Meeting the Challenges of Progress

Any progressive and expanding community like Aruba has a
growing need for people who are interested in the challenges of
the technical fields.

Today, scientific advance and technology are moving ahead at
a rapid rate. And every community needs people who can handle
the new tools of progress. People who can build the paths, so
that the rest of us may continue to move ahead and stay in step
with progress.

But a person is not born with an interest in science — or with
any other particular interests. How is it, then, that at some point
a young person is able to choose a career?

If I were to pick two characteristics which are typical of all
children, I would say curiosity
and imagination. As the young
child develops, his curiosity and
his imagination are directed
toward particular activities, call
these his experiences. And bas-
ed on his most satisfying and
rewarding experiences, at some

point he selects his life’s work. |

In other words, as children,
we develop skills and do best in
those things we enjoy doing.
And later on, we enjoy doing
those things that we do best.

Recently we announced a La-
go Science Fair. This is a pro-
ject designed to arouse the cu-
riosity and to stir the creative
imagination of our island’s
young people. At the same time,

we expect it will provide a number of satisfying and rewarding
experiences in the area of scientific activity. Hopefully, a greater
number of our young people may discover the challenges and re-
wards of science and perhaps feel a greater urge to pursue scien-
tific careers. : ;

We are enthusiastic about the idea of holding a science fair.
We feel the potential community benefits are considerable and
we are proud to be making another investment in our com-
munity’s Progress through Learning.

Enfrentando Desafio di Progreso

Cualkier comunidad progresivo y creciendo, manera Aruba ta,

Awendia progreso cientifico y tecnologia ta bayendo dilanti
cu gran velocidad. Y tur comunidad di hende mester di persona-

Segun e
mucha jong ta birando grandi, su curiosidad y su imaginacion
ta worde dirigi riba cierto actividadnan particular, laga nos
jama nan su experiencianan. Y basando su mes riba e experien-
cianan cu tabata mas satisfactorio y cu a duné mas recompensa,

Obhe-

Crane Operator Werleman
Receives 30-Year Emblem
From President Murray

Receiving his 30-year service
award this month was Luis Wer-
leman of Mechanical-Transpor-
tation. In a brief session in the
president’s office, Mr. Werle-
man was presented his 30-year
service emblem by Mr- Murray.

Mr. Werleman joined Lago in
January, 1937 as a Laborer
”C” in the Labor Department.
A year later he was promoted
to Labor Helper ”B”. In that
position he was transferred to
‘the Mechanical Garage in 1946,
‘where he advanced to Corporal
”"C” a year later. Successive
promotions through the various
Crane Operator's categories
|brought him the title of Crane
Operator I in 1955. He was
transferred to Mechanical -
Transportation in 1960.

During his 30 years at Lago,
Mr. Werleman had no break in
service. Born in 1916, he is mar-
ried and is the father of six:
daughters and five sons.

portunity to display science pro-)
jects they have made. By pre-
paring his project for the
science fair from the beginning
to end, the student is able to
exercise his in-born curiosity
and imagination. While he gets
the satisfaction of personal ac-
complishment, he at the same
time gains experience in using
scientific methods.

These exhibitions are quite |
popular in the United States!
and Europe. Industry, commer-
ce and civic organizations re-
gularly sponsor these science
fairs, which are aimed at sti-
mulating the students to pur-|
sue scientific studies. In Aruba
we have two university gradu-
ates, who have successfully par-
ticipated in science fairs abroad |
and have won prizes. They are’
Alex Hoo and Robert Hernan-|
dez, who both studied with a
Lago scholarship and who are
now engineers working for the
company.

Was It Sunspot Activity That Caused
Heavy Rainfalls In Last Few Months?

During the last three months of 1966, Aruba had abundant showers
accounting for 15.38 inches of rainfall and bringing the year’s total to a
peak of 24.50 inches in the last five years. This was about twice as much
as in 1965.

ESSO NEWS

Except for the months of February (2.20 inches) and June (3.31
inches), the first nine months were relatively dry, with total rainfall of
9.12 inches.

Last year’s rainfall figure contains one definite indication, however.
In August last year Max Sand, formerly of Mechanical-M&C, and Ed
O’Brien (on loan to Esso Pappas, Greece) made some predictions about
heavy rainfalls during the next months.

They based their prediction on their study of the correlation of sunspot

January 27, 1967

activity and rainfall during the past 35 years. On a chart they plotted
the cycle of heavy sunspot activity occurring about every 11 years, along
with the rainfall statistics for the 35-year period.

They discovered that the third year before and the third year after sun-
spot peaks usually were years with relatively heavy rainfall (1933, 1938,
1944, 1950, 1955 and 1961, as shown on chart above).

They also knew that 1966 would be the third year before the next peak
of sunspot activity (see chart). Although only 7.57 inches of rain had fal-
len from January to July last
year, the heavy rainfalls in later
months brought a high record
(24.50 inches, see chart for
1966) for the past five years.

Average rainfall in Aruba is)
18.89 inches. It has again been
noted last year that March was)
the driest month (0.002 in-|
ches), whereas the wettest}
months were February, June,
October, November and Decem-

Meeting the Challenges of Progress

Any progressive and expanding community like Aruba has a
growing need for people who are interested in the challenges of
the technical fields.

Today, scientific advance and technology are moving ahead at
a rapid rate. And every community needs people who can handle
the new tools of progress. People who can build the paths, so
that the rest of us may continue to move ahead and stay in step
with progress.

But a person is not born with an interest in science — or with
any other particular interests. How is it, then, that at some point
a young person is able to choose a career?

If I were to pick two characteristics which are typical of all
children, I would say curiosity
and imagination. As the young
child develops, his curiosity and
his imagination are directed
toward particular activities, call
these his experiences. And bas-
ed on his most satisfying and
rewarding experiences, at some

point he selects his life’s work. |

In other words, as children,
we develop skills and do best in
those things we enjoy doing.
And later on, we enjoy doing
those things that we do best.

Recently we announced a La-
go Science Fair. This is a pro-
ject designed to arouse the cu-
riosity and to stir the creative
imagination of our island’s
young people. At the same time,

we expect it will provide a number of satisfying and rewarding
experiences in the area of scientific activity. Hopefully, a greater
number of our young people may discover the challenges and re-
wards of science and perhaps feel a greater urge to pursue scien-
tific careers. : ;

We are enthusiastic about the idea of holding a science fair.
We feel the potential community benefits are considerable and
we are proud to be making another investment in our com-
munity’s Progress through Learning.

Enfrentando Desafio di Progreso

Cualkier comunidad progresivo y creciendo, manera Aruba ta,

Awendia progreso cientifico y tecnologia ta bayendo dilanti
cu gran velocidad. Y tur comunidad di hende mester di persona-

Segun e
mucha jong ta birando grandi, su curiosidad y su imaginacion
ta worde dirigi riba cierto actividadnan particular, laga nos
jama nan su experiencianan. Y basando su mes riba e experien-
cianan cu tabata mas satisfactorio y cu a duné mas recompensa,

Obhe-

Crane Operator Werleman
Receives 30-Year Emblem
From President Murray

Receiving his 30-year service
award this month was Luis Wer-

service emblem by Mr- Murray.

Mr. Werleman joined Lago in

A year later he was promoted
to Labor Helper ”B”. In that
position he was transferred to

promotions through the various

Operator I in 1955. He was
transferred to Mechanical -
Transportation in 1960.

During his 30 years at Lago,
Mr. Werleman had no break in
service. Born in 1916, he is mar-

jects they have made. By pre-
paring his project for the
science fair from the beginning
to end, the student is able to
exercise his in-born curiosity
and imagination. While he gets
the satisfaction of personal ac-
complishment, he at the same
time gains experience in using
scientific methods.

These exhibitions are quite |
popular in the United States!

gularly sponsor these science

They based their prediction on their study of the correlation of sunspot

activity and rainfall during the past 35 years.

It has again been
noted last year that March was)
the driest month (0.002 in-|
ches), whereas the wettest}
months were February, June,
October, November and Decem-
