Lago Sponsors Chemistry Course

For Group of Island Schoolteachers


Learning is a continuous
process not only for trade and
industry personnel, but for
educators as well. With the
advance of science and tech-
nology, students must be bet-
ter prepared to follow advanc-
ed studies in various fields.
In Aruba, MULO and UTS
graduates wishing to follow
an engineering curriculum at
U.S. colleges generally find
they need a higher level of
chemistry training than is
available at these schools.
Without this special chemis-
try knowledge, they may have
to follow a one-year prep
training before entering col-
lege.
To give teachers of MULO
and UTS schools a better
knowledge of chemistry a stu-


dent needs for college en-
trance, Lago has sponsored a
special chemistry course for
the teachers involved.
A group of eleven island
teachers have recently com-
pleted a 9-month chemistry
course under direction of Hud-
man A. Hoo, a chemist in La-
go's Laboratories. In less than
a year's time, these teachers
covered a rigorous theoretical
and practical chemistry pro-
gram that would otherwise
take three years to complete
in a regular HBS program.
Every Monday night they had
followed three-hour classes at
the Colegio Arubano.
The presentation of certifi-
cates for completing the che-
mistry course was made by
PR/IR Manager B. E. Nixon


during a luncheon at the Olde
Molen on April 27, 1967.
The teachers who completed
the chemistry course and their
schools are: P. F. Hoogestee-
ger, of Abraham de Veer
School who also teaches part-
time at Colegio Arubano; J.
W. Klein of John Wesley Col-
lege; P. G. J. van Grinsven,.
A. Rosenstand, and G. Ter
Hennepe of Kennedy School;
Sister Cecilia and Th. M. Vaee-
sen of St. Antonius College;
H. van Ree and Mrs. G. van
Ree of Juliana School; Frere
Huysmans, of La Salle College,
and S. Punt of Abraham de
Veer School.

For the 13th consecutive
year, Lago will offer on-the-
job summer training to college
students. The program runs
from June 19 to August 11,
1967.
Applications must be turn-
ed in before May 26. Applica-
tion forms are now available
at the Training Division.
The program is open to
children of Aruba residents
who are enrolled at an accre-
dited college. They must have
successfully completed at least
one year of college.
Applications will be handled
on a first-come, first-served
basis depending on available
job training openings.
Because of the limited op-
portunities, enrollment prefer-
ence will be given to Aruban
students to the extent pos-
sible.
A student grant-in-aid of
Fls. 225 per four-week period
will be provided.
The program's objective is
to provide actual job exper-
ience in the student's major
area.

30-Year Employees, Watch Recipients

Honored In President Murray's Office


Four 30-year employees,
three from Process, one from
Mechanical, and five 25-year
service watch recipients rec-
eived congratulations from
President W. A. Murray dur-
ing April. Accompanied by
their department supervisors,
the men were presented with
their 30-year emblems and
service watches by President
Murray.
The 30-year men were Jose
I. Schwengle, Process-Oil Mo-
vements; Luis Werleman and
Geronimo Winterdaal, both of
Process-Refining; and Hose E.
Figaroa, of Mechanical-Pipe.
Mr. Schwengle spent all of
this thirty years in Marine,
where he worked in lake tan-
ker operations in the 1950s.
He became a ship dispatcher
in 1953 and a signal tower
operator in 1960. He is now
shift Supervisor-Agency Oper-
ations in Process-Oil Movts.
Mr. Werleman is now an
operator in Refining-Stills &
Cracking where he spent all of


his 30 years. Having started
as a Process Helper D, he pro-
gressed to levelman in 1938
and to asst. operator in 1946.
Mr. Winterdaal first start-
ed in 1935 in Instrument. Af-
ter a break in service, he was
re-employed in 1937 in Boiler
& Tin. He transferred to Pro-
cess-Hydro Poly Plant in 1939.
He moved to Catalytic & Light
Ends in 1943, where he pro-
gressed to assistant operator,
his present position, in 1959.
Mr. Figaroa started at La-
go in the former Labor Dept.
in 1937. That same year he
transferred to Pipe, where he
is now a Pipefitter A.
Those who received the La-
go 25-year service watches
from President Murray were:

27th LSP Queen's Birthday Olympiad

Draws Many Contestants in 17 Events

Witnessed by a huge crowd, the 27th Lago Sport Park
Queen's Birthday Olympiad was held Friday, April 28th. Among
the many contestants, the largest group of participants this
year was again from the Netherlands Marines. The title of Out-
standing Athlete went to Marine 1st Class P. G. C. Klasesens.

The presentation of award to- the outstanding athlete was
made by President W. A. Murray. Among other guests who
presented awards to the winners were Mrs. Murray, Mr. and
Mrs. B. E. Nixon, Miss L. Murray, Lago Vice President H. L.
Siegele and Marine Captain J. B. G. Clocquet.

Gordon Owen Visits Lago While On Way

To Assume Assignment In Cartagena


A visitor to Lago recently
was former Safety Division
Head Gordon N. Owen, who
left Lago in October, 1961. He
is n an assignment from Es-
so Inter-America, Coral Gab-
les, that will take him to Car-
tagena. In Colombia, he will
review the safety programs of


the Esso refinery and chem-
ical plant there.
Before assuming his assign-
ment in Cartagena, he visited
Lago for two days to review
our current safety methods
and procedures. He met with
Process, Mechanical, Indus-
trial and Public Relations
groups.
