Secawsens 0Gatttnj 1967 Lago Oil & Transport Co., Ltd. i 2 ARUBA ESSO NEWS December 20, 1967 President's Message At this time, I wish to extend a warm season's greeting to all Lago employees and their families, annuit- ants and friends. The nativity is an event that changed the world. It represents change through enlightened relationships among men of good will. In past months, you have successfully faced chal- lenges which have changed our business for the bet- ter. This too was made possible because of enlighten- ed relationships among men of good will. One example was the successful negotiation of a new collective working agreement. Today, Lago em- ployees have earned the most favorable working conditions in the Netherlands Antilles. The success of both our company and our com- munity depends on the continued personal growth of its people. As our horizons expand we must focus on those tools which help people make greater con- tributions not only on the job but in such areas as education, civic leadership and community service. We should take equal pride in our expanded train- ing programs and being pioneers in videotape com- munications as we do in an oil movements or refining modernization project. Change is a partner in progress. But Lago em- ployees can take an extra measure of pride. You have developed these changes through enlightened relationships among men of good will. On behalf of my associates and myself, I wish each of you a Bon Pascu and Feliz Anja Nobo. W. A. Murray Our Cover The harbor is a vital part of Lago operations. Ships and crewmen from all parts of the world call here to load or unload petroleum cargoes. They represent the all im- portant link with our worldwide markets. On November 17, 1967 the San Nicolas Harbor commemorated its 40th anniversary as an oil port contributing to Lago's and Aruba's progress. Our Christmas cover is dedicated to all who had a share in this achievement. Our Back Page The Santa Claus scene is the creation of Miss Mar- guerite Brouwer of PR/IR. The poem was composed especially for the Aruba Esso News by Mrs. Bep Meijer of Comptroller's. Under the old piping arrangement, the engines of the tugs used to run very hot caus- ing frequent cracking of the cylinder heads. This was due to the fact that there were times when two equal flows of water were running in opposite direc- heads and chartering of the Government's tugboat. Francisco received an initial award of Fls. 40.- for his sug- gestion in May of this year when his idea was originally adopted. For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. Matthew 2 : 1-2 The coming of Jesus marked the beginning of Christianmty. Since His birth His teachings have spread around the world, and millions have found happinessby learning His lessons and living in the way He directed. We know only one story of the birth of Jesus, the one told in the Bible. If others were written, they do not exist today. For 1,000 years and more, historians, scholars, priests and astronomers have tried to find out more about His birth the first Christmas an event so important that it changed the history of the world. The star that the Wise Men followed to Bethlehem the star "in the east" has been a clue for astronomers, and they have tried to pinpoint its ap- pearance. In doing so, they have put together evidence that Christ's birth took place several years before the year we now call Anno Domini I the first year of our Lord. Astronomers know that the Star of Bethlehem is no longer in the sky; yet 2,000 years ago men gazed at the same stars we see today. The theory has been advanced that the "star" may not have been a star at all. Several possibilities have been suggested to explain the light in the sky that guided the Magi. Could it have been a me- teor, or a comet, or a new star coming to birth at about the same time as Jesus? I seems unlikely that the star of Bethlehem was a meteor. These streaks of light that are also called shooting stars are made when small bits of ma- terial, sometimes as light and feathery as ashes, enter our at- mosphere and become heated. But they last only for seconds; and the Christmas star would have had to remain in the sky for weeks and perhaps months, all through the time it took the Wise Men to make their long journey to Bethlehem. It is unlikely, too, that the star was a comet. Comets are wispy, cloudlike formations of gases and cosmic dust that re- flect sunlight. They are mem- bers of the solar system and, like planets, are held in regular orbits by the attraction of the sun. Frequently they are large and bright enough td be seen clear- ly without a telescope, and they may remain visible for several days, weeks, sometimes months. But since the paths of comets can be figured as accurately as those of planets, astronomers know which ones were close enough to the earth to be seen thousands of years ago. There was no bright comet visible around the time of Jesus' birth. In any case, comets were believ- ed to be the finger of a god pointing toward the earth, warn- ing of danger and calamity. They were associated with fam- ines and floods, earthquakes and disasters never with happy events. In 1604 the German astron- omer Johannes Kepler suggest- ed a third possibility. He saw a star one night where there had been no star before. It grew brighter and brighter until fin- ally it could be seen in the day- light. Then it faded and rapidly disappeared. Such a star is cal- led a nova, from the Latin word for "New," and Kepler thought that the Star of Bethlehem might have been a nova. But modern astronomers can trace the appearance of new stars down through history, and there was no nova in the sky any- where near the time we believe Jesus was born. But there are many persons who believe that the Star of Bethlehem was neither a group of planets nor an exploding star nor an especially brilliant me- teor or comet. To them the star was like nothing men had ever seen before. They believe it was a miracle. Cietu Tempo anto cu Hesus a nace na Bethlehem di Hudev, den tempo di rey Herodes, a bmni Sabirnan for di Oriente na He. rusalem i nan a puntra: Ta na unda e rey di Hudiunan ta, cu a caba di nace? Si tabatin otro scirbi anto awendia nan no ta existi mas. Pa 1000 anja of mas, hzstoreconan, sco. lasticonan, sacerdotenan y as- tr6nomonan a trata di haja sa mas di Su nacemento e pro- mer Pascu un event asina important cu el a cambia his- toria di mundo. Haciendo e trabao ey, nan a acumula prueba cu nacemento di Cristu a tuma lugar varies anja pro- mer cu e anja cu nos ta jama Anno Dominm I e promer an- ja di nos Senjor. Astr6nomonan sabi cu e Strea di Bethlehem no ta den cielu mas. Nan a sugen varies posi- bilidad pa splca e luz cu a guia e Sabirnan riba nan ca- minda Por tabata un meteor, of un cometa, of un strea cu a nace mas of menos mes tempu cu Hesus? December 20, 1967 December 20, 1967 Lago Oil & Transport Co Ltd. E. Villanueva -Editor; A. Werleman Assoc. I \Dl.I R 11li r.T I} m R,,d R lll, Christmas is a festival of the heart a holiday of much joy- ous appeal, and music is a sig- nificant part of Christmas around the world. But have you ever wondered about the origin of Christmas music? Carols were a very different kind of music from the formal hymns used in early church ser- vices. They came from secular and pagan sources. The non- Christian Greeks and Romans used them in their plays, village festivals, weddings and birth- day celebrations. The word "carole" originally meant a circle dance. Then words were added to the music, merely as an accompaniment to the dance movements. These simple folk songs came from the hearts of country people. Carols further developed through their connections with the mystery plays of the Mid- dle Ages. Our strolling Christmas car- olers are part of a long tradi- tion which also began in the Middle Ages. Strolling beggars sang songs and were rewarded with free food and drink. Re- cently, caroling has become a way of extending charity rather than of asking it. Today carols are usually des- cribed as "hymns of joy" which are sung at Christmastime. There has recently been an up- surge of interest in the rich her- itage of Christmas carols from other countries. Carol collections add to the joy and brightness of Christmas a happy season of the year for Christians. "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" Originally, this English carol ,t llh-l I h-m HW. AS I d - 6 7 . a o ... - p ," h k . S \ * a was a simple hymn to the king written by Rev. Charles Wes- ley. George Whitfield changed it to a carol of the Nativity with several short four-line stanzas. Then, more than 100 years later, an organist named Wil- liam Cummings rearranged the words into ten-line stanzas and set them to a composition by Kd Felix Mendelssohn. (Mendels- sohn's original music was com- posed to celebrate the invention of printing!). "0 Little Town of Bethlehem" Another American carol of the Nativity, "0 Little Town of Bethlehem," has a beautiful his- tory. In 1865, Bishop Phillips Brooks visited the Holy Land, riding on horseback from Jeru- ( salem to Bethlehem. His first glimpse of Bethlehem was as it slept peacefully on Christmas Eve. Three years later, back in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he remembered the setting and wrote the words of this carol for the children of his congre- gation. He then asked his or- ganist, Lewis H. Redner, to compose a melody. For over a week, Redner could not hit up the right music to suit the words. Then supposedly while sleeping on Christmas Eve, Rednes heard this tune which he S called "a gift from heaven" - S and thus completed the carol. The Legend Around "Poinsettia" Flower Among the flowers symbolic of the Christmas season is the S poinsettia, which has a legen- dary origin. It was the custom in a cer- tain town in Mexico to take gifts to the church on Christ- mas Eve and offer them to the Christ Child. On this particular night there S was a little boy standing out- side the church door. He want- ed desperately to go and join S the members of the congrega- tion who were laying their gifts on the altar, but he was poor and he had nothing to give. But I can at least pray, he thought to himself. And so he knelt down outside the window! where he could hear the music coming from the church organ. When he rose again to his feet, to his great amazement he saw in the spot where he had knelt a beautiful plant with scarlet leaves and a yellow flower in their center. He had never seen anything like it in his life, and realizing this was a divine mir- acle he gently plucked the stalk and took it into the church to lay on the altar. "0 Ciudad Chiquito di Bethlehem" Un otro cantica Mericano di Pascu, cu jama "O Ciudad Chi- quito di Bethlehem" tin un his- toria masha bunita. Na 1865 Obispo Phillips Brooks a bis- hita Tera Santu, riba cabal for di Jerusalem te Bethlehem. Comparing this year's period with 1966, there is a slight de- crease in the total number of accidents (November, 1966: 166; November, 1967: 152). Total injuries at the end of November, 1966 were 107, com- pared with 108 injuries up to the end of November this year. Our accident frequency rate for November, 1967 was- 1.99 while the rate for 1966 was .81. Our present safety perform- ance indicates that this year will perhaps not be as good as last year.
