Protect Your Child
From Traffic Accidents...

Thousands of children each year are vaccinated against var-
ious infectious diseases. They receive polio shots, tetanus shots,
and to enter school, the required small pox vaccination. This
sanitary campaign undoubtedly is important to protect the
health and life of your child.

Unfortunately there is no vaccination and there never will be
one to protect your child from one of the major dangers of
modern times: traffic accidents.

Nowadays, children are taught traffic safety at school. This
training, no doubt, has helped your children understand traffic
safety better and has taught them to obey traffic rules. They
have become more confident in the street and can take some
necessary precautions.

But, how then do you protect the child that goes to school for
the first time? The following steps may help make your child
more secure on his way to school:

* Show him the safest and shortest way to get there, teaching
him to look left and right before crossing. Insist that he use the
route you have indicated.

* Get him ready for school in time so he doesn’t have to rush
to get there.

* Teach him to be patient. Stress upon him the importance
of waiting.

* Set a good example and don’t take risks. Your child will
imitate most things you do.

Help your little one to become safety conscious and you won't
have cause to worry.

Seven Technical Students Gain
On-The-Job Experience At Lago

Last month seven technical
students began a six-month in-
plant training assignment at
Lago under the company’s
Cooperative Education Pro-
gram.

The purpose of this program
is to provide professional or
technical students with prac-
tical work experience requir-
ed as an integral part of their
school curriculum.

To participate in this pro-
gram, the students and their
parents should be residents of
the Netherlands Antilles.
Furthermore, the students
must be currently enrolled in
a recognized professional or
technical school (HTS or
UTS) and be recommended by
the school for such training.

Since the program began in
1962, Lago has helped 68
students gain experience in
their practical year.

This year’s participants are:
John A. Williams, who is
studying chemical technology
at the HTS in Heerlen, Hol-
land. He has been assigned to
the Technical-Process Engin-
eering Division and Laborato-
ries.

The others are students of
the UTS John F. Kennedy in
Oranjestad. They are: Saturno
Arends, Kenneth Cheung,
Alexander Mariana and Asing
Ng, who are studying mech-
anical engineering. Robert
van der Schoot and Alvin
Rombley are studying elec-
trical engineering.

These young men will be
working in various mechani-
cal Divisions on a rotational
basis to gain the necessary
work experience required by
their school.

The students’ performance
must meet an acceptable stan-
dard and will be appraised and
recorded. They are also re-
quired to prepare a weekly re-
port for their school.

While in training the com-
pany will provide them with a
grant-in-aid for every 4-week
period.

Students under the Coopera-
tive Education Program are
required to follow all comp-
any rules and regulations dur-
ing their Lago training as-
signment.

Driving Requires Extra Attention
Now That Kids Return To School

If you drive to work and
your route takes you by or
near a school, you have very
good reasons to be extra alert
this month.

Schoolchildren ! Recently
classes were resumed and
over 18,000 children are
swarming the streets in the
morning, during the lunch
hour and in the afternoon
when school is out. This is
the time when you have to be
very careful at school cross-
ings and school zones.

Although Traffic Safety
Training at school has given
the kids improved instruction
of the traffic rules, you can
never be too sure. When
children are at play they for-
get many things, including
their own safety. Suddenly,
and without warning, they

may run in front of your car
and you have to be able to
react quickly to avoid an ac-
cident.

A special reason this month
to be extra careful is because

little kids are going to school
for the first time. Especially
if they’re not accompanied by
an older child, drivers should
expect almost anything from
them. They may be excited,
nervous or bewildered by this
new experience and you are
the one who has to watch out
for them,

Another hazard is the child
sporting his new bike. He
might do some unpredictable
things like veering into your
path or pulling some crazy
stunts to attract his. friends’
attention.

Be prepared for kids step-
ping out of school buses or
darting from between parked
cars.

To be on the safe side, drive
slowly near the school zone
and be prepared to give the
children a brake’.

Keep your eyes open and
expect the unexpected this
month.

Help them live!

Finger-Tip Control Is Introduced
For New Loading Arms at No. 2 Pier

On-the-job _ training has
started recently on the mod-
ernized No. 2 Finger Pier to

* teach some 65 Oil Movements

di
ri

employees how to handle the
new all metal loading arms.

By using a control box,
dock crewmen by finger-tip
control can now connect or
disconnect the new metal
loading arms to the tanker
manifolds. The ten loading
arms (five on each side of
the pier and each complete
arm weighing about 20 tons)
can be controlled electrically
either from the tanker deck
or from a platform on the
pier. The remote control ope-
rates the arms and a hydrau-
lic quick coupling device at
the end of the loading arms.

Coordinator during one
month for the training of the
Oil Movements personnel is
Julian Daniel, a shift foreman
in Oil Movements. He has been
trained by Arthur Aldcroft,
representative of the manu-
facturer of the metal loading
arms.

The training will acquaint
the men with the new loading
system, manifolds, line wash-
ing procedures, line sampling
and the new name system for
lines and manifolds.

The new metal loading
arms will save time and im-
prove tanker turnaround as
they permit quicker hookups
to ship manifolds and higher

loading rates than was pos-
sible with the flexible rubber
hoses.

The pier modernization in-
cluded not only the installa-
tion of the new metal loading
arms, but the installation of a
clean manifold to handle avia-
tion gasoline, motor gasoline,
jet fuel and kerosene, a dirty
manifold to handle deballast-
ing, crude, diesel/gasoil and
fuel products and a _ small
manifold for handling naphth-
enic acid, strong caustic and
anti-icing additive. Also mo-
dern quick release mooring
hooks have been installled for
quicker berthing and unberth-
ing.

One big improvement over
the old loading system is that
four of the new metal loading
arms on each berth can be
used for both clean and dirty
service.

One special feature on the
new manifold includes a
sample connection on each
loading arm which permits
sampling between the shore
manifold and the _ tanker
flange. This will help deter-
mine more positively whether
"shore” or "ship” has caused
a contamination problem.

Work on No. 2 Finger Pier
was completed August 26. It
was the first pier to be mod-
ernized in six weeks time un-
der Lago’s Pier Modernization
Project.

Esso Helps Protect Dutch Past
By Restoring Famous Windmills

The terrific pace of modern
living allows little time for
reminiscing. Most people are
so busy with present-day pro-
blems and those they antici-
pate that they tend to neglect
the past.

Buildings fall in this area of
neglect. Many historical points
of interest are taken for
granted. So that future gen-
erations can fully enjoy and
appreciate them, they should
be restored before they are
beyond repair.

Esso has thus come to the
aid of Holland’s most famous
landmarks — the fast disap-
pearing windmills. It has un-
dertaken a six-year program
to restore six windmills in the
area of Slochteren, the site of
the large natural gas find.

Once there were 80 of them
in the area, but only six are
left. Of these only one is be-

Employees To Receive Six Months
Free Insurance Under Group Plan

A six-month premium wai-
ver for participants in the
Group Life Insurance Pro-
gram was recently announced.
This waiver became effective
September 1, 1968.

About 74% of the Staff and
Regular employees group par-
ticipating will enjoy free in-
surance coverage during the
period September, 1968
through February, 1969.

This is the eighth consecu-
tive year that Lago partici-
pants in the Group Life In-
surance Program are granted
a free insurance period. Pre-
mium waivers in the past
have been for periods of two

to six months. This is the
third consecutive year, how-
ever, that participants have

enjoyed a six-month premium
holiday.

Lago has been offering Life
Insurance to Staff and Reg-
ular Employees since Febru-
ary 1956. Under the plan, the
employee pays only 50 cents
per month for each thousand
guilders of insurance. The
cost is deducted from employ-
ee’s pay.

Employees may get insur-
ance protection amounting to
approximately one year’s nor-
mal earnings, but not exceed-
ing Fis. 20,000.

Applications for Group Life
Insurance should be made

Protect Your Child
From Traffic Accidents...

Thousands of children each year are vaccinated against var-
ious infectious diseases. They receive polio shots, tetanus shots,
and to enter school, the required small pox vaccination. This
sanitary campaign undoubtedly is important to protect the
health and life of your child.

Unfortunately there is no vaccination and there never will be
one to protect your child from one of the major dangers of
modern times: traffic accidents.

Nowadays, children are taught traffic safety at school. This
training, no doubt, has helped your children understand traffic
safety better and has taught them to obey traffic rules. They
have become more confident in the street and can take some
necessary precautions.

But, how then do you protect the child that goes to school for
the first time? The following steps may help make your child
more secure on his way to school:

* Show him the safest and shortest way to get there, teaching
him to look left and right before crossing. Insist that he use the
route you have indicated.

* Get him ready for school in time so he doesn’t have to rush
to get there.

* Teach him to be patient. Stress upon him the importance
of waiting.

* Set a good example and don’t take risks. Your child will
imitate most things you do.

Help your little one to become safety conscious and you won't
have cause to worry.

Seven Technical Students Gain
On-The-Job Experience At Lago

Last month seven technical
students began a six-month in-
plant training assignment at
Lago under the company’s
Cooperative Education Pro-
gram.

The purpose of this program
is to provide professional or
technical students with prac-
tical work experience requir-
ed as an integral part of their
school curriculum.

To participate in this pro-
gram, the students and their
parents should be residents of
the Netherlands Antilles.
Furthermore, the students
must be currently enrolled in
a recognized professional or
technical school (HTS or
UTS) and be recommended by
the school for such training.

Since the program began in
1962, Lago has helped 68
students gain experience in
their practical year.

This year’s participants are:
John A. Williams, who is
studying chemical technology
at the HTS in Heerlen, Hol-
land. He has been assigned to
the Technical-Process Engin-
eering Division and Laborato-
ries.

The others are students of
the UTS John F. Kennedy in
Oranjestad. They are: Saturno
Arends, Kenneth Cheung,
Alexander Mariana and Asing
Ng, who are studying mech-
anical engineering. Robert
van der Schoot and Alvin
Rombley are studying elec-
trical engineering.

These young men will be
working in various mechani-
cal Divisions on a rotational
basis to gain the necessary
work experience required by
their school.

The students’ performance
must meet an acceptable stan-
dard and will be appraised and
recorded. They are also re-
quired to prepare a weekly re-
port for their school.

While in training the com-
pany will provide them with a
grant-in-aid for every 4-week
period.

Students under the Coopera-
tive Education Program are
required to follow all comp-
any rules and regulations dur-
ing their Lago training as-
signment.

Driving Requires Extra Attention
Now That Kids Return To School

If you drive to work and
your route takes you by or
near a school, you have very
good reasons to be extra alert
this month.

Schoolchildren ! Recently
classes were resumed and
over 18,000 children are
swarming the streets in the
morning, during the lunch
hour and in the afternoon
when school is out. This is
the time when you have to be
very careful at school cross-
ings and school zones.

Although Traffic Safety
Training at school has given
the kids improved instruction
of the traffic rules, you can
never be too sure. When
children are at play they for-
get many things, including
their own safety. Suddenly,
and without warning, they

may run in front of your car
and you have to be able to
react quickly to avoid an ac-
cident.

A special reason this month
to be extra careful is because

little kids are going to school
for the first time. Especially
if they’re not accompanied by
an older child, drivers should
expect almost anything from
them. They may be excited,
nervous or bewildered by this
new experience and you are
the one who has to watch out
for them,

Another hazard is the child
sporting his new bike. He
might do some unpredictable
things like veering into your
path or pulling some crazy
stunts to attract his. friends’
attention.

Be prepared for kids step-
ping out of school buses or
darting from between parked
cars.

To be on the safe side, drive
slowly near the school zone
and be prepared to give the
children a brake’.

Keep your eyes open and
expect the unexpected this
month.

Help them live!

Finger-Tip Control Is Introduced
For New Loading Arms at No. 2 Pier

On-the-job _ training has
started recently on the mod-
ernized No. 2 Finger Pier to

* teach some 65 Oil Movements

di
ri

employees how to handle the
new all metal loading arms.

By using a control box,
dock crewmen by finger-tip
control can now connect or
disconnect the new metal
loading arms to the tanker
manifolds. The ten loading
arms (five on each side of
the pier and each complete
arm weighing about 20 tons)
can be controlled electrically
either from the tanker deck
or from a platform on the
pier. The remote control ope-
rates the arms and a hydrau-
lic quick coupling device at
the end of the loading arms.

Coordinator during one
month for the training of the
Oil Movements personnel is
Julian Daniel, a shift foreman
in Oil Movements. He has been
trained by Arthur Aldcroft,
representative of the manu-
facturer of the metal loading
arms.

The training will acquaint
the men with the new loading
system, manifolds, line wash-
ing procedures, line sampling
and the new name system for
lines and manifolds.

The new metal loading
arms will save time and im-
prove tanker turnaround as
they permit quicker hookups
to ship manifolds and higher

loading rates than was pos-
sible with the flexible rubber
hoses.

The pier modernization in-
cluded not only the installa-
tion of the new metal loading
arms, but the installation of a
clean manifold to handle avia-
tion gasoline, motor gasoline,
jet fuel and kerosene, a dirty
manifold to handle deballast-
ing, crude, diesel/gasoil and
fuel products and a _ small
manifold for handling naphth-
enic acid, strong caustic and
anti-icing additive. Also mo-
dern quick release mooring
hooks have been installled for
quicker berthing and unberth-
ing.

One big improvement over
the old loading system is that
four of the new metal loading
arms on each berth can be
used for both clean and dirty
service.

One special feature on the
new manifold includes a
sample connection on each
loading arm which permits
sampling between the shore
manifold and the _ tanker
flange. This will help deter-
mine more positively whether
"shore” or "ship” has caused
a contamination problem.

Work on No. 2 Finger Pier
was completed August 26. It
was the first pier to be mod-
ernized in six weeks time un-
der Lago’s Pier Modernization
Project.

Esso Helps Protect Dutch Past
By Restoring Famous Windmills

The terrific pace of modern
living allows little time for
reminiscing. Most people are
so busy with present-day pro-
blems and those they antici-
pate that they tend to neglect
the past.

Buildings fall in this area of
neglect. Many historical points
of interest are taken for
granted. So that future gen-
erations can fully enjoy and
appreciate them, they should
be restored before they are
beyond repair.

Esso has thus come to the
aid of Holland’s most famous
landmarks — the fast disap-
pearing windmills. It has un-
dertaken a six-year program
to restore six windmills in the
area of Slochteren, the site of
the large natural gas find.

Once there were 80 of them
in the area, but only six are
left. Of these only one is be-

are corn and water mills re-
quiring major restoration.

Owners of the windmills
look at the relics as white

invest money in them. Modern

work faster and better.

Restoration is being under-
taken by the local municipal
council.

Employees To Receive Six Months
Free Insurance Under Group Plan

A six-month premium wai-
ver for participants in the
Group Life Insurance Pro-
gram was recently announced.
This waiver became effective
September 1, 1968.

About 74% of the Staff and
Regular employees group par-
ticipating will enjoy free in-
surance coverage during the
period September, 1968
through February, 1969.

This is the eighth consecu-
tive year that Lago partici-
pants in the Group Life In-
surance Program are granted
a free insurance period. Pre-
mium waivers in the past
have been for periods of two

to six months. This is the
third consecutive year, how-
ever, that participants have

enjoyed a six-month premium
holiday.

Lago has been offering Life
Insurance to Staff and Reg-
ular Employees since Febru-
ary 1956. Under the plan, the
employee pays only 50 cents
per month for each thousand
guilders of insurance. The
cost is deducted from employ-
ee’s pay.

Employees may get insur-
ance protection amounting to
approximately one year’s nor-
mal earnings, but not exceed-
ing Fis. 20,000.

Applications for Group Life
Insurance should be made
through the Public & Indus-
