Fls. 225 for
his idea to switch control sys-
tem on the Rerun tower bot-
tom level from flow control-
ler (FRC) to a level control-
ler (LIC) at AAR-2. Switch-
ing to automatic LIC control-
ler will assure more accurate

Christmas In Many Lands
The most important feast
day of the Christian world is
again at hand: The Nativity
of Christ. Though the moment-
ous occasion will be celebrat-
ed by people in many lands,
the way they celebrate it will
vary from country to country.
In Aruba, there are people
of some 40 nationalite: -wiho
will, .to doubt, celebrate
Christmas according to their
own traditions. Whatever their
customs, the event is a univer-
sal, but yet a personal, feast
day.
In the very beginning,
Christmas was mainly a rel-
igious holiday. But, as the
custom spread, local ways of
celebrating began to blend
with the central theme of The
Nativity.
Christmas Decorations
As one of the practices dur.
ing the feast of Saturn, for
example, the Romans decorat-
ed their temples with green
boughs and flowers. The
Druids on the other hand made
It a practice of collecting mist-
letoe and hanging it in their
homes as a symbol of the
season.
From the Saxons, today's
Christmas received the cus-
tom of decorating with holly,
ivy and bay.
The use of Christmas trees
as holiday symbols began in
Germany in the 8th Century.
Although the oak tree had
been used as a sign to Odin,
a god usually associated with
Norse myth, the first Christ-
mas tree, a fir, replaced the
oak later and became a sym-
bol of the Christ Child.
Later, candles and orna-
ments began to appear on the
trees as special adornment.
Prince Albert, husband of
Queen Victoria, is said to have
introduced the custom in
Great Britain.
Carols
Music also has grown into
an important Christmas tra-
dition. Originally, liturgical
singing alone was done, too
theological for popular use.
The 13th Century, however,
saw the beginnings of popular
carols, written in the local
language, largely through the
influence of Francis of Assisi.
From Italy, the practice
spread to France, Germany.
England and other countries.
Even today, the practice of
house to house carol singing
is part of the spirit of Christ-
mas season.
In South America, especial-
ly in nearby Venezuela, the
"Aguinaldos" and "Gaitas"
are popular during the entire
season. In Aruba, these local

A Fire Safety Pledge
I will stand my tree in

well filled every day.
I will see that the tree
lights have no broken or
bare wires or loose sockets.
When we go to bed or leave

away from the tree, and not
play too close to it myself.
I will see that the tree is

carols have become popular
for the past few years. Last
year, for instance, some twen-

In many lands, Christmas
